Josh Trank Briefly Talks SHADOW OF THE COLOSSUS And Video Game vs Film Storytelling

Josh Trank has been in the news of late, mainly to debunk Fantastic Four rumors. But what about his other project, the Shadow of the Colossus adaptation for Sony? Inside, Trank talks about his love for Team Ico and Suikoden II.

Trank was a hot commodity following the surprising success of Chronicle, which also launched the careers of Dan DeHaan and Michael B. Jordan. Following that film's success, Trank quickly found himself attached to Venom and Shadow of the Colossus films for Sony, The Red Star for Warner Bros. and of course Fantastic Four for Fox. It now appears that Alex Kurtzman is writing and directing Venom for Sony, but Trank is still apparently attached to Shadow of the Colossus. When Edge-Online asked what he could share about that project, Trank stated, "I can’t talk about it, but I’ll say just one thing: I got Ico as soon as it came out, and I just loved that game so much. I knew immediately when I read that [game developer, Team Ico was]
making a new [video game] that I wanted to go out and get it as soon as it came out, too, and it just blew me the [frick] away. A couple of years later, I remember seeing in Variety that it had been optioned. I must have been 22 or something, Chronicle and I just knew, ‘Oh my God, if somebody’s doing that, I have to somehow get in there and make sure it’s done the right way.’ It was one of the first calls I made after came out – when I realised I could make calls about things. I was like, 'Hey, what’s going on with that?' We’re [currently] working on it."

That's all Trank would divulge on 'Colossus' but he did talk about the video game industry as a whole and if recent advancements in storytelling in games like The Last of Us, are an indication that video games could one day rival the storytelling feats inherent in movies? "No, I don’t think so," said Trank. He continued, "I think that games are doing their own thing. I don’t think it’s a question of better, because it’s just a different experience. A lot of big sci-fi movies – and I won’t say any particular movies – are made with an awareness of the popularity of videogames, and therefore borrow so [many] of the design and visual ideas from those games. I’m like, “Man, that looks like Mass Effect. Those look like Mass Effect suits.” And that is not at all original or different. I also feel there’s a creative drought in Hollywood right now, because most of the young guys who would come in and be the next young, big directors are all in the videogame industry. I think if the game industry had been what it is now in the ’80s, a lot of those great Amblin [Entertainment] directors and people from that era would have been in games, too."

And lastly, what was Trank's favorite video game growing up? "I would say my favourite videogame of all time is Suikoden II on PlayStation. It was one of those games that made a huge epic promise on the box, and then it totally [frick]ing delivered in every way. The game box itself advertised on the front ‘108 totally unique characters’, and I swear to God there are 108 totally unique characters. The score in that game, and in each of the individual towns, is just the best music ever."

Trank hasn't done anything constructive in any of his 'projects'.......his work is as good as me talking about how to make a good particular movie.

Very intrigued by his F4. I think if they play their cards right it could be what GL should've been. A epic space adventure( in the negative zone)

The thing about video games is they're like movies themselves. So when a studio makes them into a movie and don't follow the story scene by scene it becomes almost like a crappy remake.

Its been awhile between movies for this guy but once things settle down with Fantastic 4 and Trank can start to churn out movies every 2 or 3 years he could have quite the resume pretty soon.

Please don't make a SOTC movie just don't. It is perfect how it is I don't need to see a movie tarnishing it. The game is supposed to make you sad when you have to kill a beast. So how are they going to translate that into the film when you rant killing them? The real question is when is the Last Guardian coming out on the PS4. Last I heard it switched platforms from the PS3 to the PS4 and there has been no news since then.

Also I personally don't think video games need movie adaptions because all that would be different would be better graphics. The only thing that would work though is if you tell a different story from that universe. Because why do you need to hear the same story twice? Everyone is always complaining about remakes but that is pretty much the same thing.

I can't tell you how many people want to see a live action version of the Last of Us telling the same story again about Joel and Ellie. But me if they do ever make a Last of Us movie I would prefer to hear a new story about other people trying to survive in that world. Another idea would be in the early days of the breakout staring Joel. There is twenty years that wasn't covered in the game. So it could be about that instead.

Take even Halo back when it was getting made it was to be about the early days of the Spartan Project and follow other people and not really John. Which I personally preferred but on different websites like Neogaf lots of people didn't like and wanted John's story about Halo 1. So they were happy when it was canned.

Shadow of the Colossus was everything. The visuals were just so epic to me and it was a decent story as well. I was deployed when I bought that one so I was completely engrossed in that world. That should make for a fantastic movie and there is a ton of room to flesh out the story further...

Much like CBM s, movies adapted from video games (VGMs) can reach a wide audience that may not be into video games [anymore]. That being the case, the stories that seem redundant to a hardcore gamer, would be new to the general audience. Hell, even hardcore gamers don't play every game, so, there that goes...

And make no mistakes about it, there is some excellent stories being told on your local consoles. Why wouldn't Hollywood take a chance on them?

hahaha@ Mexican Supes. If not on purpose, that auto-correct. Been looking up "closeups" recently aye?

But, I just wish someone could do Street Fighter to Resident Evil, RIGHT. Street Fighter LOC wasn't SO bad, definitely not like 94s. Resident Evil..always sucked to me.

Shadow of the Colossus will be ruined. It's an intimate single player experience where you have to experience it yourself by fully immersing your thoughts and emotion with it.

Suikoden is fvcking amazing. I probably logged in 400 hours on Suikoden 2 alone.

Still not a big fan of the guy..
and SOTC should just be left as a great game... not some jack the giant slayer remake bullshit action movie.

I gotta hand it to the guy.. he has great taste in classic RPG's though. Suikoden 2 was THE RPG for me as a kid.. and damn, that story is amazing and simple enough that it might just work in a movie.. certainly better than SOTC.

The one RPG that would make a great trilogy or series.. is Ni No Kuni.. Level-5 and Studio Ghibli... its like harry potter meets dragon warrior meets pokemon... fun for the whole flippin' family now ent it, mun?
