Earlier this week, HBO officially announced that their hotly-awaited Watchmen series would premiere exclusively on the premium network on October 20 at 9:00 p.m. ET.

The series, which will serve as a sequel of sorts to Alan Moore's original graphic novel, hails from the mind of Damon Lindelof (Lost; The Leftovers), who is attached as a writer and producer.

The freshman season is expected to run for nine episodes.

While plot details have been kept under lock-and-key, the series does boast quite an impressive star cast that will feature Jeremy Irons, Regina King, Jean Smart, Don Johnson, Tim Blake Nelson, Louis Gossett Jr., Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Adelaide Clemens, Andrew Howard, Tom Mison, Frances Fisher, Jacob Ming-Trent, Sara Vickers, Dylan Schombing, Lily Rose Smith and Adelynn Spoon.

An undisclosed actor has also been cast as Dr. Manhattan, who has seemingly returned to Earth.

Ah so we finally have the official thread for it, okay then, was confused about the timing of the news because we did find out earlier this week.

I am curious to see where this goes. A rewatch of the movie should be helpful.

It should have been 12 episodes.

@KoolerThanJesus "It should have been 12 episodes."

That's an odd opinion. Almost everyone on this board wants things shorter, as in 6-8 episodes. In any case the cost of the thing probably dictated that be as short as possible.

@JDL - it’s bc of the thematic significance of 1-12 as it pertains to the doomsday clock, clocks in general, and the amount of issues the original series had. It makes sense if you look at it like that but yeah it probably would have been unnecessarily stretched out if it was

Trying to figure out what my favourite Alan Moore comic book series is.

Gotta be out of Watchmen and Miracle Man.

Saying that I also loved his run on Captain Britain.

Just read Doomsday Clock #11 and man, I feel even more pumped for this! Everything about this looks hella good.

I'm considering giving Watchmen another read before the show starts.

I wonder if they will keep the exact events of watchmen in this universe vague. The reason I’m thinking this is they might want to leave it open so fans of the film can consider it a sequel to the film and same for the book fans. I think they are going hard book from what they’ve said but you never know.

@Twenty23Three - all they’d have to leave out is exactly what Ozymandias did to attack the cities. If they don’t directly say it was the alien or show it it could be set in either universe
SethBullock
SethBullock - 9/6/2019, 6:46 PM
@Twenty23Three @Ha1frican - They directly say it was an alien attack, there are pics from the filming locations with "alien invasion shelter" signs and they have the alien squid on them.

It's said (no idea if it's true) that Reagan and Gorbachov agreed to stop the cold war if there was an alien invasion in real life, that's supposedly one of the several reasons why Moore decided that Ozymandias plan would involve faking an alien invasion.

Manhattan worked for the USA, if he attacked other countries they could just think that he did it under the US government orders even if he also attacked US cities, the URSS could just blame the US even if the US government claimed that they were not involved in the attacks.

There are many other things from the comics that were changed or omitted in the movie that make it a failed adaptation (at least for me and for many others) even if it has some positive things, but the tv show will focus on following the comics ignoring (afaik) the movie, and that's the best decision imo.
