WHAT IF...? Star Jeffrey Wright To Return As The Watcher Later This Year...But NOT In The Animated Series!

Jeffrey Wright lends his voice to The Watcher in Disney+'s animated What If...? but a new report suggests the actor is also going to play Uatu in another unrelated MCU project a little later this year...

Jeffrey Wright first made his debut as The Watcher in the animated TV series What If...?, and fans have remained eager ever since to see him play Uatu in live-action.

Well, we may be one step closer to that actually happening.

According to The Cosmic Circus, we'll see Wright make his return as The Watcher later this year, though it won't be in What If...? season 2 (as things stand, that's not expected to hit Disney+ until 2024). This will mark his first appearance out of that series and suggests there are serious Multiversal shenanigans afoot.

So, when and where could it happen? The site doesn't specify, though we don't think it will be in Secret Invasion or Echo. The Marvels is a possibility, of course, especially as it's a cosmic adventure but we can't help thinking that Loki season 2 is the far more likely possibility.

That series will put the Multiverse front and centre, and with it likely setting the stage for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, The Watcher showing up to observe events makes perfect sense.

However, it's worth noting that the site teases the possibility of "another project on the way this year that hasn’t been announced," so we'll have to wait and see.

Between the mixed response to many of Marvel Studios' Multiverse Saga projects and the fact The Flash bombed, there are those wondering if we'll see Kang the Conqueror's story put on the back burner (particularly as Jonathan Majors' legal issues are a long way from being sorted out).

It's hard to say whether that's going to be the case, particularly as the studio seems committed to telling this Multiversal story. Loki and Deadpool 3 could go a long way in winning over fans, of course, though we wouldn't be surprised if the rest of this story is primarily confined to the next two Avengers movies after that.

Where do you think we'll next see The Watcher?

Why not The Marvels? Why does it have to be exclusive to Disney+?

@SonOfAGif - The Marvels was mentioned as a possibility.

@AmazingFILMporg - I wouldn't say there is a Horror Movie fatigue. People are just exhausted and bored of the typical "Ghost + Demon" horror movies that are basically the same concept over and over again. Where films like Prey, Nope, Get Out, Us, The Black Phone, Scream VI, 10 Cloverfield Lane, and others have done well because they take the concept of Horror and make it more refreshing. If you watch Insidious, Paranormal Activity, and The Haunting of whoever the hell, they all feel like the same movie over and over.

@AmazingFILMporg - Not talking about the show exclusively. But the movies with "The Haunting" in them. Such as "The Haunting of Molly Hartley" and so on.

I haven't loved some of the choices made, on what Marvel has greenlit in recent years. But I don't think The Flash bombing, will have any negative effect on the MCU. On the other hand, Blue Beetle & Aquaman could be in trouble.🤣 We'll see.

Feige has to be alittle worried seeing DCEU failing cause it makes the genre look bad.

Make no mistake, Feige wants a healthy DC.

@AmazingFILMporg - Explain why Guardians Vol 3 and Across the Spider-Verse has done well then? I think the general audience have been swallowed by the brand when it comes to the superhero genre. The way Apple fanatics foam at the mouth of Apple Products. Android users don't care. But Apple users will flock to whatever Apple makes. Same as Marvel Studios. They own the genre now.

There is fatigue. It's clear as day. Just because a few are successful films doesn't mean there isn't fatigue. 💁

@AmazingFILMporg - I'm sure there is fatigue. But Marvel Studios as a brand will always have people flock to see their films. Where as WB are struggling to convince the general audience to see their films.

@SonOfAGif - people aren't putting up with trash content anymore. Everyone has become more choosey. We've all seen so much Superhero content and we know what's good vs what isn't. Guardians 3 is quite indicative of this.

So my theory is that The Watcher will break his oath and pull Captain Marvel into his cosmic viewing room and show her the entire multiverse completely going berserk and how different universes are experiencing Incursions. And give her a heads up as to what's coming for Universe 616 and that if she must gather the strongest warriors of Universe 616 to protect their universe before it collapses.
