Greeting fellow comicbook movie lovers! I rarely use my account or post anything here simply due to the fact I feel I have nothing ever to contribute, but I've been shocked as of late by all of the negative criticisms the recent Venom trailer has been receiving. I have felt personally that it looks like they're treating the character with respect, and I worry that a lot of the reason it has received a lukewarm response is because it is not connected to the MCU instead of being judged as its own thing. The image above for example recently came to fame due to the fact that many felt this specific quote was a case of bad screenwriting and were completely unaware that it was actually one of his most infamous sayings. But I noticed another specific instance of the film paying homage to the comics. Compare Venom's face in the image above to this screenshot from the trailer:
Nothing too out of the ordinary right? You might say that there is really no other way for Venom to look. However, fans are well aware that he has been depicted very differently depending on who he was drawn. A famous example is his iconic, monstrous tongue which was actually a later addition after his initial appearance by artist Todd McFarland. Here's where it gets interesting: Venom's various expressions throughout the trailer are all reminiscent of his appearances over the years. Here's another, from the same scene no less, that looks similar to his first appearance.
To me, it shows a great attention to detail and a respect for this character that the creators of this film have decided to have this film version of our favorite anti-hero look like an almagamation of his many different forms. This alone gives me reason to hope that this isn't a simple studio cash crab and is instead being treated with the same amount of care and reverence that any Marvel Studios movie benefits from. Are Sony learning from their mistakes? Let me know what you guys think in the comments!
