Mystique-haters are going to have even more ammunition after this new X-Men: Apocalypse featurette. Some fans have a big problem with the fact that Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) has been positioned as one of the main characters in the franchise, and is seen to be leading the team in this latest installment.

Well, it seems the character has also been set up as an almost messianic, mythical hero to mutantkind, which is why she's chosen to whip the younger team members into fighting shape.

Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshipped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel's X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender), to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) with the help of Professor X (James McAvoy) must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction.

X-Men: Apocalypse hits theaters on May 18.

In all seriousness though, I figured this was a given...especially since she made international news and all that in DOFP

@MattBellissimo - Yeah I knew they saw her as this great hero, but I'm starting to think she's going to be like this mythical mutant savior now... which is a bit silly.

@RorMachine - Yup, little strange to say the least...but it makes sense now why Nightcrawler says "you're her!"

@MattBellissimo - I don't know why this never clicked before, but let me see if I've got this straight: Mystique, not wanting to be recognized by others as a mutant savior, takes on her human form so people won't recognize her. And yet, when she rescues Nightcrawler in her human form *an entire continent away*... he recognizes her. Why even take on her human form if people are gonna recognize that too???

@WeaponXCII - Mystique takes on human form, so people won't throw up at the sight of her. Nothing more.

@WeaponXCII - Man, I was hoping he was referring to her being his mom, but they probably won't dive into that part of the mythos.

@ALostCause - Yes, that is weird, unless it's the comics blue form.
