Venom Is More Faithful to the Comics Than We First Thought

Venom has so far had a divisive effect on fans, with many split between whether or not they view it as a film worthy of this character's great tradition in the comics. But is there something we overlooked?

Greeting fellow comicbook movie lovers! I rarely use my account or post anything here simply due to the fact I feel I have nothing ever to contribute, but I've been shocked as of late by all of the negative criticisms the recent Venom trailer has been receiving. I have felt personally that it looks like they're treating the character with respect, and I worry that a lot of the reason it has received a lukewarm response is because it is not connected to the MCU instead of being judged as its own thing. The image above for example recently came to fame due to the fact that many felt this specific quote was a case of bad screenwriting and were completely unaware that it was actually one of his most infamous sayings. But I noticed another specific instance of the film paying homage to the comics. Compare Venom's face in the image above to this screenshot from the trailer:

Nothing too out of the ordinary right? You might say that there is really no other way for Venom to look. However, fans are well aware that he has been depicted very differently depending on who he was drawn. A famous example is his iconic, monstrous tongue which was actually a later addition after his initial appearance by artist Todd McFarland. Here's where it gets interesting: Venom's various expressions throughout the trailer are all reminiscent of his appearances over the years. Here's another, from the same scene no less, that looks similar to his first appearance.

To me, it shows a great attention to detail and a respect for this character that the creators of this film have decided to have this film version of our favorite anti-hero look like an almagamation of his many different forms. This alone gives me reason to hope that this isn't a simple studio cash crab and is instead being treated with the same amount of care and reverence that any Marvel Studios movie benefits from. Are Sony learning from their mistakes? Let me know what you guys think in the comments!

It isn't about being "faithful", as Sony has proved that the look, feel and dynamic are present in the trailer. The character is sure, faithful. Everything else though is hinged on the idea that this is a "a new origin take on Venom....while being faithful".

What they did was this story was make it completely filled with tropes.

-Evil mad scientist who believes the symbiote is the next stage of evolution for humanity
-Reporter investigating scientific corporations with evil intentions
-He has an ex-girlfriend/wife who cares for him but chooses not to be with him
-Our hero is still in love with his ex-girlfriend
-The hero's ex/love interest is involved with the villains (See TASM for Gwen)
-The hero battles the villain where the villain is practically mirrored after the hero.

Venom just feels and sounds a lot like a rehash of many different sci-fi/action films rolled into one the only difference is the "unique twist in adding in a comic book character"

The moment they reused "evil scientist gone mad...for the third [frick]ing time", they screwed the pooch royally.

No Spiderman. If you really know Venom, then you know how unfaithful to the source material this is. I dont care if he looks like him, for the most part. Sounds like him, uses comic dialogue, says "We", it's not faithful without Spiderman. This might be the first time I ever wished for a CBM to do bad. Early tracking so far indicates a good opening though. And they already have sequel plans. Even if great I doubt Feige will let this be MCU. Because he has no control over what they do in these movies. He wont want someone else to water down his brand.

Besides the lack of Spidey in his origin, this movie looks really faithful. Especially if you consider the Lethal Protector mini-series.
And the lack of spider on his chest doesn't bother me personally, considering that he lacked it in the Ultimate Universe, too.

The complaints about "tropes" bother me too:
Show me a great movie or story without any tropes.
Breaking cliches and tropes have become a cliche themselves.

People are just butt-hurt because it's not part of the MCU.

@BootyPeep - No, people are just butt hurt because they are twisting one of Spidermans greatest villains, into something without Spiderman. People that grew up with his arc have a right to be butt hurt as you call it. And like I said, if the movie does great, they will do a sequel, and Sony themselves HOPE to be included in the MCU. Feige will probably say no. So Sony cant even commit to the changes they're making.
