MARVEL RISING: SECRET WARRIORS To Bring Groundbreaking LGBT Representation to Disney Channel/Disney XD

With the upcoming Secret Warriors film airing this weekend, it seems that the film may contain a landmark achievement for Disney and Marvel's animated projects.

One of the major points Marvel has been emphasizing in the lead-up to the release of Marvel Rising: Secret Warriors has been the diversity of the cast and characters. Now, it seems the film will actually have some landmark representation for a Disney animated project, in the form of LGBT characters. While Marvel animated projects have had characters who were LGBT in the comics (such as Max Modell in Spider-Man or Angela in Guardians of the Galaxy),  but this would be the first time they were actually referred to as such in the show. Greg Weisman has confirmed that the upcoming season of Young Justice will have LGBT charcters as well, but with that not airing until 2019, it seems like Disney may beat them to the punch. While Disney Channel and Disney XD have both had some form of LGBT characters in their shows (Disney Channel having a character come out as gay in the show Andi Mack, and Disney XD having background LGBT couples in Star vs The Forces of Evil), this would be the first prominent example of it in an animated form.

The characters in question, at least that were confirmed to be LGBT in Secret Warriors, are the parents of America Chavez, Amalia and Elena, who are seen in this preview clip below.

America Chavez herself is also a lesbian in the comics, though it is unknown if this will be addressed or referenced in the film, though if her parents are allowed to be referred to as openly gay it would be hard to imagine why it would be off limits. It is also reported that the show will be a full animated series, potentially airing on the Disney Streaming Service, though we may need to wait for the films' NYCC panel to hear more about Marvel Rising's future.

I think it's a good thing.

Most people first come into contact with LGBT people when they're in their mid to late teens. That is when their peers come out as gay.

Exposing kids to LGBT people as super heroes might do more to normalize the idea of different sexualities for the next generation.

However, they better not use this as a saving grace, cos if it sucks then it sucks - regardless of representation.

@MaximusTheMad - I agree people try to shadow their children from it as if it was a bad thing we have had longtime family friend who is gay so my kids grew up knowing being gay is not a bad thing if they choose to be or not.
Also off topic extended look for new Star Wars animation.

@guyatadesk - I really like the look of it too, as with you I wasn't too sure of the cel shaded animation but this is looking better with this extended look.

Since the article brought up DC, Maggie Sawyer on Superman The Animated Series was a lesbian.

@Darkknight23 - Also Renee Montoya on Batman The Animated Series, however I don't think her being lesbian was established at the time, and it wasn't exactly represented on the show.

@TheBatmanRules - I was thinking about Montoya, but I wasn’t exactly sure. Sawyer definitely was though.

Show is targeted for preteens and teens many of whom are either LGBT or have LGBT parents themselves as long as their is no sexual intercourse in the movie I dont see the big deal.

Hopefully not too many people who aren't even gonna watch this get mad about it for whatever reason

If they're gonna push the gay stuff, they gotta explain artificial insemination. It's only fair.

This is actually really awesome! Shame it's hard to find here in the land Down Under but hoping it is released on the Disney service. Hell I knew I wasn't a straight male at like six years of age, wish somebody told me or I had someone to look up to then. I thought it was how everyone felt about people 😅😅😅
