TOMB RAIDER Is Also Getting A Movie As Amazon Plots An MCU-Style Slate Of Lara Croft Projects

Following the news that Phoebe Waller-Bridge (No Time to Die) is penning a Tomb Raider TV series for Prime Video, it's now been confirmed that Amazon is also developing a movie. Read on for details...

Phoebe Waller-Bridge is currently developing a Tomb Raider TV series for Amazon Prime Video, but the extent of the streaming service's plans for this franchise have now been revealed.

The Hollywood Reporter (via ActioNewz.com) reveals that Amazon has teamed up with Dmitri M. Johnson’s dj2 Entertainment for a massive rights deal that will see them team up to develop the aforementioned TV show, a movie, and at least one video game (announced last December, but thought to be the first of many), all of which will be part of a connected Tomb Raider world.

The plan is to create an MCU-style franchise, and all signs point to this being a property Amazon is taking seriously. We're assuming the same actress would play Lara Croft across all three projects, though that TV series may end up being a spin-off based on another character for all we know at this stage.

One source tells the trade that this deal is "among the largest commitments at Amazon after Lord of the Rings." Bear in mind they spent $250 million on the rights to that alone, so such a significant financial investment certainly seems to suggest Tomb Raider will soon have a massive presence on Prime Video.

Interestingly, while Waller-Bridge is writing the Tomb Raider TV series, she isn't involved with either the movie or video game. The No Time to Die scribe is, however, said to be a big fan of the property and was eager to be part of this untitled show.

If you want an idea of what to expect from this new era of Tomb Raider storytelling, Netflix's anime TV series might be a good place to begin. While it was developed by a different creative team, Johnson’s dj2 Entertainment was responsible for putting the deal together for that.

For the time being, there's no word on who will play Lara Croft in this live-action reboot. Vikander starred in that disappointing reboot, following in the footsteps of Angelina Jolie. In the games, Camilla Luddington, Keeley Hawes, and Minnie Driver have all lent their voices to the iconic character, as did Hayley Atwell in an anime series on Netflix.

Hopefully, we'll have more details to share soon. In the meantime, share your thoughts on this news in the comments section.

We haven't learned about creating a universe before we know if it's successful yet huh?

I do want a new Tomb Raider movie, I don't want a universe full of Spin-Offs and "YES" I want Dan Trachtenberg to direct it.

Corporate greed always finds a way to [frick] things up. It's one or the other. Tomb Raider doesn't need both.

Tomb Raider had a Netflix Anime?

@WruceBayne - no. This article (and the previous one) make it look like it has been released, but that isn't the case yet.

OT:

Okay, I've never been a big anime/manga fan although, over the years, I've tried but the other night, on YouTube, I came across something called "Space Battleship Yamato: Resurrection"!

In the words of Ryan George, "Wow wow wow wow...wow!"

I know to a good number of you on here that I'm just preaching to the choir when I say that was such a good movie! It had great pacing & the voice acting was excellent! What a wonderful treat to find!

Sorry for the interruption!

You don’t need a Lara Croft cinematic universe. A good tv show or movie will do. Preferably tv show

@MarioT1000 - Oh I totally agree,if she is a stunner with big breasts and a tight T-shirt and has to have a shower after every adventure, I'd watch it.

But knowing Amazon it'll be a faithful adaption of the source material just like Rings Of Power.

The next movie will be titled Lara Croft 5: How to dump a couple hundred million down the drain.

There aren't many characters in the Tomb Raider lore that are strong enough to hold a movie on their own. Maybe Werner Von Croy but even then what would be the purpose? Tomb Raider I think is one of those franchises that would flourish as a show.

Calling it an MCU-style franchise makes it sound a lot bigger than it actually is. A game, a movie, a tv show, and probably an anime isn't that big.

That said, I'm glad they're going this direction. Always thought a multi-media Tomb Raider project would be interesting. Especially if they get Hayley Atwell as Lara Croft.

They always choose the weirdest franchise to make into a cinematic universe.

Green crop top, brown booty shorts, Morpheous glasses, gun holsters, hiking boots and a long tight ponytail. That's the only outfit I wanna see her in. And she better have healthy jugs, let's be real. But don't sexualize the character, treat her as respectfully as Henry Jones Jr. Don't make it cheesy, and make Lara kick ass.

Simple.

If you can't make that work, don't make Tomb Raider anything. Because that is Tomb Raider.
