Regardless of mixed reviews, the financial success of last year's X-Men Origins: Wolverine guaranteed a sequel. The project, which star Hugh Jackman has slowly been hyping, has entered the next stage of production.

ShowBiz411 has just reported that scribe Christopher McQuarrie (X-Men, Valkyrie) has completed a first draft of the script. The site's source revealed a few details pertaining to the film's direction:

"The script is a little different than originally thought. [It's] based on a story cycle by Frank Miller and Chris Claremont. Wolverine’s adventures in martial arts will be a love story featuring a Japanese actress, I am told.

'It’s a beautiful story,' says a source, 'and will be very different than the first film.'"

They went on to say that the production is slated to begin filming in January, 2011. Though Hugh Jackman is the only actor presently attached to the film, Liev Schreiber, who portrayed Logan's brother and nemesis Victor/Sabertooth in the first X-Men spin-off, has recently expressed interest in returning. Whether his character is written into the script has yet to be revealed.

No director is currently attached to the project.

I hope this is better than the Origins. Less characters. Just because they did the X-Men films already doesn't mean they have to be included. I want a solid Wolverine movie.

Great find @MULTI

The Japan story is awesome, I hope they don't screw this one up. Is Gavin Hood returning to direct?

Omega Red would be amazing cgi'd, if only they cgi'd exactly to the comic book.

only problem i see is if they call it x-men origins:wolverine two.
his origin story was told in the first pic, which was ok aside from the adamantium bullet schtick, and well alot of other things too, but it was ok nonetheless.
we have already seen the "origin", so to slap that onto the title would kinda not make sense.
granted, after awakening with amnesia hes kinda starting a fresh life as it were, the japan saga thank god, but weve already seen where he came from.
still get rid of the x-men origins title and just call it wolverine. like the comic.

lol maybe it will gain more stamps of approval from more fan boys.

I liked Origins. It was different

Decent or not. It doesn't matter if this movie is a masterpiece, as long as Hugh Jackman keeps playing Wolverine he is preventing the chance of a truely epic X-Men movie universe. Singer and Hugh have given the goods but it's time for it to be done properly!

Labeling it a love story worries me, I know there is a love aspect to the japanese story but when Hollywood types label something a love story...eek

If they do it right it will be great! :)

...oh, who am I [frick]ing kidding!? This is Fox!!! They'll cram it full with cameos of character who shouldnt be there that will screw up future movies continuity (read: Gambit) and generally just handle the whole thing badly! (read: Deadpool) It still pissed me off that they made Emma Frost American - the UK has few enough superheroes as it is, lol!

Pass.

@ Perrigren yea hopefully not... i don't think focusing too much on the love aspect would go over all that well...

I'm glad that they are taking another swing at this thing, maybe they will even get it right this time. I am forever optimistic when it comes to X-men franchises.

ok first of all great news i love the x-men out of all of the hero films, then hulk, ironman and hopefully the avengers.and in that picture at the top of the page hugh looks a little sick, and pale. now as long as they cut down on action and place good action carefully, and no cheesy lines and comedy. also silver samuria is a must, and they need to explain sabretoothe-victor creed turning into sabretoothe and following wolverine and joining magneto. also a build up to face omega red. maybe stryker is hunting all of his mutants he lost down, and has transformed victor, and has brought omega red along, and sauron. anyways good news and hopefuuly singers first class will be the sentinel story or a lead up to it because it is the best story in the x-men comics period. a wolverine sequel is neaded, first class1,and 2,deadpool,gambit,nightcrawler,generation-x,new mutants with beak, and angel salvador, and the rest,district-x,and x-men 4 ,and 5 back to back all of these would be awesome films if the focus was on story, characters, and plot. and hopefully we will get to see them. also apocalypse, and sinister should be in first class, but great news gotta love the x-men films no matter.x-4 needs to bring back cyclops, wolverine, iceman, rogue, storm, colossus, angel, kitty, gambit, nightcrawler, beast, the professor, and some new characters, they should do it back to back with a fifth film, and singer should do, it could be great.anyways sorry about the rant i just get into the x-men films, and the avengers. so keep the good news coming.

I know it won't happen but I would still love to see this be the opportunity for a Wolverine uniform appearance. I envision him having to put on something that very closely resembles his original outfit and then taking on a group of ninjas.

I know, I know. Its juvenile and will never happen but a guy can dream, can't he?

just please have "Sunfire" in there - its a must- not an absolute must - but a must- have him practicing martial arts using a dragonfire technique which he shows at the end portion of the film - roasting the s#:t out of Logan to the point were all that is showing is his admantium bones - just do it!!!!!

No way they'll put Omega Red in now; he's too thematically close to Whiplash. Russian. Arm whips/tentacles. I hope they keep Lord Shingen, Silver Samurai, Mariko (of course) and I REALLY would love to see Storm in a Mohawk, going all who-gives-a-damn with Yukio! Just not with Halle Berry; they gotta use Jessica White for Storm!
