Episode 2 of Secret Invasion debuted on Disney+ today, and, like the series premiere, "Promises" featured its share of surprises and reveals.
Among them was an explanation as to why Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) doesn't simply call in the Avengers to help sort out the Skrull invasion... but was it a satisfactory one?
The Avengers were assembled to deal with the type of potentially world-ending threats that S.H.I.E.L.D. and other government organizations were unequipped to handle, but because Earth's Mightiest Heroes can't show up in every MCU movie and series, the writers have often had to come up with reasons for their absence.
Spoilers from this point on.
In Secret Invasion, Fury makes it clear that this is his fight, but nobody was ever going to buy that as his sole excuse for possibly dooming the entire human race, so when he meets with Colonel James Rhodes (Don Cheadle) in a key scene, we are given another explanation.
When Rhodey asks why his old friend doesn't call for some super-powered back-up, Fury tells him that they can't risk any of the Avengers being captured and duplicated. This would seem like a valid concern - but keep in mind that Nick isn't aware that Gravik (Kingsley Ben-Adir) and his scientists have been using DNA from the likes of Groot, a Frost Beast and Cul Obsidian to enhance their soldiers at this point, which renders his reasoning a little flimsy.
After all, even if the Skrulls managed to take down one of the heroes, they couldn't replicate their powers (again, as far as anyone is aware).
What did you make of the show's reason for keeping the Avengers out of the story? Were you satisfied with Fury's explanation? Drop us a comment down below.
