Venom doesn't take place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe but fans are convinced we'll get some sort of Spider-Man mention as the wall-crawler is such a huge part of Eddie Brock's origin story and the reason he becomes a Lethal Protector in the first place. Unfortunately, producer Matt Tolmach (The Amazing Spider-Man 2) refused to even reference Spidey when asked about his possible role.
"We’re making a Venom movie, is what I’m going to say to you," he replied. "A Venom movie, with Tom Hardy, and I think you will be very pleased." Asked again whether Peter Parker is out there somewhere, he once again said, "We’re making a Venom movie … and I’m excited for people to explore it, and find out what that is." So, is Sony keeping Spidey's role under wraps or is Tolmach covering up the fact that we're getting no mention of him, something sure to upset comic book fans.
On the plus side, he did have plenty of good things to say about Tom Hardy's take on the character! "Tom, it’s like a master class watching him act every day, and he’s such a risk-taker. And he loved this character from the day that we first met with him. My partner, Avid Arad, and I, we found someone who just believes in this character entirely, and yet every day pushes it to a place that us mere mortals would never expect it to go." That part, thankfully, does sound absolutely perfect.
Tolmach and Avi Arad were removed entirely from the Spider-Man franchise once Kevin Feige became involved but are still working on Sony's various spinoffs. Are you excited to see Venom next October?
