We only just found out that Oscar Isaac is in final talks to play the lead role of Marc Spector in Disney+'s Moon Knight, and it's now being reported that the highly-anticipated Marvel series has found a director.

According to Deadline, Egyptian filmmaker Mohamed Diab has been tapped to helm the show. The trade doesn't specify how many episodes he'll direct, however.

Diab garnered great acclaim for his directorial debut Cairo 678 and its follow-up Clash, which both focused on elements of political and cultural unrest in his home country. His next film, Amira, is scheduled to be released in 2021.

Jeremy Slater (The Umbrella Academy; The Exorcist) will serve as showrunner, and is leading the show's writing team.

No official synopsis for Moon Knight has been revealed yet, but the small-screen adaptation is expected to stick pretty close to the basic premise of the comic, with Marc Spector, a highly skilled mercenary who has numerous alter egos, channelling the power of the Egyptian moon god Khonshu to fight crime in LA.

We still don't have a timeframe for the start of production, but with a star and director now in place, it shouldn't be too much longer before we begin to get some official updates.

very smart going with an egyptian director, it helps bring some legitimacy to the admittedly bonkers background of the character.

@Spidey91 - Moon Knight reminds me a lot of Iron Fist in that they're both characters fundamentally about cultural appropriation. In 2020, there's a lot that could be said and explored about it with a critical lens, but also I'm pretty sure Marvel (Studios or TV) really aren't all that interested in it.

Casting non-white makes the sidestep less egregious in this case, but I do wish (or hope?) there's a desire to peel back some layers here. Black Panther wasn't afraid of pushing into some sharp territory, and people dug it. Some of these characters have social commentary in DNA, and some invite it because of the nature of their creation.

More than fighting aliens and saving the world, I'm more and more convinced that it's these stories (especially dealing with identity) that elevate superheroes to being worth a damn as cultural artifacts.

I want to be extra clear here. When I say "cultural appropriation", I don't just mean it in the negative colonial sense. Adopting another culture or converting to a new religion isn't necessarily a patronizing thing (but there may well be elements of condescension in the way these characters were created and presented in media).

This is why I want people smarter than me who have more to say about the issue to explore it.

Getting someone from 'Umbrella Academy' takes this up 20 notches for me. We're really getting a legit MOON KNIGHT show
