With Brad Bird's Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol being a huge success at the box office last winter (grossing nearly $700M worldwide), Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions have been fast tracking a fifth movie in the long-running action franchise. Now, the film may have a director. According to Deadline, the top choice to helm the latest Mission: Impossible movie is writer/director Christopher McQuarrie, who recently worked with star Tom Cruise on the December 21st release Jack Reacher. While it isn't official yet, McQuarrie is the director that both Cruise and producer J.J. Abrams want for the job.

Recently, McQuarrrie has become a sort of go-to guy for writing Tom Cruise's films, including Valkyrie, uncredited work on Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, and the upcoming All You Need Is Kill. The writer is also set to direct Paramount's Without Remorse, and has also co-written 20th Century Fox's The Wolverine. Paramount and Skydance hope that Jack Reacher would spawn another franchise for Cruise.

Do you think Christopher McQuarrie is a good choice to direct Mission: Impossible 5?

Christopher McQuarrie wrote one of the best scripts of the 90's (The Usual Suspects). McQuarrie received best screenplay awards from numerous entities including the American Academy Awards. It made Bryan Singer (the director) an overnight sensation. The twist ending was the talk of the town. Now, twist ending are done to over kill (see: Nolan).

I love how this franchise has sort of become a showcase for directors Cruise wants to work with.

He is a talented writer but doesn't mean he would make a good director, but you never know.

See Nolan?

Jesus i thought the Nolan haters couldn't wait for the TDK trilogy to end so that everyone would stop talking about it

WHY ARE YOU STILL MENTIONING HIM?

@Cipher
Soze was unexpected awesomeness just like you man.

@E
M. Night came out with his twist ending years after McQuarrie. And, yes, he is another example of a director/writer that thinks that adding a twist ending to every movie makes them clever. Chris McQuarrie fought the studios for years because they wanted him to write another hardboiled tale with a twist ending; he wanted to do other things. He wrote 'The Way of the Gun' as an FU to the movie industry.

@Wonderbread
Nolan does go for twist ending after twist ending that wasn't an insult to his craft (I like Inception and Prestige). However, you said nothing about McQuarrie. This article is about Chris McQuarrie (not Chris Nolan). If you want to compare and contrast that is fine, but … nevermind, I give up.

Mission Impossible four was a shit movie compared to the others. It was like a film version of The Incredibles. I'm glad Bird isn't coming back

Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol was amazing, my only reason to go see it initially was because Bad Robot was producing and Josh Holloway was in the trailer. And I'm so glad I went and saw it. One of the most entertaining and skillfully shot action films I've ever seen. In terms of big blockbuster films this takes the cake for me (of course I haven't seen Skyfall yet as I'm in Australia ): )
As for this new director I'm going to go see Jack Reacher first before I make my decision on whether I like him, I'm happy with Bad Robot on board again and Tom Cruise is at the top of his game so it'll be a good movie I guess. But I'm not sold on a directors past credits, they need to be making good films now so if Recher is good then I'll see MI5 opening weekend.
Also does anyone else hate the name Jack Reacher? Sounds like the name of a gay pornstar to me.

I was hoping Bard Bird would come back to direct M:I5.

He really brought life back in the M:I franchise. Ghost Protocol was such a great action movie!

@mgeoff88 he did a great job with Ghost Protocol but I think he's going to go onto bigger and better things, though it would be great to see a Brad Bird M:I Trilogy.
