Animated CASTLEVANIA TV Series Officially Announced For Netflix At Some Point This Year

We've been hearing whispers of a possible Castlevania show for quite a while, and now Adi Shankar has announced that the first season is set to debut on Netflix at some point in 2017. More past the jump.

Last night, Netflix sent out a press release announcing their programming slate for the year, and a show based on the popular Castlevania video game series was mentioned without any fanfare and no details whatsoever.

It was assumed that this must be the animated series we had heard was in the works from Adi Shankar (Dredd, The Grey, that "gritty" Power Ranger short), and sure enough, the man himself officially confirmed it soon after via the Facebook post below:

Shankar has previously teased a "dark, satirical" adaptation that would "flip the vampire sub-genre on its head," and now he's promising the "western world's first good video game adaptation." That remains to be seen of course, but with talent like Warren Ellis and Adventure Time's Kevin Kolde involved, it should be well worth a look at the very least.

Tell us, are youy looking forward to seeing The Belmont family slay bloodsuckers on Netflix, or would you have preferred a live-action feature adaptation of Castlevania? Sound off below.

This could be beat! I would be more excited about an announcement of some new 2D Castlevania games being released on next gen consoles. I need another Symphony of the Night!

Didn't know it was animated, Shankar didn't mention that.

@ODanil - No he didn't here, but that's what's being widely reported. I guess it's possible plans changed.

Just throwing this out there, Assassin's Creed had everything going for it with a great cast, director, writers, and an original approach for a film adaptation. And it still failed to deliver. Not saying this show will be bad. All I'm saying is that we can't put our hype or expectations on these video game adaptations anymore. Hopefully this changes things, but I'll be expecting Legend of Chun Li from this until otherwise stated.

Damn, I thought the thumbnail pic was Gargoyles at first before I read the headline. That needs a live action movie so bad.

Cool. I swear Castlevania III (Japanese title Legend of the Demon Castle) has the greatest soundtrack for a game ever.

I hope this is good I love the games. However, this dude is a real weirdo so I don't like him that much. I watched a collider heroes with him and he made very thing awkward and strange

I'm all over this. Castlevania was one of my first jumps into video games back in the old NES days. Cannot wait.

Only if IGA is asked to watch its production.

They need to make it like the box art for the first couple games. Big barbarian guy punching zombies and mummies and other such monsters in the jaw. Leading up to the archetypal Dracula with widows peak, mouth full of teeth, and sensible three piece black suit. Not so much the later incarnations like in the banner. With overly beautiful androgynous characters. Those never seemed too intimidating..

Don't hold your breath on this year release, mind. Animation always delayed! Voltron s2 got pushed back 3 months and that was done same time as s1.

I love these games, especially 1,2,3 and Symphony of the Night (one of my favorite games ever, actually). Last I had read anything about an adaptation was the Paul W.S. Anderson had the rights, and I think he's a terrible, hack director and didn't want him anywhere near it. So, while I'd prefer something live action, a movie trilogy in particular, I could get on board with this. Netflix is a great choice. Will definitely check this out.
