Courtesy of executive producer Marc Guggenheim, we have some interesting tidbits on the return of The Huntress aka Helena Bertinelli, who is played by the lovely Jessica De Gouw on The CW's Arrow. Here's what Guggenheim told Collider:

"It’s been literally a year, in story time, since we’ve seen her. One of the things we told Jessica De Gouw, who plays The Huntress, was that we weren’t interested in treading over old territory with Helena. What we pitched her was the idea that basically Helena Bertinelli is gone. The only thing that remains is The Huntress. It’s been a year of her literally scouring the world to find her father, who was on the run at the end of Episode 17 of last season. We really wanted to show that wear and tear on her. We even aged up her costume a little bit, so you really get the sense that she has been traveling the world and literally has just spent a year killing people to try to get at her dad, and it’s done quite a number on her soul. We get to explore all that, in a really fun episode that also deals with Laurel Lance, in a very big way. One of the things we wanted to do with the episode was give Laurel her groove back, as it were. We have obviously taken Laurel down a very dark path, this year. As we started to see at the end of last week’s episode, she’s going to start turning the corner. And this episode with The Huntress is a very big move in that direction."

Interesting. One, we get to learn just how much time has passed between Helena's departure in season one and her upcoming return. This means that quite a bit has happened in Oliver Queen's (Stephen Amell) life in the last year. Also, the fact that Huntress has traveled across the world for a year opens the door to a myriad of possibilities. Has she traveled to Gotham? Has she encountered The Question (loved that dynamic from the animated Bruce Timm Justice League show) or any other superheroes? Hopefully, we'll see a hint of these elements when S02E17 "Birds of Prey" airs on The CW in three weeks. But first, we have to see what the fallout will be from next new episode, "Suicide Squad". Based on Huntress' actions, it's not entirely out of the question that Bertinelli may find herself among its ranks some day.

"After a violent shipwreck, billionaire playboy Oliver Queen was missing and presumed dead for five years before being discovered alive on a remote island in the Pacific. When he returns home to Starling City, his devoted mother Moira, much-beloved sister Thea, and best friend Tommy welcome him home, but they sense Oliver has been changed by his ordeal on the island. While Oliver hides the truth about the man he’s become, he desperately wants to make amends for the actions he took as the boy he was. Most particularly, he seeks reconciliation with his former girlfriend, Laurel Lance. As Oliver reconnects with those closest to him, he secretly creates the persona of Arrow – a vigilante – to right the wrongs of his family, fight the ills of society, and restore Starling City to its former glory. By day, Oliver plays the role of a wealthy, carefree and careless philanderer he used to be – flanked by his devoted chauffeur/bodyguard, John Diggle – while carefully concealing the secret identity he turns to under cover of darkness. However, Laurel’s father, Detective Quentin Lance, is determined to arrest the vigilante operating in his city. Meanwhile, Oliver’s own mother, Moira, knows much more about the deadly shipwreck than she has let on – and is more ruthless than he could ever imagine."

Sarah is Black Canary. Laurel cannot take up the name. Black Canary & Green Arrow are the characters in love right? At least the two that end up with each other. Can you imaging Laurel wearing the suit & Oliver banging Laurel like he loves her. NOPE.

Didn't really like this take/incarnation of the Huntress. Hopefully that feeling changes because I would love it if she joined the Arrow Quiver/Cave and helps in the eventual showdown with R'as and the league of Assassins. The animated Huntress was awesome but something about this one just isn't very likable. Canary on the other hand....AWESOME

I re-watched season 1. The show writers never intended for Laurel to ever become Canary- its plain as day in re-watching the episodes. Laurel just isn't the bad ass crime fighter type and it would take a few seasons for her to be the believable heir to the Canary mask. She isn't liked. SHe is a drunken pill popping mess. She isn't very athletic. She needs LOTS of training to be as bad ass as Sarah. Its isn't happening and the seeds aren't even planted anywhere indicating that Laurel will become the Black Canary.

The girl as Canary is awful at acting and their Huntress seems like a generic Anne Hathaway Catwoman rip off. Don't get me wrong I am FINALLY starting to like the show (not as much as everyone else though) but this is how I honestly feel.

I think Jessica is fine in acting & looks..real fine!
The writing needs to be better for her as Huntress.
Seen her in other roles & she's good.

I don't like the way they treat Huntress. Her purpose on this show is literally just to kill her father. She's an antihero, yet they treat her like a psychotic little girl with daddy issues. The one thing I don't like from this show aside from them sidelining Diggle.

Other than that, damn-near perfect.

@TheBaroness...
Except for the fact that the producers have stated that Laurel will in fact become Black Canary & all that is going on with her right now is what is going to build her character into becoming the Dinah Lance Black Canary... That is what was stated. Now with the popularity of Caity Lotz as Black Canary, the question is will that change? The "No tights no flights" rule changed. So did the "No superpowers" rule for Arrow. For me personally, they've written Laurel's characted to be so unlikeable, it will not bother me if she does not become the 2nd Black Canary. If she does, i don't think she should be in a relationship with Ollie. Model her more after the New 52 BC, while Sara is the more pre-New 52 version

@ Jer3miah
I'm really hoping that the Birds of Prey episode at least ends with the Huntress making a 180 turn from the way in which she is currently & on a path to becoming more of a hero... Maybe close of the episode with her saying she's goin to settle down in Gotham City or somrthing like that

If Harley exists, which could be cool, then Batman would have to exist in Arrow continuity (which, if Nightwing is gonna appear, sounds reasonable). But if they try to do Harley without Joker existing that will be weird.

But my real beef is, if Laurel is going to eventually take over as Black Canary and her sister is going to die, wouldn't that have to be soon? It took Ollie 5 years of training to become GA, if we want to see Laurel as a realistic Canary by season 5 (which is where the series is planned to) then she needs to start training now. Maybe her sister's death is the death guggen is referring to. Hopefully anyways, because lovesick Laurel effing sucks.

My Lord...

if that's Harley for the show then I swear these writers MUST take over all of DC's television and cinematic universe because everyone else is doing it wrong.

And I actually enjoy DeGow as Huntress. He's a little crazy and works for the character. I just want them to write her with a little more humanity but all and all, I'm good.
