We first heard that Netflix was planning to adapt Mark Millar's 2004 Dark Horse comic trilogy, American Jesus, back in 2018, but updates on the project had been practically non-existent since.

Now, the streamer has unveiled the first poster for the series, which has been retitled The Chosen One.

Millar confirmed that the first season will adapt the first graphic novel, Chosen, while also sharing the show's premise.

"A little kid finds out that the reason his mother disappeared with him and they're hiding out in a small town is because he's the returned Jesus Christ and they're doing everything they can to stay alive so he can grow up and face the Antichrist in the City of Megiddo as per the biblical prophecy."

"What they've done with this is just masterful," he added. "It looks like Roma or City of God, a six part series of absolute beauty, and I've loved every second of this."

Check out the poster, which sees the messianic protagonist staring at some power lines in the shape of a cross, below.

Netflix's The Chosen One was directed by Everardo Gout (The Purge), who also produced and wrote the series with his brother Leopoldo Gout.

No official premiere date has been announced.

@JobinJ - I wanted to make a political joke about American Jesus, but all of the sudden I don't feel the need anymore because of the MAGA hat

Think it would be so much more interesting if a premise like this has Jesus showing up in a non-Christian country instead

@Killuminatic - I was thinking something like Sri Lanki, but Thailand could work as well I guess

@bkmeijer1 - graphic novel isnt that good. Theres also a predictable plot twist at the very end. Nothing innovative or surprising in today’s movies.

@Boredasffff - I'm guessing it turns out he isn't actually God's son then (either because he's just a regular dude, or actually Satan's son instead).

Either way, it would be more interesting if it wasn't set in a Christian country

Is there anyone who has more adaptations of his work, yet with all of them making huge changes to it, than Mark Millar?

I remember meeting Mark at a signing at my LCS and he was telling us how this was originally pitched to marvel for part of the Ultimate line and was meant to be called Ultimate Jesus.

"Returned Jesus Christ" 🤔

I see, fantasy and imaginary stories are still very popular in Hollywood to make films and tv shows about! 😃
