AVATAR Director James Cameron Calls WONDER WOMAN A Step Backwards For Female Representation On Screen
When asked about his thoughts on Wonder Woman, Avatar director James Cameron said that he believes the film's praise is misguided, and is a step-back for female representation on the silver screen.
Many have applauded Wonder Woman for its portrayal of a strong, action oriented female character that women and little girls can look up to when they go see the film intheaters. However, it would seem not everyone shares the same sentiments.
Speaking with The Guardian about the re-release of Terminator 2: Judgment Day in 3D, director James Cameron was asked what he thought about the excitement over Wonder Woman. Not mincing words, Cameron said that he believes that the film actually takes women's representation on the big screen a step back. He even went so far as to call the character an, "objectified Icon."
“All of the self-congratulatory back-patting Hollywood’s been doing over Wonder Woman has been so misguided. She’s an objectified icon, and it’s just male Hollywood doing the same old thing! I’m not saying I didn’t like the movie but, to me, it’s a step backwards. Sarah Connor was not a beauty icon. She was strong, she was troubled, she was a terrible mother, and she earned the respect of the audience through pure grit. And to me, [the benefit of characters like Sarah] is so obvious. I mean, half the audience is female!”
