Which 'X-MEN' Team Moves Forward In A Sequel To 'DAYS OF FUTURE PAST'?

A producer on both "The Wolverine" and "X-Men: Days of Future Past" was on hand at the former's UK premiere to confirm that Wolverine is in "Days of Future Past" from start to finish. He also addressed whether the original team or "First Class" moves forward in a potential sequel.

Red Carpet News TV· caught up with "The Wolverine" and "X-Men: Days of Future Past" producer Hutch Parker at the UK premiere for "The Wolverine" and asked just how much of Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) will fans be seeing in "Days of Future Past." His reply was short but very telling, stating, "He's in it from stem to stern."

Another interesting topic broached was the question of which group of actors moves forward in a potential sequel, the original 2000 "X-Men" cast or 2011's "X-Men: First Class" ensemble? Said Parker, "I think what's exciting is that it can be both. I think the nature of this project is that they intersect and the legacy can be unique and different for both casts, together and separately. There's a tremendous amount of opportunity that comes out of it." Perhaps the two groups each go their separate ways for further installments separately then come back together again for another time-travel piece? That strategy works for Marvel, right?





"Days of Future Past" is a popular storyline in the Marvel Comics comic book The Uncanny X-Men issues #141 and #142, published in 1981. It deals with a dystopian alternative future in which mutants are incarcerated in internment camps. An adult Kate Pryde transfers her mind into her younger self, the present-day Kitty Pryde, who brings the X-Men to prevent a fatal moment in history which triggers anti-mutant hysteria.

The upcoming sequel to X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men: First Class is officially titled X-Men: Days of Future Past and will be directed by Bryan Singer, director of the first two X-Men films. Several actors from the past of the franchise are confirmed to return, including Hugh Jackman (Wolverine), Halle Berry (Storm), Ian McKellen (Magneto), Patrick Stewart (Professor X), Anna Paquin (Rogue), Shawn Ashmore (Iceman), Ellen Page (Shadowcat), Daniel Cudmore (Colossus), Michael Fassbender (Magneto), Nicholas Hoult (Beast), Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique), and James McAvoy (Professor X). Newcomers Peter Dinklage (Trask) and Omar Sy (Bishop) have also joined the cast along with Fan Bingbing (Blink), Booboo Stewart (Warpath) and Evan Peters(Quicksilver)."

Actually, only the first class team could move forward in the sequel, plot-wise, because of the changes in time their actions in their present (the other team's past) would cause in their future.

probably the shitstorm that dofp sounds like it will be. i loved x one and two and first class each in it's own way but lets face it there are worries to be had about the amount of characters and the amount of shit to be had with shoving this much in one film. dofp should have been a three movie affair...it would be like doing civil war in one movie it just cannot be great...possible and even slightly enjoyable but a cluster[frick] none the less

@mindriot Exactly! Don't keep bitching about stupid stuff and just don't see the movie. Personally, I can't wait as I was just a wee child when the first X-men movie came out. People forget, but this helped revolutionize comic book movies today. This is a very nostalgic moment for many of us X-men fans.

After Days Of Future Past, I really want to finally see a proper X-Men 4, even if they don't title it that. If Singer's worth his salt, Cyclops' death will be retconned in Days Of Future Past, and the Professor and he will be alive and well in X-Men 4. I hope Cyclops will then be portrayed as the badass leader we all know he is capable of being, but wasn't allowed to be by Singer in the first 3 films. There needs to be at least two more movies with the modern day X-Men facing Mr. Sinister and Apocalypse respectively. Hell, Apocalyspe could potentially call for another First Class/Modern Day crossover. Because I know they'll continue with First Class, they're not gonna give up the starpower of Fassbender, McAvoy, and Jennifer Lawrence for anything, nor do I think they should.

@Franshu If they change the events of the future cast then it gives them their reset event like in Star Trek which could allow all the events of the first 3 movies to be erased. The cast could move forward in the alternate timeline.

If they had stayed closer to the source material in the first place, X-Men movies would have been bigger than The Avengers for years now...

Since they announced this film I assumed that it would end up creating two timelines:

*The First Class team could have more sequels and introduce younger versions of Scott and Jean, with McAvoy and Fassbender taking a step back and being less involved in the action .I don't see any of them coming back for a main role for a fourth film but a supporting role, like Sam Jackson in the MCU, could work. Also, DOFP could free them of the constraints of the original trilogy events.

*The Future team could have more futuristic/Apocalyptic stories. Establish first that the timelines are now separate and won't really affect each other (in order to, for example, introduce prototype sentinels in First Class without creating inconsistencies with this timeline). And then maybe reshape the future to bring back Scott and/or Jean and only delay the inevitable. Apocalypse could appear in any of the timelines, but I see him more as a villain for the older team. Cable could feature too.

I say just reboot the franchise just as FOX is doing with the Fantastic Four. That way, it's a fresh start for both and will be able to coincide more within the universe. Not to mention, we won't have to have that horrible continuity that we have now. (ex. Emma in Wolverine Origins, and THEN in First Class. Smh).

They can start fresh and hopefully not make anymore careless mess ups again. Then again...this is FOX.

I'm very interested to see how DOFP turns out. It will be the very first Fox X-Men movie, or any Fox Marvel movie, produced without the input of Tom Rothman. Rothman was the president and later Chairman/CEO of Fox since 1996. He was notorious for interfering creatively with all Fox movies from that point and even taking over production after dismissing directors on occasion. He is widely held responsible for the poor decisions that have been made during the X-Men franchise, especially The Last Stand and Origins, as well as the Die Hard series, Hitman, LXG and others.

He's almost single-handedly the reason Fox developed a notoriously bad reputation regarding genre movie-making, most notably in regards to superhero franchises. Before he took over, Fox had built a good reputation by distributing or producing franchises like Star Wars, Alien, Predator and Die Hard, among others. But once Riothman took over, their reputation eventually went to hell.

He finally resigned last year and exited the company in January, before DOFP went into production. So, I'm looking forward to seeing how things change with him no longer there. How X-Men and other movies fare from this point on. If Fox can repair 16 years of damage to their reputation and their franchises.

I'm anticipating DOFP being the most creative entry in the franchise. Hopefully.
