MORTAL KOMBAT: BATTLE OF THE REALMS Writer Jeremy Adams Has Plenty Of Ideas For Sequels & Spinoffs (Exclusive)

Jeremy Adams (Supernatural) penned the screenplays for both Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge and Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms, meaning he's now extremely well-versed in this iconic franchise. While the latter movie will be released on August 31 on 4K/Blu-ray & Digital, we couldn't help but wonder if the writer has already set his sights on what comes next.

We'll bring the full interview to you a little later today, but for those of you hoping to see this animated world of Mortal Kombat continue to expand, Adams has plenty of ideas about how that could happen.

"Heck yes! Of course I have [Laughs]," he responded when we asked if he has any ideas about a possible third chapter. "In my head, I’ve got ten movies! With how big of a deep dive I had to do on this world, there’s a lot of stories that just weren’t explored explicitly."

"In Scorpion’s Revenge, they mentioned it, but I don’t think the origin of Hanzo had ever been committed to memory that way. We explored and expanded that, and put it down so people could see it. There are tonnes of that in Mortal Kombat. Each character has an elaborate backstory, and I would love to be able to explore them in a tournament setting or individual character films if they let me. That’s up to the higher powers. I had a great time doing what I did."

These comments echo what producer Rick Morales told us recently when he said, "There are so many places, so many story opportunities, so many great characters...I really do think this is a franchise that could stand alongside the DC Animated Universe" (read the full interview here).

Warner Bros. Animation tends to keep these projects a well-kept secret until they're officially announced, so the future of this Mortal Kombat franchise beyond Battle of the Realms is unclear.

We'd love to see some spinoffs that flesh out the heroes and villains from the first two movies, while we can tell you that this sequel...well, it definitely lays the groundwork for more stories. Time will tell on that front, of course, but we'd love to see Adams make his return to this world as the architect of a shared universe. Check out the Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms trailer below:

I'll check it out for sure, especially since it's seemingly adapting MK3.
Let's see how they adapt the universally hated MK4 lol

Speaking of MK though, why hasn't there been an announcement for a sequel to the theatrical release yet?
According to WB it was a smashing success for them and with the low budget it had it must have broke even on its first weekend.

Really hoping this writer gets to be involved with the live action films. He seems to know his lore

If they ever do another attempt at live-action, I hope they make it a tv show. Because it is indeed like Adams says, every character has an elaborate backstory (and added to that is tonnes of lore).

As for this animated attempt, I do hope they can make more of them. I might be the only one, but I really wanna see Onaga. Because I do think it's a character with potential. And otherwise just go in the direction of Injustice vs. Mortal Kombat.

@bkmeijer - they tried the TV aspect with MK: Konquest (prequel to the movies in the vein of Hercules/Xena) and MK: Legacy (web series about the origins of each character).
I don't think it's a story for network television but an HBO Max show in the vein of Wu Assassins could work for sure.

@Blergh - or like Warrior. Anything that's similar to Warrior is welcome

I haven't seen the animated stuff yet but the reboot live-action reignited my love for MK. Without a shred of irony, this Scorpio mastered Scorpion as a kid, then Sub-Zero. I adore them and the storytelling to action ratio was PERFECTION. I can take or leave Johnny but I'm so excited to see how the story builds with sequels, who they introduce as a greater threat than what we were already treated to. I hope it spawns a cinematic universe to rival the MCU. I still prefer the comics and always will...ready to dive into the MK lore and films/series I have yet to enjoy!

Well, I gotta say that I never expected to see Reiko popping up in any Mortal Kombat media again. He's having a big year as a disposable character. First in the live action movie and now this.

Good(?) for you, Reiko.
