GAME OF THRONES Season 8 Teaser Promo Engulfs Westeros In "Fire And Ice"

The first promo or the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones screened during the show's Comic-Con Experience Brazil panel today before being released online, but it doesn't contain any footage from the hugely popular fantasy drama series.

Apparently, showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss did say they wished they had something to show fans in attendance, but the VFX simply wasn't ready. Still, the video below definitely serves as an exciting tease of what's to come as we see the map of Westeros consumed by ice and fire.

Winter is well and truly here! Game of Thrones season 8 is set to premiere in April of 2109.

In case you missed it, we also have a rundown of EW's recent coverage of the final season. There are some very mild spoilers.

The Final Table Read

The last ever table read was, understandably, an emotional experience for many of the Game of Thrones cast members, but for Kit Harington in particular as he had no idea what to expect having decided not to read the scripts in full beforehand.

Apparently, the Jon Snow actor cried twice during the read-through, and he actually revealed what brought him to tears the second time.

“Every season, you read at the end of the last script ‘End of Season 1,’ or ‘End of Season 2,’” Harington says. “This read ‘End of Game of Thrones.’”

Those Movie Rumors Were True

A rumor that showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss intended to have the climax of the series play out on the big screen did the rounds a couple of years ago, and that was indeed the plan.

The pair believed that a trilogy of movies was the only way to manage the budget that would be required for the massive scale of the finale, but HBO brass were not on board with this idea. They did, however, promise Benioff and Weiss that they would eventually have everything they needed to bring in a final season that was “a summer tentpole-size spectacle.”

Season 8 Will Feature Some Surprising Characters

During EW's visit to the season 8 set, they were "stunned" to witness a scene being filmed which featured several actors they did not expect to see. Unfortunately we don't have much more than that to go on, but as vague as this is, it's still bound to lead to a lot of speculation.

Could we finally see the return of Catelyn Stark as the undead Lady Stoneheart, perhaps?

Spoiler Control Was A Top Priority

After the entire season 7 plot wound up leaking online, it was decided that more security measures needed to be taken to ensure something similar didn't happen with this final season.

As we know, Benioff and Weiss have signed on to write a new Star Wars movie, and they actually received some advice on how to keep the finale's secrets in check from The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson and producer Kathleen Kennedy.

“They’ve given us a lot of hints about how to lock things down, things we never would have thought of or didn’t know were possible,” Weiss revealed.

The Opening Scene

EW's report avoids spoilers for the most part, but by way of a little tease of what to expect from the upcoming first trailer, they outline the setup for the season 8 premiere!

"Season 8 opens at Winterfell with an episode that contains plenty of callbacks to the show’s pilot. Instead of King Robert’s procession arriving, it’s Daenerys and her army. What follows is a thrilling and tense intermingling of characters — some of whom have never previously met, many who have messy histories — as they all prepare to face the inevitable invasion of the Army of the Dead."

Yes, that means we will get to see Dany and Sansa meet for the very first time, and it doesn't sound like Lady Stark is all that keen on The Mother of Dragons at first: "Sansa isn’t thrilled that Jon bent the knee to his fancy new Targaryen girlfriend."

The Final Battle

"Battle of the Bastards" director Miguel Sapochnik is returning to bring us what's sure to be an epic final confrontation between the defenders of Westeros and the army of the dead, and by all accounts it will be the most incredible battle sequence ever seen on TV.

It sounds like the majority of the sequence will take place at Winterfell, although the battle will actually intercut between "multiple characters involved in their own survival storylines that each feels like its own genre."

“It’s brutal,” Tyrion Lannister actor Peter Dinklage promises. “It makes the Battle of the Bastards look like a theme park.”

@Kyos - EXACTLY WHAT I SAID!!!

Blade runner 2049 was one of the most beautiful films I have ever seen. This was a hard body blow to me!

@Forthas - I mean, Dune with another DP can still look amazing, but damn... Deakins does spectacular work, and especially after BR2049 I was quite excited to see Villeneuve and him take on Arrakis. Oh well...

@Forthas - Well, at least they got a good replacement. Say what you will about Rogue One, but it looked incredible.

@MUTO123 - I am not decrying the replacement, but I was dazzled by the cinematography of Blade Runner 2049. I was hoping that not only would Dune be a good adaptation of the first book but also a visually amazing film. It could still be that way but the chances of it being so have declined in my book.

@Forthas - PLEASE no black chick as Chani. Chani should be Arab or Mediterranean. Hell, Gal Gadot would make a GREAT Chani. But no, Chani is NOT black. Enough of pandering.

That being said, and I will probably get crucified for saying so, but screw it - I hope they REALLY try and make this as close to the novel as possible. The Weirding Way, NOT some damned "sonic modules", The Voice in a better expression, none of the unnecessary gross crap that David Lynch puked onto the screen in DeLaurentis' film.

The version on Sci-Fi Channel (I think they were still called that at the time) was VERY good. I am still of the opinion that Dune is far more deserving of an entire series on TV. And, again in my own opinion, I think the whole series should start off with the prequels, Erasmus and Serena Butler and the Jihad against the machines, and end with the sequels, Erasmus and Omnius as an old woman and old man tending a garden, casting nets for Duncan Idaho, and ALL the story in between.

Something like Game of Thrones, on THAT massive a scale.

AND the same treatment for The Lord of the Rings.

AND, the same treatment for Michael Moorcock's Eternal Chamion series, with Corum Jhalen Irsei, the Prince in the Scarlet Cloak, Erokese, Dorian Hawkmoon, and the ultimate, ELRIC OF MELNIBONE with STORMBRINGER.

@bropous - One of the main points of Dune is the intermarriage between the houses and the manipulations of genes. So it makes sense that the different houses would be more homogeneous. The Fremmen did not have that practice so it makes sense they would be multicultural and specifically non-white since they live in the desert. That to me includes black and/or middle eastern type representations.

I hope they make it close to the novel also, but I am not opposed to them deviating from the story if it makes more sense to do so. The Wierding Way absolutely should be the martial arts training like in the book and not a sonic weapon. On that we agree.

The Sci-fi channel one was OK. The production value was horrid, but in the context of the budget they were working with, they probably did the best job any one could ask for.

@Forthas - The only thing I didn't really care for with the Sci-Fi Channel Dune miniseries (Dune, Dune Messiah, Children of Dune) was the costuming. Didn't really care for it, expecially the royal gowns. That's just me. But I do think they did a really good job.

But a full series starting with the prequels, then the original trilogy, then the sequels, would be a GREAT next step now that Game of Thrones is drawing to a close.

@ossie85 - That goddamned fat bastard, "The Mountain That Never Writes", has kept those who love the books on tenterhooks since 2011. Okay, so the show will go in a different direction, no problem. I am sure they will hit a lot of main points. But there is NOTHING like reading a new Fire and Ice novel right there in your hot little hands for the VERY first time.

Hope I get to see the next two books before I die.

King Joffrey approved. 👍

I always used to think Daenerys represented Fire, and Jon represented Ice.

Now I'm inclined to believe that the Starks are Ice (given that Ned Stark's sword was also called Ice) and that Jon is the bridge between two worlds, as he comes from both families: Stark and Targaryen.
