Much to the surprise of pretty much everyone, What If...? included an appearance from Spider-Man. While it wasn't Tom Holland providing the wall-crawler's voice (Hudson Thames stepped in and did a great job), this was definitely the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Peter Parker...even if he was wearing the costume used in the Disney Parks.
There were almost certainly some complicated rights issues at play here, and Marvel Studios must have struck some sort of deal with Sony Pictures. Why? Well, otherwise, they could just let Holland's Spidey return to Sony and continue his MCU-set adventures in animated form on Disney+!
ComicBook.com recently caught up with What If...? director Bryan Andrews and asked if the web-slinger could return to this animated Multiverse in season 2. "Well, we can't talk too much about what may or may not be happening in Season 2," he responded. "But we do love Spider-Man, so who knows what may happen in the future. But yeah, we dig all that stuff, so it's just a question of if we're able to do enough shows or enough seasons, who knows what we'll get."
"We'll definitely be able to -- hopefully, at that point -- either revisit characters or revisit characters in a way that we are familiar with and then spin them even something else differently. You know what I mean? But when it comes to Season 2, we can't say anything about that stuff."
"What If...Zombies?!" ended with quite the cliffhanger, and it was the only one not directly addressed in the season finale. An undead Thanos wielding the Infinity Stones is quite the game-changer for that reality, especially as Black Panther, Spider-Man, and Scott Lang (his head, anyway) are the last heroes left standing between him and the Mind Stone.
Time will tell whether this or another Spider-Man Variant appears in What If...? season 2, but the series is expected to return to Disney+ sometime in 2022.
