TOMB RAIDER Is Also Getting A Movie As Amazon Plots An MCU-Style Slate Of Lara Croft Projects

Following the news that Phoebe Waller-Bridge (No Time to Die) is penning a Tomb Raider TV series for Prime Video, it's now been confirmed that Amazon is also developing a movie. Read on for details...

Phoebe Waller-Bridge is currently developing a Tomb Raider TV series for Amazon Prime Video, but the extent of the streaming service's plans for this franchise have now been revealed.

The Hollywood Reporter (via ActioNewz.com) reveals that Amazon has teamed up with Dmitri M. Johnson’s dj2 Entertainment for a massive rights deal that will see them team up to develop the aforementioned TV show, a movie, and at least one video game (announced last December, but thought to be the first of many), all of which will be part of a connected Tomb Raider world.

The plan is to create an MCU-style franchise, and all signs point to this being a property Amazon is taking seriously. We're assuming the same actress would play Lara Croft across all three projects, though that TV series may end up being a spin-off based on another character for all we know at this stage.

One source tells the trade that this deal is "among the largest commitments at Amazon after Lord of the Rings." Bear in mind they spent $250 million on the rights to that alone, so such a significant financial investment certainly seems to suggest Tomb Raider will soon have a massive presence on Prime Video.

Interestingly, while Waller-Bridge is writing the Tomb Raider TV series, she isn't involved with either the movie or video game. The No Time to Die scribe is, however, said to be a big fan of the property and was eager to be part of this untitled show.

If you want an idea of what to expect from this new era of Tomb Raider storytelling, Netflix's anime TV series might be a good place to begin. While it was developed by a different creative team, Johnson’s dj2 Entertainment was responsible for putting the deal together for that.

For the time being, there's no word on who will play Lara Croft in this live-action reboot. Vikander starred in that disappointing reboot, following in the footsteps of Angelina Jolie. In the games, Camilla Luddington, Keeley Hawes, and Minnie Driver have all lent their voices to the iconic character, as did Hayley Atwell in an anime series on Netflix.

Hopefully, we'll have more details to share soon. In the meantime, share your thoughts on this news in the comments section.

How the hell can you make an MCU stlye series with only one property? That's called sequels buddy.

@Razorface1 - Thank you! Was about to say something similar. It's ridiculous to even describe this venture as such, but hey, Josh is gonna Josh as always. My eyes roll when he (and others on here) put 'verse' after a property's name when in fact they are just sequels and trilogies.

I do want a new Tomb Raider movie, I don't want a universe full of Spin-Offs and "YES" I want Dan Trachtenberg to direct it.

Corporate greed always finds a way to [frick] things up. It's one or the other. Tomb Raider doesn't need both.

Tomb Raider had a Netflix Anime?

@WruceBayne - no. This article (and the previous one) make it look like it has been released, but that isn't the case yet.

OT:

Okay, I've never been a big anime/manga fan although, over the years, I've tried but the other night, on YouTube, I came across something called "Space Battleship Yamato: Resurrection"!

In the words of Ryan George, "Wow wow wow wow...wow!"

I know to a good number of you on here that I'm just preaching to the choir when I say that was such a good movie! It had great pacing & the voice acting was excellent! What a wonderful treat to find!

Sorry for the interruption!

You don’t need a Lara Croft cinematic universe. A good tv show or movie will do. Preferably tv show

@MarioT1000 - Oh I totally agree,if she is a stunner with big breasts and a tight T-shirt and has to have a shower after every adventure, I'd watch it.

But knowing Amazon it'll be a faithful adaption of the source material just like Rings Of Power.

"Vikander starred in that disappointing reboot"

Who says it was disappointing?
Sabre81
Sabre81 - 1/30/2023, 4:43 AM
@dagenspear - Yeah, wasn't disappointing, but I think he means financially as it only did $275m at the Box Office which didn't lead to sequels.

Chuck420Taylor
Chuck420Taylor - 1/30/2023, 2:40 PM
@Sabre81 - even saying that is disingenuous. The studio wanted to make a sequel.
Sabre81
Sabre81 - 1/30/2023, 2:59 PM
@Chuck420Taylor - I think you used that word wrong as I simply suggested a possibility for what happened and not a reason. Did they want to make a sequel? I would have been so down for that. Just studio's decisions at the end of the day.
Chuck420Taylor
Chuck420Taylor - 1/30/2023, 3:18 PM
@Sabre81 - The movie wasn't put into production fast enough so they lost the rights. I wasn't saying you were lying. The studio wanted to make a sequel just wasn't high on their priority list.
Sabre81
Sabre81 - 1/30/2023, 3:48 PM
@Chuck420Taylor - Never really thought you accused me of lying, or even thought I was. Actually genuinely was asking questions. Just putting my best guess forward to why a sequel wasn't made. Which is why good conversation and knowledge is shared. This is good.

Are you right thought?

@Sabre81 - I was preferring more from her version, similarly.
Chuck420Taylor
Chuck420Taylor - 1/30/2023, 9:10 PM
@Sabre81 - agreed. With most things we just have internet rumblings to go by. Rumors were the sequel was only a couple weeks from cameras rolling before they lost the license. If that is true then they kinda of deserved it.
Sabre81
Sabre81 - 1/30/2023, 11:16 PM

There aren't many characters in the Tomb Raider lore that are strong enough to hold a movie on their own. Maybe Werner Von Croy but even then what would be the purpose? Tomb Raider I think is one of those franchises that would flourish as a show.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 1/30/2023, 4:00 AM
Calling it an MCU-style franchise makes it sound a lot bigger than it actually is. A game, a movie, a tv show, and probably an anime isn't that big.

That said, I'm glad they're going this direction. Always thought a multi-media Tomb Raider project would be interesting. Especially if they get Hayley Atwell as Lara Croft.

They always choose the weirdest franchise to make into a cinematic universe.
TheVandalore
TheVandalore - 1/30/2023, 6:27 AM
Green crop top, brown booty shorts, Morpheous glasses, gun holsters, hiking boots and a long tight ponytail. That's the only outfit I wanna see her in. And she better have healthy jugs, let's be real. But don't sexualize the character, treat her as respectfully as Henry Jones Jr. Don't make it cheesy, and make Lara kick ass.

Simple.

If you can't make that work, don't make Tomb Raider anything. Because that is Tomb Raider.
