THE WALKING DEAD's Alternate Ending Has Been Revealed - Along With A First Look Photo!

The Walking Dead's alternate ending has been revealed following last Sunday's epic series finale, and it was set to take us into the future for a touching throwback to the show's very first episode...

The Walking Dead concluded with last Sunday's season 11 finale, though the franchise will live on across multiple spin-offs. Rick and Michonne, Negan and Maggie, and Daryl will all take centre stage in those, so there are only really a handful of characters we've said goodbye to.

However, had Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira not returned for their cameo roles, the team working on the series had a very different ending in mind.

Talking to Insider (via FearHQ.com), director and executive producer Greg Nicotero revealed "There was a scene that we had shot, but when it was decided to put the coda in we felt like it would conflict with the Rick and Michonne bit. So we took it out."

While he didn't elaborate on what it entailed, the site has a description of the sequence from an unnamed source. Here's how the scene would have played out:

"After Daryl rode off, we cut forward to the Freedom Parkway, outside Atlanta - where the iconic shot of Rick rode down from the pilot. See an ethanol-modified van, with a young woman and man in the front seats (in their twenties). And through the scene, we come to realize it's adult RJ and Judith. Other adult versions of the kids are in the back - Coco, Gracie, etc.

They're out there, looking to escort any survivors back to their communities. Continuing the legacy of their parents. As RJ speaks over the radio, he finishes with: "If you can hear me, answer back. This is Rick Grimes." (Which, of course, is his name — and the line Rick said in the pilot.) Then we end with the voice of a survivor answering back: '...Hello?'"

While not a world-building ending, this could have still served as a fitting conclusion to The Walking Dead. Of course, we can't help but think this was a sequel set-up in and of itself; still, revealing what became of Rick and Michonne's children may have effectively spoiled what happens in their spin-off project.

Confirming this description is legitimate is a photo shared by cinematographer Duane Charles Manwiller showing the adult versions of those fan-favourite characters.

Do you think this sounds like a more fitting ending for The Walking Dead

Definitely see why they didn't go with this. Kind of directly goes against what they're setting up with the Rick/Michonne spin off. Much prefer the ending with young Judith and AJ. At least that's more about actual progress rather than repetition.

And at least this way there's a chance for Rick to get a happy ending back with his kids. Not having him out of their future completely.

So then what was the ending? Did they just sneak all the important characters off the show for spin offs then just have zombies eat the remaining cast of who the [frick] ever?

This show has been the Limping Dead for the last 3 or 4 years. Too much filler materials from writers that thought they knew better than the source material.

TWD is one of my favorite comic series. I watched the show until the end but it should've ended when Carl died or when Rick left. There was some good episodes in the final seasons but they were far and few between.

Still wish it just would've ended with Rick waking up in the hospital from his coma

This was always my fantasy ending for the series:

With sunset approaching, camera crawls up from behind the silhouette of a main character (pick one) standing on a hilltop overlooking a vast expanse of land, in the distance, packs of living-dead slowly shamble back and forth while moaning. Tight closeup of the character's face as he or she says to themselves: "I hate f**king zombies". Cut to black. The end.

The one and only time the word "zombies" would be heard for the entire series. 😁

Walking Dead started going to hell as soon as Scott Gimple took control. But the two fatal mistakes Gimple made were both caused because of the dumb idea that Negan was more popular than he really was. They saw fans online praying for Negan and thought millions of viewers were in love with Negan also. First, they followed the funny book and killed Glenn and Abe and did it in such a way that it devalued everything that came before. Then Gimple decided he had to keep Negan as a regular and reform him so he concluded Carl needed to be sacrificed to make it work.

But no matter how much damage Gimple does, AMC keeps rewarding him for it.
