Danny Cannon On Creating The "Romantic, Gothic, Dickensian" World Of GOTHAM

The Judge Dredd director speaks to IGN about making Fox's Batman prequel series "his own" after following on from so many different incarnations of such a well known, and well loved, property. More past the jump..

IGN interviewed both the director of the Gotham pilot, Danny Cannon, and the show's producer and writer Bruno Heller. Over the course of their chat, the duo talk about what it was like coming up with a new take on such a popular, established bunch of characters, as well as the overall tone and look they were aiming for. Cannon admits that it was "daunting" to follow on from Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy, but that ultimately they decided to do their own thing and focus more on the changing face of the city itself instead of any specific comic storylines.

"It was daunting at first, because you're following three masterpieces. So I settled with the fact that -- what we talked about when we first pitched this was, "20 years before Batman." A world that's starting to see a corrupt city rotting from the inside. It reminded us of New York in the late '70s and early '80s. That was our first meeting, and we kind of spring-boarded off of that. Luckily, that's uncharted territory. Hopefully in the atmospherics of Gotham we created a romantic, gothic, Dickensian kind of world."

Cannon also suggests that although he's read the comic books, Gotham won't follow any specific arc from them. "I read everything, and you reach that point where you have to make it your own. DC were very supportive in that too, because they know when they've done things badly and when they've done things well. So far, what they've done well has just far outweighed, but you have to make these things your own." For more from Cannon and Heller too, click the link below.

@SuperCat
when has it been on this site where people can't judge an entire series or movie based on a few stills and a trailer?

@0megaDaGod
It won't beat out any of the long running Law & Orderesque shows, but I agree, done right this show will be amazing.

why is it a daunting task when it has nothing to do with Nolan's trilogy?

The only thing that really pisses me off and makes me doubtful about this is Jada Pinkett Smith's character, Fish Mooney. Why the hell would they make an original character the main villain? And all she is is a gang boss, so why couldn't they have just used one of the Falcone's or the Maroni's? That character could have easily been replaced by Sofia Falcone.

Anyways, I'm still hopeful.

A show about a young Bruce Wayne on his path to becoming Batman focusing on the people he meets and the training he recieves would be faaaaaar better. There's so much to do. You could show him training in stealth, learning escape tactics from Zatara and Zatanna, learning science, etc.

I'll check out the pilot, but I don't see myself tuning in every week to watch this show.

I just don't think Gotham has the longevity to last more than two seasons. It may not even last more than one season.

And does anybody else find the word "Dickensian" funny?

This show looks like it's gonna be WORSE than Smallville. Never thought I'd actually say that. In general people need to stop being so dam lazy. If you wanna make a Batman show.. MAKE A BATMAN SHOW! Don't sugar code it by saying the series is gonna be about a young boring ass character like Gordon. LMAO. Yeah, cause he's even as remotely interesting as Wayne/Batman. Yeah, no. For once I agree with ol' Grif
