Marvel Puts the Brakes on The Runaways

In an article posted at Deadline, it's reported that Marvel has decided to put the brakes on the live action movie version of the Brian K. Vaughan comic The Runaways.

While some believe that this is because its demo is too close to that of Kick-Ass, which underperformed based on expectations, but Deadline says that's not the case: "Marvel simply has too much going on at the moment and will take its time on the live action adaptation of the comic hatched by Lost writer Brian K. Vaughan. It's called the Breakfast Club of superhero saga, dealing with the children of super-villains who are cursed with evil superpowers. They live in a secret lair under the La Brea tar pits, and try to use their unusual powers for heroic purposes."

Although director Peter Sollett is still attached for whenever the film does happen, it's been put to him that there would be time for him to do a different film while waiting for The Runaways to ramp up.

Probably for the best really as there are many other more interesting characters that Marvel could and should be focusing on IMO. Good stuff ED! :)

And for what it's worth,Runaways is NOTHING like Kick-ass. True, both are young people fighting crime, but Kick-ass is excessive violence and language to shock people-it's not really meant for kids. Runaways is.

@Phoenix...the demographic they mentioned was a target audience of mid to late teens. Not in terms of action, violence, or profanity.

When you add Nick Cage to the formula it instantly cheeses it up, which is why Kick Ass did not perform as well as expected.

"Good, so now they have more time to focus on a Doctor Strange movie. And an Iron Fist movie. And a Nova movie."

No, they won't.The reason they're pushing back Runaways is because they're going to have their hands full with Avengers and Iron Man 3.They won't be able to tackle those movies either.

They didn't cancel Runaways, the just pushed it back. It's still their next priority.

I think Disney should have let the Paramount deal play out and focused their time and money on producing and marketing Runaways, Dr. Strange, Iron Fist and maybe Black Panther.

@Intruder; I'm actually hoping for Avengers 2 to be released on 2015, which is 3 years after the first one. Gives them time to write a great storyline and for technology to advance a bit.

Bad news I guess, but there are lots of other properties I would rather see Marvel focus on before Runaways.

Some people still think there's a chance del Toro will direct Doctor Strange? Wow. I guess you haven't been following what he's up to: not only has he confirmed that he NEVER had anything to do with Strange and that rumour was based on a single casual conversation he had with Neil Gaiman over lunch, but he's also the busiest man in Hollywood and would never be able to fit it into his schedule.

Runaways delayed? Couldn't give a damn. There are so many more interesting characters than them.
