THE SANDMAN Star Kirby Howell-Baptiste Promises More Death In Season 2; Has Delirium Been Cast?

Death fans will be pleased to hear that Kirby Howell-Baptiste's surprisingly chipper take on The Grim Reaper will have a larger presence in the second season of Netflix's The Sandman.

The actress, who only appeared in one episode of the first season, the superb "The Sound of her Wings," confirmed that Morpheus' big sister will "be in more episodes" of the DC Vertigo adaptation's sophomore run during an interview with Collider.

"Death is a large part of this season and there are some incredible stories with the family that I'm very, very excited for fans to see," Howell-Baptise said while promoting her new movie We Strangers at SXSW. “It's been fantastic going back actually, because this season, I think fans will be very excited for the episodes. It feels like the show is a two-way street, it's not just us putting something out, it's Neil listening, responding to the fans, and then in turn giving them the things that they are asking for, yelling for, begging for. So I think fans are gonna be really excited to have these stories expanded and have the complexities, and the family and, and all of those dynamics, see them even more this season, this continuation of episodes.”

Season 2 is expected to cover the "Season of Mists" and "Brief Lives" arcs, but it will also likely adapt at least a couple of standalone stories from Neil Gaiman's seminal saga, possibly including the Death-focused The High Cost of Living (though that may come later).

We will be introduced to some new members of Dream's family when the show returns, and a rumor doing the rounds online is claiming that Hanna star Esme Creed Miles has been cast as Delirium, who plays a major role in Brief Lives.

Have you watched The Sandman yet? You can check out our review here.

"There is another world that waits for all of us when we close our eyes and sleep — a place called the Dreaming, where The Sandman, Master of Dreams (Tom Sturridge), gives shape to all of our deepest fears and fantasies. But when Dream is unexpectedly captured and held prisoner for a century, his absence sets off a series of events that will change both the dreaming and waking worlds forever. To restore order, Dream must journey across different worlds and timelines to mend the mistakes he’s made during his vast existence, revisiting old friends and foes, and meeting new entities — both cosmic and human — along the way."

The Sandman also stars Tom Sturridge as Dream, Boyd Holbrook as The Corinthian, Donna Preston as Despair, Stephen Fry as Gilbert, Mason Alexander Park as Desire, Charles Dance as black magician Roderick Burgess, and Sanjeeve Bhaskar as Cain. Joely Richardson plays Ethel Cripps, while David Thewlis takes on the role of her son John Dee, aka the deranged Dr. Destiny.

I never read the books but i absolutely love the show and thought Netflix did a great job. I hope S2 is as good or better and expands on this universe. Hoping this show comes back sometime this year

I liked the first season, and I loved the comics.

I saw a really funny rage fight after season 1 was finished. One person was raging they turned death black as being woke, etc. The other knucklehead was raging that it was incredibly racist that Death was personified by a black person. Both people were going nuts and calling each other racist. It was truly hilarious.

@DocSpock - After seeing how great she was in the role, I believe Gaiman when he says he simply cast the best actress he could find. I admit to being a bit disappointed that they didn't all have the paper white skin from the comics at first, but understand why it wouldn't make sense for a live-action adap.

@DocSpock - man I f*cking LOVE when people call Sandman, the show, woke. The most diversed comic book of all time, who had a goddmant trans girl demanding to be refered as "she" in a page written em 1988 and people call the show woke. These mfckers make me laugh real hard.

@MarkCassidy -

I agree. I like movie/TV characters to look like the comics, but in today’s world, if they were all white, everyone would go crazy.

She did a great job.

wasn't a fan of the netflix show, sucks that they ditched the gothic visual style from the books.

"Kirby Howell-Baptiste's surprisingly chipper take on The Grim Reaper"

Didja read the comics? How is Death's portrayal "surprisingly chipper?" That's how she's always been depicted.

@ClintThaHamster - Yes, I mean the character - on the page and screen - is a surprisingly chipper take on the usual personification of Death.

As someone who wasn’t dialed into Sandman as a comic, I did pick up The High Cost of Living. If they adapt that, that’ll be a nice surprise. Kirby did a great job as Death. Such a tender performance.

My favorite series of all time. I own all the books along with Death's solo graphic novels. I was really happy with season 1 and can't wait for the new one.

I liked the show enough. Could've and should've been a lot better though. The writing was good, the cast was good, the production design and direction were meh. Sandman deserves better than meh, imo. Also, the comic was quite graphic and the show seems to be censored for a younger audience.

Looking forward to Sandman Act IV from Amazon way more. Chomping at the bit for that one.
