Jessica Chastain And Simon Kinberg Shed Some Light On X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX's Mysterious Shapeshifting Villain

We all thought that Jessica Chastain had been cast as Lilandra in X-Men: Dark Phoenix, but she's actually a shapeshifting villain. Now, both she and director Simon Kinberg shed some light on the character.

In what may very well be a race to get to the Skrulls before Marvel Studios do in Captain Marvel, the lead villain of X-Men: Dark Phoenix will be a shapeshifting alien played by Jessica Chastain. The character's name hasn't been revealed and even the actress says that, "I don’t know what I can describe about this character without giving everything away." So, what will she be up to here?

"Her character is
way way smarter than we are," says director Simon Kinberg. "What she realizes is she can use [Jean Grey] to manipulate this world, to turn it against itself." For Chastain, the biggest draw was getting to play someone unlike those we've seen in other superhero movies. "I was really excited for him to have his directorial debut and also it was the script. I’ve always wanted to do a big comic book franchise-y film but I had some issues with the female characters in the films I was being offered. I was really pleased with this script because I think it’s a departure from the norm."
Her plan doesn't exactly sound like anything we haven't seen before but the signs do seem to be pointing to a very unique performance from the actress when she takes on the role of this alien.

"Simon and I first sat down in Montreal and we were talking about the character and I said ‘I don’t know if this is right but I keep thinking of the vet who tells
you you need to put your dog down. There’s something very clinical about it.’ He loved it and we kind of expanded the character from there." Who do you think she could be playing in X-Men: Dark Phoenix? Sound off down below.

I wondered who she would have been offered or at least approached about?

Seems like he just took the script from xmen 3 and changed a couple things. I don’t think it will be any better than Apocalypse or X3

@slickrickdesigns - it sound like her species (skrulls, Shiar or whatever) is attempting to invade Earth, and realises the Pheonix is a valid way to distract the, and achieve the goal.

It lines up with it he basic aspects of the comic story, with the hellfire club wanting to manipulate Jean for their own gains.

@slickrickdesigns - Yea, that is what I thought too. Change a few details but same thing as X3. They did slap this together fairly quickly.

The DCEU should take note: just because a franchise peaks on the second movie, and the third is received abysmally, doesn't mean you can't make a worse and less successful fourth movie. Justice league 2: The Who cares-ening.
