First Images From Super

Remember this? Director James Gunn has posted the first images from his low budget urban superhero film, as well as the SDCC panel vids on his blog.

The film stars Rainn Wilson(The Office) as the husband of Liv Tyler who begins an affair with a drug dealer played by Kevin Bacon. He snaps, puts on a costume, and calls himself The Crimson Bolt. He then gains a sidekick in Ellen Page's fruitcake teenager and sets about fighting crime.

Here are quotes from Gunn:

As many of you know, we went to Comic-Con this weekend and showed the first ever footage from SUPER. As reported on nearly every fan site, the crowd ate it up! The panel consisted of me, Rainn Wilson, Ellen Page, Liv Tyler, Nathan Fillion, Michael Rooker, and producers Ted Hope and Miranda Bailey. I was so excited that everyone changed their plans around to make it to the Con after showing them a cut of the film last week. SUPER is a VERY low-budget film made as a labor of love by all involved – as I said at the panel, everyone on the film, from me, to all of the actors, to the composer Tyler Bates, are all working on the film for the lowest amount the guilds allow. Yes, I know, there have been other films that are superficially the same as ours, movies about real people becoming superheroes – including some very good ones. But ours is the first that, although funny, focuses first and foremost on the emotions of the characters involved. It is a dark, gritty, violent, no-hold-barred independent film that is, I promise you, not at all what you expect.

Actually, even with the emotions at eh forefront it does still sound a lot like Defendor, but we'l give ya the benefit of the doubt! Here are the panel vids..

Yeah, I know what you're thinking. How can we take this seriously? I mean how on Earth can we be expected to believe that Rainn Wilson could pull a chick like Liv Tyler?

So is this a serious film with Rainn as the leading man? That could be interesting.

@Shaman...no, you're not alone. I just don't get what people find so funny about him. Which is a much heated debate in my household because my wife thinks he's hilarious!

I have only ever seen him in The Office in which yeah, I think he's pretty damn funny. But the scripts for that show are so good it would be hard for anyone to bomb! I'm not sure I could ever take him seriously as a leading man though. His face looks like it lost a fight with a steam press.

preacher- Oh... my god. I will sacrifice a live goat to save your marriage! I wouldn't wish a Rainn fan wife on my worst enemy. :(

Ror- The show is so funny that it actually MAKES Rainn SEEM funny. Its all on the show. Rainn anywhere else is very assassinatable.

Not really interested in this, I saw him in that one movie about a band or something and was pure crap. Not sure if it was the writing or his acting...maybe both.

Stumblin- Clearly they didn't hire the writers of "The Office" for "The Rocker". They should have named that movie "The Stinker". I hope he's the last mimzy we'll ever get.

These low budget, pseudo comic book, superhero movies haven't done well lately.

Kick Ass, Defendor (remember that?) had great casts and quirky stories and couldn't find audiences. I fear the same fate for Super.

Agreed, MarsAmbassador.

The studios should nix the small projects, and just save their resources to focus on 1-2 big budget, tentpole films to be released each summer.

I'm not sure how I feel about Marvel's plan to release these shorter, B-level superhero films.
