Marvel Studios Rumored To Be Planning WHAT IF...? Season 4 As Kevin Feige Mulls Over An Animated MCU Movie

New details have emerged about Marvel Studios' animation plans, including a possible fourth season of What If...?, more cartoons on Disney+, and even an animated movie which will be released in theaters.

With complications caused by the pandemic behind them, Marvel Studios held not one but two splashy panels at the 2022 San Diego Comic-Con. The first was dedicated to the studio's animated offerings, with the likes of What If...?, Marvel Zombies, and Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man (then titled Spider-Man: Freshman Year) all showcased.

Since then, updates have been few and far between. Almost all the shows have been delayed, with What If...? season 2 and X-Men '97 both arriving quite a bit later than expected. The latter isn't expected to premiere until later this year despite merchandise based on the X-Men: The Animated Series revival being available in stores for several months.

This has led to speculation Marvel Studios might be moving away from producing animated content; in fact, it seems the opposite is true.

According to scooper Daniel Richtman (via Toonado.com), Kevin Feige is mulling over producing an animated movie for the MCU. There's no word on which characters it would revolve around, though it's an exciting prospect and something fans have been angling for ever since Disney acquired Marvel Entertainment.

Unfortunately, we doubt Pixar or Disney Animation will be involved. Marvel Studios will also have to pull out all the stops to compete with what we've seen from Sony's critically acclaimed Spider-Verse franchise.

Richtman also reveals that at least three more animated TV shows are in the works at Marvel Studios, while What If...? season 4 is now looking like a strong possibility. Similar to how a season 1 episode was pushed to season 2 and the same has happened again with the upcoming third season, it sounds like that would be the case for a fourth batch of episodes as well, with ideas carried over from season 3.

Earlier this month, What If...? director Bryan Andrews shared what he knows about when we might see season 3 of the hit series arrive on Disney+.

"They move stuff around. Every time I thought it was like, 'Oh, it's going to be this!' It's like, 'It's going to move a little bit!'" he explained. "So, even I would hate to say something and have people's hopes come up and then have them be dashed because of the beast of production and when things move around."

"I thought that it could come out at the end of the year in 2024 possibly, but that would be tight."

"There's some other group of people that are masterminding when things [release] and they're moving things on the board, and I don't know where we exist on that at this moment, as well as [Marvel Zombies]," Andrews continued. "Zombies, I'm still working on at the same time, and that's going to be crazy and that's coming out, but that keeps moving around too, right? So I wish I could help you but I can't!"

These are just rumours for now, but we're sure the animation fans among you will be pleased to learn Marvel Studios still has plenty of big plans - including the recently announced Eyes of Wakanda - for this realm of storytelling.

Another RUMOR article. When you say "rumored" in the headline I just skip reading the article and go right to the comments. Why waste time? Especially when, like Gunn has proven, 90% of the rumors are b.s.

@lazlodaytona - Feige is mulling! This is a game changer! Lol

@bobevanz - Oh yeah! And considering that he'll most likely keep wearing the hat once that thing grows out he's totally going to look like Mike Meyers in "Wayne's World".

Oh, wait, I misread that. I though you said "Feige is MULLETING!" My bad.

The Captain Carter show is already growing stale.

@mountainman - Agreed. The fact that they are establishing new characters and then following them throughout the season shows that they are more committed to creating new IPs than creating interesting content

@Izaizaiza - Captain Carter is a very interesting character IMO. I just don’t want the show to be about her. Id even rather get a show about those 80’s Avengers from the Peter Quill episode.

@mountainman - I would just love for the show to be one shots. Pondering if one decision had gone differently... Instead of a whole new [frick]ing interconnected universe 🤷🏻‍♂️

@Izaizaiza - I’m even ok if the different universes cross over here and there. But I want to keep seeing new ones and not have this larger overarching continuity to keep up with. It’s exhausting.

@mountainman - Agreed. I feel like marketing opportunities, not story service, are driving these decisions.

Like anything, if done well more animated Marvel stories would be great.

Animated MCU movie? Feige wants some of that Spider-verse action, huh?

Here's what you do.

Buy Sony. Then release Spider-verse 3, with extra Marvel characters. Boom.

Hopefully they will keep What If going on as long as the multiverse saga continues, but they need to flesh it out more, go beyond the slight variants of existing movies, more Happy Hogan Christmas-type ones, more Tesseract Native Americans-type stories or what they are doing with Friendly Neighbourhoood Spider-Man, changing the story from the beginning and going a whole new road. And have more incursions next season, jump more into the actual multiverse threats the MCU will eventually be facing

as for an animted movie, really make it worth being animated. Spider-Verse takes advantage of different multiverse settings, by giving us different gorgeous animated styles in each universe. If something keeps working in live-action setting, keep doing it. Theres not one MCU movie so far I would have liked to see an animated version of instead

@dancingmonkey08 - More Happy, more new and unoriginal characters, and more goofiness. Things are way too serious in their animation studio.

@JustAWaffle - Agreed. They need to have more goofiness in their animated series to contrast against the seriousness of their cinema. Plus, they should try more creative things, finally have a Hulk solo movie. He should get seriously injured within the first few minutes then have a female character, make her strong and independent to go against the damsel-in-distress trope, and follow her while she saves the day. Or have it be Hulk’s son, who’s gay, and have him save the day while focusing heavily on his relationship. Have lots of talking and working things out. Hill can wake up at the end of the movie. Something different like that, would bring in more fanbase, expand their market.

The first two seasons sucked. They missed the point/charm of the original comic series. One shot stories looking at a particular instance, let me asking what would have happened if that instance had gone differently.

The fact that each season is a long interconnected story, basically just one big story from another universe, shows that they missed the point

They might as well just retitle this as "The Captain Carter Show"

@knomad - Or "Adventures in the 824 universe".

@knomad - for season 2 yes, season 1 felt like the Supreme Strange show.

Nothing more than desperate acts to keep the ship afloat. Make a Avengers animal team film. Or The president is a duck?! Or the president is whatever you'll watch. F*ck you! July 19th!

One of the positives of being part of Disney is that they have the possibility of partnering up with other companies owned by Disney. Why not let Pixar or Disney make a Marvel movie? Surely it could be arranged, it's not like either studio is doing that great nowadays anyways.
slickrickdesigns
slickrickdesigns - 1/20/2024, 11:28 AM
@Urubrodi - I’ve actually been waiting for them to make a Toy Story remake kind of film with Ironman and Cap as the Buzz and Woody type lead characters.

Can I just say… We really don’t need a Marvel Zombies series. Keep it down to a 1 episode every other season of What If.
Please focus on a what if story that spans the 7 episode season. Like What If Captain America was a wear wolf, what if Silver Surfer or Adam Warlock was present for the Infinity Saga. What if Ultron had won. Etc.
I enjoyed both seasons of What If but I think I’d enjoy it more if they brought in more actual concept from the what if comics.
