Marvel’s Jessica Jones Season 2 begins production in 2017

Marvel’s Jessica Jones will not begin production on the second season until 2017, which means it’s going to be a long time before Jessica Jones Season 2 is released on Netflix. Read more after the jump.

Unfortunately, we have some bad news, Jessica Jones fans. It’s going to be a while before we see Marvel’s Jessica Jones Season 2 on Netflix, sadly.

According to a report from Bloomberg, Marvel’s Jessica Jones begins production in 2017, which is about a full year later than we thought the series would start production.

Melissa Rosenberg, the showrunner of Jessica Jones, announced the news in an interview with Bloomberg’s Katherine Oliver and Vulture’s Stacey Wilson Hunt for “The City of Scenes” podcast, according to the report.

After Jessica Jones premiered on Netflix in November, it was clear the series was destined for a second season. Netflix and Marvel renewed the series for a second season shortly after. We assumed we would see another season of Jessica Jones this year or early 2017 at the latest. Well, that timeline seems to be completely wrong.

Production on Jessica Jones Season 2 has been held off to make time for The Defenders, the miniseries that brings together the original four Marvel-Netflix collaborations Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist. The Defenders begins production near the end of the year. Krysten Ritter who plays Jessica Jones will also star in The Defenders.

If production on Jessica Jones Season 2 begins in early 2017, there’s still a pretty good chance we will see the new season by the end of 2017, possibly around November like the first season’s release. On the other hand, if production does not begin until the late spring or summer, it could be 2018 before Jessica Jones Season 2 finds its way to Netflix.

It seems crazy that would possibly have to wait that long for another season of Jessica Jones, but there are so many shows and new seasons of Marvel shows coming to Netflix in the near future that it seems inevitable that Jessica Jones would be bumped until after The Defenders.

They can take their time and really craft something amazing. Season One was stellar and having even more time to work on season 2 will result in some great stuff.

This show was like watching paint dry, or grass grow. There should not be another season.

JESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSICAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!

it'll be hard to top the first one, but even without Killgrave there is still a lot to do with the "washed up superhero/private eye" premise. Hopefully they have have her move to a building with less annoying neighbors though, I hated all of them.

Considering Iron Fist is being done now, Luke cage is finishing and airing in September and they're starting Defenders at the end of the year they wouldn't have had time to put in season 2 of Jessica Jones this year.
More than likely after Defenders is done then they'll do Jessica Jones.

Makes sense. Defenders is a hell of a roadblock for all of these series and Punisher exists just to relieve some of the pressure.

An annual schedule is brutal on potential crossovers, so I'm hoping that by staggering them a bit maybe we'll get Daredevil in a movie sometime...

I'm sure the second season will be great, and I hope (against hope) that maybe the MCU is now fleshed out enough that some of her cases will be a little more interconnected.

And while I want to see Kilgrave come back, I don't want to see it in Jones' show. She's done with him.

Yesss this is the kind of Marvel news I've been waiting for.

So:
Luke Cage (sept 2016)
Iron Fist (Mar 2017)
Defenders (Sept 2017)
Jessica Jones 2 (Mar 2018)
Punisher (Sept 2018)

Gnar!

I'm not that excited, but I'll keep an open mind for this. Who knows? Maybe they'll introduce some cool stuff.

At least its not Agents of SHIELD.

The MCU shows in my opinion

1. Daredevil - Love it, 4.9/5
2. Agent Carter - Enjoyed it for what it is, 3.5/5
3. Jessica Jones - Disliked it (But hopeful for the future), 2/5
4. Agents of SHIELD - Hate this, cancel it now, 1/5

@MrDitkovich - You should see the latest season of Agents of SHIELD, it is actually far betetr than AGent Carter and, if you ask me... despite some wooden acting, it has turned out to also be better (or more interesting, at least) than Jessica Jones.

I don't think there was anyone who thought it would go into production this year. It's just not possible. They don't film Defenders and JJ2 at the same time that would be insanity. If we're lucky we will get 3 Netflix series next year; Iron Fist, Defenders, and Jessica Jones 2. If not 2018 is perfectly fine. I'm not in a rush to see more when we could be watch Defenders. Punisher will probably come out after JJ2 my guess.

(Sorry for the re-post)

Finally saw Civil War!

No Spoilers, but...

Zemo is waaaaaay better than reviews have let on. You might think differently, but I love him, and I think he will only get better.

I actually like the third act better than the already famous "Airport' scene." What an emotional, intimate, well done final act. Wow.

I'll save any further thoughts until the rest of North America has seen the film tomorrow night.

Not my favorite MCU film, but definitely among the very best.

I still have a very soft spot for talking raccoons - obviously - as well as the original Avengers and Winter Soldier.

Seriously, is this really a surprise? Because Iron Fist just started a few weeks ago -The Defenders is filming at the end of the year -and there are rumors going around that Punisher might be filming around the time of The Defenders shooting. Is it that much a surprise that Jessica Jones shoots NEXT year.

2016 - Daredevil season 2, Luke Cage
2017 - Iron Fist, The Defenders
2018 - The Punisher, Jessica Jones season 2

My guess is Punisher is taking what would had been a 3rd season for Daredevil. I don't know what Netflix is going to do about Luke Cage and Iron Fist getting extra seasons. They need to amp up their release schedule to more that just 2 shows per year.
superheronerdo
superheronerdo - 5/4/2016, 6:38 PM
@String - You're right, they should ramp up the release schedule. Many folks would like to see steady releases of subsequent seasons in a timely manner. It's somewhat unorthodox to wait roughly two years for a follow up season. And yes, pretty good observation made in regards to The Punisher potentially substituting for Daredevil season 3.

If Netflix is selling these shows like extended movies, then maybe Netflix can persuade its Marvel audience that staggered releases make sense. After all, audiences are used to waiting a few years for a movie sequel to hit theaters.

I'd rather see a Marvel television season each quarter. And then cap it off with a miniseries event every few years. Perhaps a rotating set of series to allow for staggered releases.

So in one year, we will have a season of Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and Jessica Jones and in the following year we would have a season of The Punisher, Marvel Show 6, Marvel Show 7, Marvel Show 8. Then cap that off with a miniseries event right before the next television season that sees the original four shows return. Each individual series would be released every other year.
