Superhero drama BLACK LIGHTNING, from uberproducer Greg Berlanti and wife/husband production duo Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil, is currently considered the 9th most likely pilot to be picked up to series according to 'The Hollywood Reporter (THR).' THR ranked pilots from across all networks. After Fox TV passed on the drama, Greg Berlanti brought the pilot to the CW, where his company has five other shows. THR sources say the show could be eyed for a midseason run.
The pilot stars Cress Williams as the title character Black Lightning/ Jefferson Pierce. In this version Pierce is a high school teacher and retired superhero raising two daughters. Black Lightning weilds his powers for justice once again as street gangs threaten his students. The cast also includes China Anne McClain and Nafessa Williams. In the 1970s, Black Lightning was the first DC Comics superhero of African descent to headline his own comicbook.
If the show is picked up for midseason or even late winter/spring 2018, this would give Berlanti Productions time to embed Jefferson Pierce/Black Lightning and his daughers in either the 'Flarrow-verse' or within the world of 'Supergirl.' Or they could bring th show in separate from the others and subsequently merge all the worlds together in an eventual TV version of 'Crisis on Infinte Earths.' This writer hopes to see Black Ligtning and his daughters embedded within the world of Supergirl. Supergirl is already a show whose characters share familial connections as Supergirl and her human sister Alex Danvers are lead characters and their parents Eliza and Jeremiah Danvers recurr.
