VENOM VFX Artist Hints At Bigger Reason For The Symbiote's Controversial Redesign In 2018 Movie

A VFX artist who worked on 2018's Venom has elaborated on why certain creative decisions are made with costumes, suggesting there may have been bigger reasons at play for Eddie Brock's divisive redesign.

While it was obvious Sony Pictures' Venom movie wouldn't include Spider-Man, there was still a fair bit of excitement for the 2018 blockbuster prior to its release. Unfortunately, it was perhaps too much of a departure from the comic books for many fans and reviews also weren't overly kind.

The movie was, however, a box office hit that spawned a much better sequel in Andy Serkis' Venom: Let There Be Carnage. One sticking point in both movies was the design of the titular character's alien costume and, across both movies, it was more than a little underwhelming.

It's because this version of Venom has never crossed paths with Spider-Man, he doesn't have the classic white logo on his chest. In fact, there's nothing there, a surprise considering the fact this franchise could easily create a new design which would bring Venom more in line with his comic book counterpart.

Now, a VFX artist who worked on the 2018 movie has shared some insights into why alterations like this are made.

It's interesting that rights issues are mentioned and we now can't help but wonder whether Marvel Studios' deal with Sony to share Spider-Man played a role in why the white, spider-like logo is absent.

At the end of Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Eddie Brock found himself transported to the MCU and his Symbiote showed a great deal of interest in the wall-crawler. After he was sent back to his own world at the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home without ever meeting Spidey, we no longer anticipate these two sharing the screen.

However, a piece of the alien was left on Earth-616, suggesting Tom Holland's Peter Parker could eventually don that costume.

Venom 3 is currently set to be released in theaters on July 12, 2024.

I think that element is just nitpicking.

There are so many designs for the eyes out there. This is basically saying "you didn't do the eyes I liked".

The white spider logo is different, though understandable given the premise of this new version.

Oh, the reply to that guy gives me the impression Sony only has rights upon Venom's first appearance, which is more like their movie version (specially the eyes).

Maybe the logo has something to do with the Disney deal more than anything.

The bottom shot is a nod to Bagley's Venom.

The top, a nod to McFarlane's original. They'll probably go with the bottom look when he faces Holland.

It's almost as if Marvel has their own plans for Venom. /s

In reality - they probably do. They'd be fools not to introduce their own once Tom Hardy finishes with the franchise after Venom 3 and/or Secret Wars. It would explain why not only does Venom look more like Ultimate Venom than he does 616 (outside of the head), but it explains why his abilities are more in line with the Ultimate version as well. No webbing (and lets be real, they could have given Venom black webbing just like Spider-Man 3 if they wanted), no bone spider-logo, extended use of tendrils, lack of proper wall crawling, as well as the fact that Venom was killing Eddie at the start. Ultimate Venom constantly needs to feed on others or else the suit will kill Eddie. So the vampirism is there albeit explained in a simplified manner that kinda meshes with 616's chocolate and the chemical phenethylamine.

The deal with Spider-Man probably included a rights agreement that Sony's Venom be based primarily on Ultimate - so when the inevitable MCU Venom arrives (again, they'd be dumb not to when Venom is consistently one of Marvel's best selling books) he goes through the entire Spider-Man hatred saga and has his traditional power-set and appearance.

Probably saving the classic design for other better outlets such as the Spider-Man 2 video game and hopefully the MCU.
