Marvel Comics fans have repeatedly expressed their disappointment that Sony gave Venom a PG-13 rating, despite being an adaptation of a violent cannibalistic anti-hero. Actor Tom Hardy went on to claim that roughly 30-40 minutes of his favourite scenes ended up on the cutting room floor, fueling hopes of an uncut home video release. In light of the film's success, however, it doesn't appear that the filmmakers have any interest in releasing another cut of the film. As director Ruben Fleischer said in a recent interview:
"I'm proud of the movie we’ve put out, and I think that the additional material on the DVD adds a little bit of color to the film. I don’t feel the need at this point to release an unrated version, I feel like fans seem to really like the movie that we put out."
Sony seems to feel the same way, because producer Avi Arad has previously expressed his disinterest in an R-Rated Venom sequel: "When you hear Carnage, the only thing you can think of is R. But, if you know his story, if you really know the comic, there’s no R here. He's a tortured soul. It's not about what he does, because we never have to show the knife going from here to there, and the blood is pouring."
Venom is currently available on home media and digital platforms.
