Supergirl is back, and with only a handful of episodes remaining until the series comes to a close, The CW has released a brief extended season preview that showcases footage from this past Tuesday's midseason premiere, as Kara (Melissa Benoist) prepares to face her greatest challenge yet.
Barring any unforeseen developments, the show's series finale will air on November 9, possibly with a two-hour conclusion and plenty of special guest stars, as Melissa Benoist recently confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that original cast members Mehcad Brooks (Jimmy Olsen) and Jeremy Jordan (Winn Schott) will both be back along with fellow former series regular - and Benoist's real-life husband - Chris Wood (Mon-El).
"It would not have felt right if they hadn't come back. I loved seeing my friends. [Laughs] I loved seeing Mehcad Brooks. I loved seeing Jeremy. I loved having Chris back, obviously. I don't think it would've been a right goodbye if the people who came back hadn't come back, so I'm very grateful that they did. It's always difficult to get that many people back in the same place, especially in the pandemic, so I'm really glad it worked out that way."
As for why their characters reenter the story at this point, she adds, "Story-wise, it's really lovely the capacity in which all the characters return." Considering two of those guys live in the future, could this be our first indication that Kara's final season journey will ultimately result in her leaving for the 31st Century and potentially joining the Legion of Super-Heroes?
Not only would it line up with her character's comics history, but it would also help explain Kara's absence in other CW DC shows, including The Flash's upcoming "Armageddon" crossover event and future seasons of Superman & Lois. This would be a useful loophole in case Benoist isn't keen on reprising her fan-favorite role anytime soon, or if Warner Bros. prevents her from doing so due to their upcoming live-action movie.
While finale set photos have seemingly spoiled a major funeral scene, it's highly unlikely that the series will kill her character off. So if Kara doesn't head off into the future, another possibility is her moving to Argo City to be with her parents, which would take her off-planet and explain her whereabouts in the greater DC multiverse while also leaving the door open for a possible return down the line.
With filming officially wrapped, Benoist expressed how happy she was with how the show's closing hour turned out, describing it as, "extremely moving in how we wrapped Kara's arc. I found that really powerful."
The next episode will continue to see Kara get reacclimated into her daily routine, and will find her teaming up with Kelly (Azie Tesfai) to investigate possible abuse at a prison, which may go a lot deeper than they realize. Plus, this seems to be the start of Kelly's journey to taking on the Guardian mantle later this season. Elsewhere, Nia (Nicole Maines) gets an unexpected surprise when Nyxly (Peta Sergeant) crashes one of her dreams.
