Things I would like to see in The Wolverine

This is part one of a series of articles I'll be making concerning the X-Men franchise. As suggested in the title, this one involves The Wolverine. Keep the comments tame, please.

First of all, I'd like to open and say (for those who don't know) that I really enjoyed X-Men Origins: Wolverine. It had its script flaws and then some, but I found it to be entertaining enough. It did the origin story well and the action was excellent, IMO.

Anyways, let's get to the main article:

1. The violence

One of the drawbacks I had with Wolverine was its lack of blood...like, Wolverine would stab someone, but you would see very little blood (if any). Wolverine is a very aggressive character, and I'd like to see more blood/gore in The Wolverine. I very rarely watch R-rated movies, but if they need it to be R to tell the story well, then I'm for it. The director wanted to make an R Batman movie, so I imagine he'll make The Wolverine R. I'd like the violence to be reminiscent of X-Men Origins Wolverine: Uncaged Edition, with movies like claws-in-head, blood splattered all over the place, and then some.

2. The suit

I would like to see Wolverine don a costume similar to the yellow one he wore in the comics, minus the mask. Have the stripes in the usual place, but change it up some to modernize it. I don't think blue gloves are necessary...but keep a blue belt.

3. The plot

Open up with how Wolverine came to Japan to begin with. I'm aware that an after-credits scene showed Wolverine at a bar in Japan, possibly teasing The Wolverine. Explain why he travels to Japan (although we all know that it'll be to train there...but not every single person who goes to see it will likely know that unless they read the plot ahead of time). If they bring Sabretooth back, explain why they're enemies again after they became friends again at the end of Origins.

4. The villains

What better time to introduce the Silver Samurai than now? I'd like to see a Batman/Ra's al Ghul type relationship here with Wolverine and Silver Samurai...have SS train Wolverine and later in the movie, engage in epic battles.

5. The tone

With the gory elements, the tone is supposed to be very dark. Make it so dark, it'll make Origins seem like Spider-Man in comparison.

6. The script

Don't pack in with almost all action (unlike Origins). Include plenty of room to breathe, but at the same time have plenty of bloody action. Ala, have the balance that movies like The Dark Knight had. Also, include some of the character's outcomes (like Stryker, Deadpool, etc) without them actually being in the movie, just so people who remember Origins will know what happened to the characters.

7. The soundtrack

For the slower moments, include an Oriental score. (duh...it's Japan. Whaddya expect?) But include heavier rock instrumentals for the graphic action scenes (ala, Disturbed or Breaking Benjamin), and for the final battle sequence, include a dark score (something paying tribute to Hans Zimmer).

Well, those are a few things I'd wanna see in The Wolverine. Guess we'll see how violent (and good) it will be sometime next year.

silver samurai train wolverine WTF? the guys hate the frick out of each other, the dudes not a sensi type he's as impulsive and agressive as wolverine if not more, well a hate/love relationship but I don't think silver samurai should be changed so much. By the way the wolverines not a sequel to origins. But besides that I agree with rest of your points

@Exiles Sorry about that...I'm not very familiar with Silver Samurai. And I know it's not supposed to be a sequel...but since Hugh Jackman will be back in the title role, most people will conclude that it is a sequel to Origins, sooo..

1) I wouldn't mind gore, but they don't need blood to tell the story.
2) Hoiw about turning his suit into samurai armour. I think Wolverine's suit might be the easiest superhero costume to do that with. Plus, it fits with the setting.
3)Yeah, they should make it like a journey that Wolverine goes on.
4) Silver Samurai would be cool.
5)Darker would be better for Wolverine, but if they need gore to do that then their is a case of bad writting.
6) I agree, action movies sometimes suffer from too much action. XMOW had this problem.
7) I have nothing to add or say about that one other than I agree.
Good list, though.

@grif EXACTLY WHAT I WANNA SEE. I'd like the intro to be very similar to that of the Wolverine game, before it goes directly into Wolverine's journey to Japan.
@golden123 I agree, blood isn't exactly vital to tell a story...but sometimes it can be relevant, to show Wolverine's true nature. And I don't think the gore is what makes it darker...it can help, but at the same time there's other things that can show a dark tone.

You may have liked "Origins" but the majority of people don't so im pretty sure you wont be seeing any references to that movie just because Hugh Jackman is in it again.

During an interview, when the interviewer called the movie Wolverine 2, Darren Aronofsky immediately corrected him saying this is a stand alone film.
I think a director of his caliber wants to keep his movie as far away from "Origins" as possible.

Paul, I think you are forgetting that the director has already stated that The Wolverine will have next to nothing to do with X Men Origins.

So there won't be any references to it.

@MovieMann and thesymbiote I do know that it's not supposed to be a sequel. But I'm pretty sure that the average movie goer would conclude, without research, that it is a sequel, just by seeing the fact that Hugh Jackman is Wolverine again. So questions about characters in Origins are inevitably gonna come up...unless everyone does their homework and see it's not a sequel.
And I honestly think, on a side note, that they don't wanna make it a sequel because they knew everyone hated Origins, so making it sound like a stand-alone should garner more interest.

you can forget about the blood. if you want blood, play the videogame grif keeps posting. and i don't think the suit will make it to the screen.

I don't know how they get off saying this won't be a sequel. Maybe because it won't reference Origins. But thats because Wolverine doesn't REMEMBER ORIGINS. other than that, the scene at the end of origins showed him in Japan. And now this one is in Japan. Its still the same character, and its still taking place after Origins.

So, how is it not a sequel again?
PaulRom
PaulRom - 2/21/2011, 12:39 PM
@Denn1s I don't think a live action movie can do the blood as well as the game, but I'd like to see it translated anyways.
@CorndogBurglar That's what I wanna know. It seems too much like a sequel, but they're making it look like it's not.

wolverine's visited japan several times, the dude even had fricking kid there which obviously is not going to be touched upon, but what I am trying to say is that just because he ended up in Japan end of Origins don't mean crap the guys been there loads of times. Plus clarmonts wolverine storyline took place AFTER he joined the X-Men so this could easily take place after X3 if they wanted it

1. 1. The violence - I agree 100%
2. The suit - Needs brown and yellow suit with mask
3.The plot - what you put is not even close to the plot of Chris Claremont's book the movie is going to be based on
4.The villains - Silver Samurai is Mariko brother. So there is a chance we will see him in this. But not like you said because that goes away from Chris Claremont's book's story.
5. The tone - I agree 100%
6. The script - I agree with you with the exception of the mentioning X-Men Origins characters.
7. The soundtrack - I agree
