SECRET INVASION Reveals Why Nick Fury Doesn't Call In The Avengers... But Is It A Satisfactory Explanation?

Episode 2 of Secret Invasion debuted on Disney+ today, and, like the series premiere, "Promises" featured its share of surprises and reveals.

Among them was an explanation as to why Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) doesn't simply call in the Avengers to help sort out the Skrull invasion... but was it a satisfactory one?

The Avengers were assembled to deal with the type of potentially world-ending threats that S.H.I.E.L.D. and other government organizations were unequipped to handle, but because Earth's Mightiest Heroes can't show up in every MCU movie and series, the writers have often had to come up with reasons for their absence.

Spoilers from this point on.

In Secret Invasion, Fury makes it clear that this is his fight, but nobody was ever going to buy that as his sole excuse for possibly dooming the entire human race, so when he meets with Colonel James Rhodes (Don Cheadle) in a key scene, we are given another explanation.

When Rhodey asks why his old friend doesn't call for some super-powered back-up, Fury tells him that they can't risk any of the Avengers being captured and duplicated. This would seem like a valid concern - but keep in mind that Nick isn't aware that Gravik (Kingsley Ben-Adir) and his scientists have been using DNA from the likes of Groot, a Frost Beast and Cul Obsidian to enhance their soldiers at this point, which renders his reasoning a little flimsy.

After all, even if the Skrulls managed to take down one of the heroes, they couldn't replicate their powers (again, as far as anyone is aware).

What did you make of the show's reason for keeping the Avengers out of the story? Were you satisfied with Fury's explanation? Drop us a comment down below.

"In Marvel Studios’ new series Secret Invasion, set in the present day MCU, Nick Fury learns of a clandestine invasion of Earth by a faction of shapeshifting Skrulls. Fury joins his allies, including Everett Ross, Maria Hill and the Skrull Talos, who has made a life for himself on Earth. Together they race against time to thwart an imminent Skrull invasion and save humanity."

The series stars Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Cobie Smulders, Martin Freeman, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Charlayne Woodard, Killian Scott, Samuel Adewunmi, Dermot Mulroney, Christopher McDonald, Katie Finneran, with Emilia Clarke, Olivia Colman, and Don Cheadle.

Ali Selim directs and executive-produces, along with fellow executive producers Kevin Feige, Jonathan Schwartz, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Brad Winderbaum, Samuel L. Jackson, Ali Selim, Kyle Bradstreet and Brian Tucker. Kyle Bradstreet is also the head writer, and Jennifer L. Booth, Allana Williams and Brant Englestein serve as co-executive producers.

Too expensive? Is that the reason?

Seriously though, the comic version actually does justify his explanation.

@ObserverIO -
"the comic version actually does justify his explanation."

They have not read the comics because they viewed them as shit and wanted to do their own thing - as per the director and writers remarks.

@Scarilian - It's a happy accident then, lol.
For real though [frick] them to heck for not reading the books they're actually supposed to be adapting.

@Scarilian - im assuming the director and wrtier are some cool types who have worked on some low budget indie stuff, with no actual experience on action.

@iceballsreborn -
It's not uncommon nowadays for writers/directors to just abandon the source material feeling either that it's beneath them or in general hating the source material and wanting to do their own vision. In general it just designates a severe disdain for the audience that they should be trying to appeal to.

As much as Phase 1-3 varied from the source material, they at least read the thing they were basing these films off - you have behind-the-scenes videos where they've directly made notes and remarks on the original source material. We're just unfortunately in a time when garbage writers and directors just want to leave their own mark on things and insert their own viewpoints rather than caring about what was established.

Heck, the writer and director are so utterly shit that they did not bother to even watch Captain Marvel, the film that this series is a continuation of. They try and depict Nick Fury as incompetent and just not following through on his deal with the Skrulls, despite having 20-30 years in the MCU to do so prior to the Blip.

@Scarilian - to be fair, not many people want to sit through a viewing of Captain Marvel.

I am not watching anything on Disney+, legally or illegally.

It is clear to le that Kevin Feige has lost all talent he ever had and probably never had.

@MarvelZombie616 - As I have said before, the loss of Perlmutter gave Feige carte blanche and he pretty much answers to no one.

and with no one to say "no" ....you get what we have.

At any rate, aren't The Avengers disbanded right now? That was confirmed a while a go if I recall.

@MosquitoFarmer - This is what I was thinking. What Avengers? Lol

I suppose he could reach out to individual characters. Like Strange, War Machine, Thor....whoever. But there is no actual Avengers team right now.

He is basically alluding to the plot of the original Secret Invasion comics which did see various Avengers members outed as Skrull imposters. I think also it could imply that since he discovered that MILLIONS of Skrulls are on earth, a few could be Avengers already. Gravik saying he's already thought of what he would do if the Avengers get involved also adds weight to everything.

The real question is why Fury didn’t call Captain Marvel when NY was being invaded by Loki. Or did I miss that?

I think rhodey is a skrull but to your point Ror, fury doesn't know about what the Skrulls are using to enhance themselves. That's something we just learned from Olivia Coleman character.

Makes sense in fairness, and I'm happy for this to continue to be a paranoid sci-fi thriller for as long as possible before any superheroics come into play. The MCU sorely needs more genre diversity and stuff like this is a step towards that.

He didn't say duplicate their powers. He meant just their likeness. A person looking like one of the avengers can be shown doing something heinous that would label them a terriorist.

I wonder if this show is leading to the creation of Super Skrull setting him up to be the enemy of The Fantastic 4 movie?

I'm satisfied. It's all fiction anyway, I don't care. I'm just trying to enjoy these things while we have them.

The episode was fantastic, and I enjoyed it. In 1997 I was 13 years old. Gravik wants all the smoke. My favorite parts of the episode are Nick Fury's interaction with Talos and Rhodey. The action scene at the butcher shop was incredible. Lastly, I love the twist and turns in this series.

I'm really loving this show. It's not overusing the CGI, not busting with quips and jokes, and action pieces come second to actual character interactions. I thought that the Rhodey conversation, as well as the glimpses of Fury's past with The Skrulls were great.
Himura
Himura - 6/28/2023, 3:39 PM
This show is great. I dunno where the hate is coming from.

And yeah, it makes complete sense narratively, especially considering Rhodey might be a Skrull. It'd be stupid not to do this story without at least one Avenger revealed as one and this line from Fury is foreshadowing that.

People are too impatient nowadays. If all these episodes came out all at once like a movie, it would most likely make way more sense. But its a show. They're not gonna provide answers immediately. They need to lay the ground work down for the eventual pay off.

People need to remember that, unless you want to go back to weekly episodic adventures with a Freak of the Week villain.

I think at least Carol should be there. She failed the skrulls as much as Fury did.
