LOKI Season 2 Director Teases The Arrival Of The "Definitive Kang"

We've seen several Variants of Kang the Conqueror in the MCU, but Loki season 2 director Dan DeLeeuw has hinted that a "definitive" version of the villain has yet to make his debut...

Jonathan Majors made his MCU as a Kang Variant known as He Who Remains in the season 1 finale of Loki, before returning as "The Conqueror" in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

In the post-credits sequence of the Marvel Studios threequel, we met even more Variants (including Immortus, Rama-Tut and Scarlet Centurion), and got a brief glimpse of a massive assemblage of Kangs in the closing moments of the scene.

This week's episode of the Disney+ series will introduce (well, reintroduce) Victor Timely, one of the earliest incarnations of Kang who may or may go on to become He Who Remains. There's been some speculation that this take on the villain may actually be the "Definitive Kang," but it seems he's yet to make his presence felt.

"I love all the Kangs, I think Kang's a great character. I don't know that we've seen the definitive Kang yet, in terms of what I would envision the definitive Kang [to be]," director Dan DeLeeuw tells Screen Rant. "I think there's still someone yet to come out of the shadows."

It was generally assumed that Quantumania's Variant was being set up as the MCU's main Kang, but he was soundly defeated by Scott Lang and Hope van Dyne at the end of the movie. DeLeeuw appears to be hinting at the imminent arrival of the all-powerful Conqueror who will claim the spotlight in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, but will he show up during season 2 of Loki?

We'll just have to wait and see, but episode 3 might just give us a bit more to go on!

how long before this Kang dies?

They probably shouldn’t have called the version in Ant Man 3 The Conqueror. That should be the definitive Kang. Certainly not Victor Timely.

@mountainman - Yeah, totally. The Conqueror should mean the real mofo has arrived.

@Fogs - Conquerer got conquered by some Ants lol.

@mountainman @Fogs - Well, to be fair, if I were a Kang variant I would call myself something badass like "The Conquerer' or "The Annihilator" or some and not something more suitable like "The So-So One".

Seriously, just because he called himself that in "AM:QM" (or other people there called him that) doesn't mean he actually was the one true "The Conquerer". Plus if you remember, HWR tells Loki and Sylvie that he has been called by many names, including a king, a conquerer, etc. So who knows who the actual Conquerer is. They may all think of themselves as that, and given how many of them we saw at the end of "AM:QM" it's likely more than one of them refers to themselves using the same monikers. I mean, there are only so many badass adjectives out there (insert gif of three Kangs standing there pointing to themselves saying "I'm The Conquerer" "No I'm The Conquerer" "No I'm The Conquerer" a la the Spidey gif - just before they all get taken down by giant insects).

@StSteven - Yeah, I understand. But I guess @mountainman meant is they (Marvel writers) should reserve that nickname for the definitive one.

@Fogs - @StSteven has a good argument. I just think that Kang has been very poorly set up so far. Maybe they can right the ship, but as of today he is not a very good villain, regardless of what intimidating words are added to his name.

@Fogs @mountainman - Oh, yeah, I totally agree with you both. I was just throwing out a possible off-ramp for them at this point with having used that particular nomenclature already in a relatively weak way. I really doubt (hope), however, that they don't try something as weak as I was suggesting as a way of course correcting for that particular Kang. That being said, that Kang could return in a vastly more powerful form (i.e. The Beyonder) having merged with the multiversal engine after the events of "AM:QR". Either way I think (hope) that the plan was (or at least now is) to keep introducing more powerful versions of Kang as we go along building to whomever it takes the Avengers to take down in "A:KD". And if you think about it, it would have kinda tipping their hand to introduce the all-powerful Kang that takes the Avengers to defeat right up front. Sure, they did that with Thanos, but he didn't have all the stones yet so wasn't that much of a threat.

If I had to guess, they used "The Conquerer" in "AM:QM" because he had essentially conquered the QR, so the moniker fit, regardless of how powerful he actually was. But he was a threat to certain degree all by himself. And then the show us the Council of Kangs to make the point that if it took AM, Wasp, and an army of giant ants to take down one Kang, what would it take to take down countless Kangs? (hint: The Avengers). So I'm guessing that that's what we'll see in "A:KD" and between now and then we'll see different Kangs pop up posing different threat levels. And my further guess is that we'll see The Conquerer return as The Beyonder in "A:SW" with all that multiversal power behind him. At least, I'm crossing everything that I can safely cross that that's how they plan to land the plane with this.

It does not matter which version they have, Kang has died and been defeated in every single appearance he has been in, each of the times he has been defeated or killed by the weakest characters in the MCU and at one point by Ants biting him destroying his high-tech armour. If his variants can be defeated so easily, then he can be defeated so easily.

Nothing is interesting about Kang other than his armour which is just generic 31st century technology that everyone should have access to. To quote Iron Man "If you are nothing without the suit then you shouldn't have it".

He's not intimidating, neither in acting nor in character development. He spent countless decades just being incompetent in the Quantum Realm, being outsmarted and defeated by Janet Van Dyne who was dumb enough to not tell people that a multiverse destroying monster was in the Quantum Realm. Kang also was not able to escape the Quantum Realm despite spending decades trying.

At this point they've established an infinite number of Kangs, including 4 (?) who are supposed to be important - but all that means is we're going to see an infinite number of Kangs be defeated including the 4 (?) important ones. He'll never be interesting while the multiverse concept remains because he'll always have an infinite number of characters who can beat him easily.

@Scarilian - Actor real life drama aside, His movie image is ruined, it's like skipping Infinity war and seeing Thanos for the first time only to see him get beheaded seconds later and then have another one show up who's less impactful. There was some story telling potential with Antman's Kang being so powerful that the council banded together to stop him but you never got that impression, what could have been cool to see all happened off screen, just Like Hulk/Banner finally coming to terms with each other. Completely wasted potential.

I think the confusion is where does the Quantum realm fall in the universe. Because as we learned, He Who Remains was the Kang of Universe 616 and he harnessed Alioth's powers to create a barrier to lock 616 out of being entered. So if the Quantum realm is part of Universe 616, How did that Kang get there? Was he fighting He Who Remains and he was exiled there by the rest of the Kangs and He Who Remains then locked them all out? These are the questions that need to be answered to really sell the Kang threat.

@SonOfAGif - agreed. But I am almost certain they will not answer 💩. Kang has become a foot soldier level villain. One. Done. Hopefully we'll see him destroy a group of Avengers in the Secret Wars intro.

@SonOfAGif - It could be that the Quantum Realm is unique and it's linked to all the universes.
SonOfAGif
SonOfAGif - 10/17/2023, 1:05 PM
@Fares - That's my belief as well. That every universe shares the same quantum realm. As He Who Remains explained that the universes are stacked on top of one another. But until Marvel Studios confirms it. This is pure fan fiction and that's why this saga has been tedious with plot points not being touched on or fully ignored. Such as Tiamut's body.

bkmeijer1 - 10/17/2023, 2:46 PM
@SonOfAGif - wait, I thought it was confirmed already there is only one Quantum Realm. It makes the most sense as well, considering it is used to travel through to the different timelines (it connects all universes)
SonOfAGif
SonOfAGif - 10/17/2023, 4:59 PM
@bkmeijer1 - So it was confirmed that the Quantum Realm connects to different points in time. In Loki, He Who Remains explained that he isolated universe 616 and had the TVA prune every branch in time which would create its own universe if left unchecked or connect to a different universe. So as of right now the Quantum Realm has only been used to navigate universe 616. But that may change now that He Who Remains is no longer overseeing the timeline.

@Fares - what was that place in Quantumania? I always thought the TVA was in the Quantum Realm.

At this point I'm really hoping that isn't the case because Quantumania Kang was more dumb than I have thought.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 10/18/2023, 2:59 AM
@SonOfAGif - I guess it's all connected to the same timeline. Wonder how they will explain navigation between the different universes (like the paint universe we saw in Multiverse of Madness for example).

i just hope they recast him with 3-4 actors playing Kang at the same time, similar to what they did in The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus after Ledger died. Kang is a great villain to adapt, why Marvel limit themselves with only ONE actor when Kang has infinite numbers of variants.

We all assumed abtman 3s Kang was the definitive. Then they showed all the other kangs after. We mistakenly took it as the prime Kang being defeated. But what if thar after credits was showing us he was just 1 of many, many, MANY!
It does make things quite a challenge for our heroes!!
