X-MEN '97: We May Finally Know When Marvel Studios' Animated Series Is Due To Arrive On Disney+

Fans have been anxiously awaiting an update on Marvel Studios' animated revival series, X-Men '97, and we may finally know when the show is set to premiere on Disney+...

We still don't have a trailer (or an officially-released promo image for that matter), but we may finally know when X-Men '97 is set to premiere on Disney+.

The show will serve as both a revival of and sequel to the classic '90s animated series, and is easily one of the most highly-anticipated superhero projects on the horizon.

Originally supposed to premiere last year, a series of release date shake-up (at least partially due to the Hollywood strikes) led to the series being pushed into 2024. No official debut date was ever announced, but thanks to a new report, we might have some idea of when to expect Marvel's mutant heroes to return to our screens.

According to The Cosmic Circus (who have a pretty good track record when it comes to this kind of thing) Marvel Studios has set a spring release window, and X-Men ’97's 10-episode first season is expected to premiere in mid to late March.

This is just a rumor for now, but if the series really is due to arrive just a few weeks from now, an official announcement shouldn't be too far off.

The titles for all 10 episodes were recently revealed, and while they don't appear to give too much away at first glance, some of them definitely offer hints at what the episodes in question could focus on, and those familiar with the X-Men's comic book history are sure to pick up on a few things.

For that reason, potential spoilers follow.

E1: To Me, My X-Men

E2: Mutant Liberation Begins

E3: Fire Made Flesh

E4: Motendo

E5: Remember It

E6: Bright Eyes

E7: Shine With Strength Reborn

E8: Tolerance is Extinction - Part 1

E9: Tolerance is Extinction - Part 2

E10: Tolerance is Extinction - Part 3

In THR's report on the delays, the series is described as "a spiritual and tonal continuation of the classic 1990s series that aired on Fox," and a "retro love letter to the original." The trade also confirms that plans are in place for a second season.

X-Men '97 will serve as a direct sequel to X-Men: The Animated Series' five-season run, but there's speculation that it may also set up the team's eventual live-action MCU debut (unlikely, but we might get a few hints and/or teases here and there).

Returning voice cast members include Lenore Zann as Rogue, Cal Dodd as Wolverine, Catherine Disher as Jean Grey, George Buza as Beast, Chris Potter as Gambit, Adrian Hough as Nightcrawler, Alison Sealy-Smith as Storm, Christopher Britton as Mister Sinister, and Alyson Court as Jubilee.

The official synopsis reads: "Storm and Wolverine try to continue the X-Men. Magneto comes in and wants to step up for Charles Xavier. [Mister] Sinister comes in to try to end the X-Men once and for all."

Y'all think they're going to drop all 10 on the release date or at the very least, the first 2 episodes?

"We Finally Know." (oh, wait, this is a rumor article...need to edit) "we MAY finally know..."

Spring time. Seriously. that's not a concrete date and it is something that we all know already.

One of the greatest things about the '90s X-Men show is how it adapted the comics.

Just going by these episode titles, I don't think this show is going to be the same kind of thing.

@ObserverIO - They pulled heavily from the Claremont and Lee runs, largely believed to be some of the best runs of the comic series ever. There are many more stories to adapt from that era, but knowing modern writers, they are likely to think they can do better and just do their own thing.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 1/31/2024, 9:32 AM
@mountainman - Very probably.

Just looking at the last three 'Tolerance is Extinction' parts 1-3. That may be a loose adaptation of X-Tinction Agenda. But if this were the '90s show, it would be called 'X-Tinction Agenda' and it would probably be longer than three episodes and would be a much more faithful adaptation, changing things merely to fit into the continuity of the show.

@ObserverIO - Season 1 had set up Genosha, and they really never revisited it. I would love an X-Tinction Agenda adaptation as that was the first crossover that I ever collected and read.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 1/31/2024, 9:50 AM
@mountainman - They set it up pretty nicely. I suppose if X-Men '97 does their own version of it, that'd be better than nothing.
mountainman
mountainman - 1/31/2024, 10:15 AM
@ObserverIO - It seems as if Inferno could be in the works with Madeline Pryor in it.

If be ok leaning into that whole storyline.

The old show explored in depth Sinister’s interest in Scott and Jean. Plus Cable was a major player. Give us Inferno. Give us Cable’s origin. Give us X-Tinction Agenda. In later seasons, give us Age of Apocalypse and Onslaught.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 1/31/2024, 10:36 AM
@mountainman - Strangely enough, Age of Apocalypse was actually inspired by the episodes 'One Man's Worth' parts 1 and 2 rather than the other way around, so it'd be neat to see that storyline come full circle and be readapted into the cartoon.

@ObserverIO - Interesting I didn’t know that. One of the other cartoons, don’t remember if it was X-Men Evolution or Wolverine and the X-Men teased Age of Apocalypse but never adapted it. Those two shows were fine but nowhere near as good as the OG.

@ObserverIO - ive always imagined how a true comic animated adaptation for marvel/dc titles would look like. Japan is doing it successfully with manga to anime. Panel by panel with minor addition for filler

Of course it is since I just canceled my Disney+ cause there’s nothing to constantly watch on there. All the series are super short and underwhelming.

Will probably be the most accurate take on The X-Men coming from Disney.
When Disney Marvel make The X-Men, I have a feeling that people will miss the Fox movies.
