AKA Jessica Jones Gets A Writer, May Hit Screens By Next Fall

Although the Hulk show was supposed to hit first, it looks like Jessica Jones will be the first Marvel character to debut on ABC, with Twilight scribe Mellisa Rosenberg on writing detail..

Variety report that AKA Jessica Jones is well on its way to becoming Marvel's first show to air in Fall 2011 on ABC. Apparently Twilight screenwriter Rosenberg has signed on to script the Marvel comics adaptation which will focus on the fairly obscure but popular Jessica Jones.

Formerly the super heroine Jewel, Jones hangs up her tights and instead focuses on a career as a private investigator, but winds up helping out her former super powered pals. Rosenberg says that she was drawn to the character because she is unlike any other female protagonist on tv at the monemt, Flawed, but with a biting sense of humor. That actually sounds like quite a few female leads on tv at the moment but whatever!

Jones was created by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Gaydos for the series Alias, part of Marvel's MAX imprint for mature readers. Its not known if the tv show will have that mature slant, or indeed if Luke Cage(Jones' current beau in the New Avengers comics) will feature. But it would certainly be a great way to link into the rumored Heroes For Hire tv show.

Variety also says that Guillermo del Toro and David Eick are still on course for the Hulk tv show, and reiterate that Cloak And Dagger will most likely follow too.

So who do you guys see playing Jessica Jones then?

Twilight? Oh dear. An Alias TV show would be awesome, but it's connection to Twilight makes me instantly think of it being a teeny Smallville type of thing. Even if it's not, you'd think they could find a better writer! :P

Guys, she had to adapt those screenplays from Stephanie Myers useless garbage books so don't think that its all shes good for. She also wrote a lot of Dexter.

Well this is a pleasant surprise! Looks like it could definitely be interesting, and anything that puts the spotlight on the female Marvel characters is always good.

Rosenberg is a good choice too! I know she wrote about 9 or so episodes of the TV show Dexter as well!

I like the character.Besides her Twilight work, I like the writer from Dexter.

So, does anyone think they'll need to rewrite a lot of her story, as several of the characters in it are involved with other projects or are at other studios?

Any Marvel Show on ABC is a bad thing.
The reason being is that ABC is one of four Networks(ABC, NBC, FOX, and CBS)and being so, they cancel any show that doesn't have really high ratings. That is why Smallville lasted ten years its because its not on any of the main networks.

People have got to stop saying that they should air Marvel Shows on HBO,since Warner brothers owns HBO it is highly unlikely that they will air a Marvel Show.

The overreactions on this site are always a treat.

She wrote Twilight, an adaptation of a shitty book. She also writes for Dexter, one of the most consistently-acclaimed shows on television.

Trust me. She probably knows how to write a crime drama.

I loved Jessica Jones when she was on the MAX imprint. She was insane and bitter and awesome. She solved crime, which is cool.

Then she became Luke Cage's baby momma and she strated showing up in every damn book BMB wrote.

Oh, and
Michelle Monoghan for Jessica Jones!

Im amazed that it could be airing as close as Fall 2011! They must have had these tv show plans for ages!

I wouldnt mind watching a Jessica Jones tv show. I always thought a movie about her would be pointless but a tv show could work, as long as they keep far away from a Smallville vibe for the show. And as you said Ror, it could link into a Heroes for Hire show so well!

My idea is, that this tv show begins airing next Fall, if it is successful, it runs for 5 seasons at the least and 10 seasons at most (if Smallville can do it, anything can!)

Then meanwhile, they can do a big screen Luke Cage movie & Iron Fist movie in 2014 or something. Then introduce the same actor who played Luke Cage on the big screen in Jones' series in the fourth or fifth season and then make a Heroes for Hire spin-off from Jones' series with the actors from the "Cage" and "Fist" movies

Although the one major problem would be if they will or wont include Daredevil or Purple Man because Im guessing they still belong to Fox, so that could be a problem

@tazmaniak
Erm, Ms. Marvel, The Avengers, Scott Lang , Luke Cage are all owned by Marvel & Marvel are doing this tv series so that wouldnt be a problem but your right about the rest, in relation to them, some of her story would have to be re-written

In reference to the other series they are going to make, I would like to see a Cloak & Dagger tv series but Im still completely against a Hulk tv series, I still think its a huge mistake. I do still agree with LEEE, a Punisher series could be amazing if it is done completely right. Better than anymore movie failures

This could work out pretty well for Marvel. Jones has ties to every street level hero there is. She would be a perfect starting point to introduce their other heroes. "SPIN OFFS ANYONE"?

ROR: I was too quick to judge clearly...she wrote Dexter? Then this show will be [frick]ing awesome! :) And to be fair, you are right about her only adapting those books and not being responsible for the crap in them. And thinking about it, Jessica Jones could be very interesting as long as they don't go the "teen" route with her.

I don't know much about Jessica Jones but from the sounds of it this could be a great tv series.

@ Intruder,
If they can afford Julia Styles then that would amazing. Her work in Dexter and the Bourne Trilogy were brilliant.

Quite happy for Alias to hit a TV show, hell it's this kind of book that would suit TV better. Hell even calling it AKA Jessica Jones could work because we cant just call the bloody thing Alias because the people will be like "WHAT!? I THOUGHT THEY CANCELED THAT!?" it'd be like if a new show came out in 4 years called Lost.

However a bit skeptical about the Writer. And when I say skeptical I mean. OH GOD RUN!!!

Wait....she's done a bit of Dexter? Eh not hyped but good on them if they actually make the dam thing!

JackBauer - 12/17/2010, 10:28 AM
Not familiar with the character, I haven't been a die hard CB reader for about ten years, but if the writer is connected to the piece of crap called Dexter, no thanks. That show has some of the worst acting I have ever seen.
niknik
niknik - 12/17/2010, 10:33 AM
Who cares? Seriously. "Jessica who?" is what most comic book fans are saying. Doesn't bode well for an audience if you can't even garner enough of those let alone the mainstream viewer.

What a waste of effort. Who among you wouldn't rather they spent all that time and money developing a series about a more mainstream character that most folks are familiar with? What's next, Brother Vodoo? Paste Pot Pete?

I just can't understand why anyone would be angry about this. You don't like/haven't heard of Jessica Jones? Who gives a shit! Someone does/has. Just because they are making this, doesn't mean they won't make the characters YOU want to see aswell at some point. Personally I have read a few issues of Alias and that's about it, but if done right I think this has potential to be a great show. And yes, some cameos would be nice too.
iconstatic
iconstatic - 12/17/2010, 11:00 AM
@nitnik

That's where you are mistaken. The average audeience doesn't give a shit about most Marvel characters to begin with. If you remember, Blade never sold well at all in comics, but that didn't stop him from having three successful movies.

ManThing
ManThing - 12/17/2010, 11:02 AM
Interesting.

It seems like a weird concept. They aren't doing a show about the heroes. Instead they are doing a show about a friend of the heroes. himmmm

Anyway I'll definitely give this a fair chance, just because it's Marvel.

Meanwhile I can't help but wonder if there will be any nifty cameos and guest stars. Maybe Luke Cage? Iron Fist? Daredevil? Nah.. they can't do DD sadly. But there's a lot of potential.

@Itruder

I understand what you mean, but I think a lot of people are looking at it from a comic book fan perspective. Jones had a very good series called "Alias", which was a piece of neo noir. It had an ex-superheroine as a main character, but it couldn't be farther from standard superhero fare.

It had much more in common with "Bored To Death" or "Law & Order" than it did with "X-Men". People who might not like superheroes might be interested in something like that. There's a sci-fi element, but Jessica was never flying around in spandex and beating up giant robots.

MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 12/17/2010, 11:14 AM
Yes, and those shows are coming..possibly all of em! Just because a character isn't "high profile" doesn't mean they won't be well received, or that it won't be really good. A show focusing on Jones is a good spin to put on the usual super hero story.

@ Rormachine...I'm with you. She's a perfect character to introduce viewers to the Marvel world. Former Superhero turned investigative reporter turned private eye. A good. although unexpected choice. I'm excited!
