SHE-HULK: ATTORNEY AT LAW Head Writer Reveals They Had To Cut She-Hulk Scenes To Save Money On VFX

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law Head Writer Jessica Gao has revealed that they had to cut scenes to save money on VFX, and explains the complex process of working alongside Marvel Studios on a CG character.

Much has been made of Marvel Studios' relationship with the VFX houses that they work with, and with She-Hulk: Attorney at Law being such a CG-heavy series, you just know a lot of artists were put under serious pressure.

They certainly managed to make the title hero look better than she did in that first teaser, anyway, and Head Writer Jessica Gao has now shed some light on that process. For starters, she admits to not being heavily involved in She-Hulk's creation, simply because that's not how Marvel Studios works!

"Marvel is this kind of machine. VFX is one of those things where they already have their way of doing things," the writer tells Variety. "The machine just gets rolling. You can try to insert yourself as much as you can, but at a certain point, you’re forced to get out of the way."

"I just knew CG was expensive. From the beginning, I asked Kevin [Feige], 'How much can we do? How cost-conscious should I be? Give me some guidelines.' And he said, 'If I’m gonna watch a show called She-Hulk, I want to see She-Hulk.' That kind of was the carte blanche to just write it however I wanted. And I remember distinctly thinking, 'I hope we remember this conversation and the budgets come back and somebody gets mad at me for it.'"

As it happens, they did circle back to that conversation...the tone, however, had changed.

"Once we got into pre-production and production itself, once somebody had to sit down and start figuring out the cost of everything, it was like every week, I was told, 'Can you cut more She-Hulk scenes? Can you change more She-Hulk scenes to Jen? Can she be Jen in more scenes?' There were a lot of things that then had to be changed at the last minute to go from She-Hulk to Jen. Even in post, you know, we had to cut a lot of shots by virtue just because it was She-Hulk."

It's interesting to get some insights into Marvel Studios' process, especially with all that talk about issues with VFX at the moment. Having to cut scenes with She-Hulk was likely an inevitability on a television budget, though it does sound like a rather chaotic process for those working on the show.

Before you start to panic, though, we've seen the first four episodes of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and it definitely feels like there's more than enough of the Jade Giantess in the series!

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law's first episode premieres on Disney+ on August 18.

Explains why Ruffalo is in human form I guess…

So cutting out scenes of the main character purely because her being cgi was too expensive.

Maybe just paint her green?

@Origame - C'Mon man.. are you suggesting they lou ferrigno her? Because If she walked around looking like him people would riot. He looked terrible as the Hulk

Origame - 8/17/2022, 1:29 PM
@MyCoolYoung - what? Lou looked good all things considered.

Besides, hulk is different from she hulk in terms of adaptation because he has such ridiculous proportions even someone as ripped as Lou couldn't match that. She hulk looks more or less like a normal human. In fact, the design they went with is basically just the actress now green.

@Origame - She-Hulk MCU is 6'7" and overtly muscular. You aren't just finding a good actress with those physical traits, nor would it work today like it did when Ferrigno did it. It would look incredibly cheesy and stupid today.

@thewanderer - first of all perspective covers height.

Second, she hulk in the comics has has various different body types, some being just athletic. It's more than reasonable to just get the actress to go through a classic superhero body transformation to match it.

Finally, if all else fails, get a body builder and cgi the actresses face on top of it. Worked perfectly fine for free guy.

@Origame - I would guess that MoCap is possibly more cost effective than the route Free Guy went, and Free Guy went that route for plot purposes.
Origame
Origame - 8/17/2022, 2:21 PM
@thewanderer - ...you really think a mo cap suit would be more cost effective? It's a tiny bit of cgi for the face vs an entire body.

And what plot purpose? All that was required was a bigger more muscular body. Which is exactly the purpose here.

@Origame - I honestly don't know, but if I had to guess I'd wager that yes MoCap is cheaper than trying to digitally impose a different actors face into every shot and not make it look just like a crappy DeepFake.

Origame
Origame - 8/17/2022, 2:41 PM
@thewanderer - ...you even mentioned deepfake. That's free dude. So how much do you think it'd cost to for an upgraded version of it? And we know how expensive a full cgi body can cost, since they had to cut scenes with her purely due to cost. Not to mention all the cost saving methods you can do, like close ups of the actors face or times where the body double has her face turned.

@Origame - crappy deepfake is free.
Origame
Origame - 8/17/2022, 2:59 PM
@thewanderer - but even then, you can use a crappy deep fake then get a cgi artist to touch it up. That'd objectively be cheaper then the whole team needing to build an entire cgi model from the ground up.

Lmao greedy ass Marvel as usual.. they’re the most successful studio of all time and have all the resources but they’re still being cheap as [frick] with VFX. Makes it hard to root for Marvel when they’re cheap bastards.
thewanderer
thewanderer - 8/17/2022, 1:09 PM
@TheLobster - I'm not sure this post could be stupider.

Having a ton of resources doesn't equal having infinite resources.
TheLobster
TheLobster - 8/17/2022, 3:18 PM
@thewanderer - ahhh sticking up for the corporation that is being beyond shitty to VFX artists - cool man!

It’s very simple: they do have billions and they greenlit this show as a move to boost subscribers for Disney+ which is doing pretty damn well so if they’re gonna greenlit this - they should be doing it right and not cutting down costs.

You can’t have your cake and eat it too.

thewanderer - 8/17/2022, 3:27 PM
@TheLobster - I'm not sure you of all people should be accusing of anyone of having an agenda.

Billions or not, shows have budgets and they still want to make a "profit" for the show they are making. Being a billion dollar company doesn't mean you can spend whatever you want on anything you want. That's exactly how to NOT become a billion dollar company.
TheLobster
TheLobster - 8/18/2022, 3:52 AM
@thewanderer - I’m not saying you have an agenda - I’m saying you’re making excuses for a billion dollar company that got outed for being cheap [frick]s who exploit VFX artists.

What you’re failing to realize is that they greenlit this show knowing how much VFX would need to be done and they started cutting corners and at best it’s lame. Just watched the first episode and it’s already been a plot hole for when Jen should be hulked out and she’s not.

I’m not saying spend unlimited resources - just don’t be cheap for a show you agreed to do when you have more money than you know what to do with anyways. It’s called greed.
thewanderer
thewanderer - 8/18/2022, 7:32 AM
@TheLobster - and what you're not understanding, because you DO have an agenda, is that this isn't just a case of Disney cheaping out.

This is a case of them greenlighting a show with a budget, and a writer being too ambitious in what they were writing because, by their own admission, they had no idea how much their ideas would cost.

Once Marvel/Disney received the actual scripts, they asked for a compromise to scale back some things to fit in budget wise.

It's not being cheap, its called normal business procedure. I'm quite certain that every CGI heavy movie or tv show makes changes at some point to CGI shots because of budget. We're only hearing about this one because something was mentioned.

The year is 2022. They seemingly managed to pull off a she hulk live action project. Good enough for me
