The first episode of the live-action Disney+ series Wandavision debuted exactly one year ago today. The series took place directly after the events of Avengers: Endgame and saw Wanda fabricate a reality based on classic sitcoms where she could live a happy life with Vision. Naturally, it didn't last.

The final episode of Wandavision saw Wanda's false world deteriorate along with her synthetic husband. It's this scene in particular that Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) has shared a visual effects breakdown of to commemorate the one year anniversary of the show. ILM pulls the curtain back and provides us with a new look at how this pivotal, climactic scene was brought to life.

It appears that actors Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany filmed the scene in front of a green screen as the camera circled them. The interior and exterior of the house were added in post-production by ILM through the process known as compositing (which is to say they combined multiple shots into one).

The visual effects studio also added the final touches to Vision's appearance, as Bettany was simply painted maroon when they filmed the scene. Rather hilariously, the point at which Vision is supposed to disintegrate, Bettany simply steps out of frame. Additionally, and arguably most impressively, ILM added the stunning and colourful particle effects as Wanda's illusion dissipates.

WandaVision at its peak was a wild time

@BlackBeltJones - it was. While its not my favorite or the best of the D+ series last year, and it didn't fully stick the landing, the buildup towards the finale was crazy and something that the other shows never got close to achieving. There were so many guesses, so many ideas about what would happen, it was indeed a wild time.

Probably the best Marvel Disney+ show, though that isn’t saying much

@Kurban - hate to agree but I do, and yet I feel that it was a cut above

A year already? Feels like three months or so at most.

Anyway, WandaVision probably has the best CGI of the Marvel shows from last year in my opinion. Atleast in the way it was utilized

Also, after three years or so seeing Nebula put up multiple articles in a few days again somehow feels like the Avatar has returned after being absent for a hundred years

Vision was given the show's best lines by far.

"We've said 'good bye' before, so it stands to reason that we'll say 'hello' again."

@DrReedRichards - still applaud the writing team for making him feel more human than most characters.

And whoever came up with that grief line deserves an award

@DrReedRichards - ‘What is grief, if not love persevering?’ staggeringly good writing

@bkmeijer -

His post Civil War era is peak Vision. That's when he struck the perfect balance between robotic pragmatism and humane sentimentality. Felt organic when the writers gave him the famous "grief line around that same time.

The exact line I had in mind, when I said the writers gave him the best ones. Bettany managed to shine in the series, more than I expected him to, and I couldn't be happier.

@DrReedRichards - true. A lot of people want stories during the 5 year period between Infinity War and Endgame, but I think the best stories are in that 2 year period between Civil War and Infinity War.

True, we've seen quite a few stories already and have gotten shows for the characters we didn't see then, but still I wanna see some more of that. And if thats flashbacks like in WandaVision, so be it

@bkmeijer - Black Widow was set in the 2 year period between Civil War and Endgame and it was terrible
bkmeijer2
bkmeijer2 - 1/15/2022, 7:08 PM
@kingjoeg - I liked it, but at no point did it feel like it had to be set in that period. Could easily have been set during another period, as only really a small part dealt with the Civil War fallout
Cap1
Cap1 - 1/15/2022, 7:24 PM
@DrReedRichards - him and Olsen worked wonders together in that season. It did dip in quality I think towards the end, but the dialogue was always exceptional, some of the best 2021 had to offer. The Vision vs. Vision fight not being a fight at all but a moral debate with a Ship of Theseus throughline was a stroke of genius and so so true to the character(s).

As a Greek, watching these two sides of the same character go up against each other through debating Hellenic existentialism made made me all sorts of giddy inside.

Falcon and Winter Soldier still is my favorite (U.S.Agent, Zemo dance, Dora Milija, Agent Carter, Super Soldiers, and Batroc the leaper)..oh and the sad story of the Black super soldier and how he was treated still hits hard when I watched it a second time.

@incredibleTalk - same here. For me it didn't have the same excitement as WandaVision going into it from week to week, but overall I just like it more. Did all the things I wanted it to do.

Marvel really out did themselves.

It was creative, unique and emotional🙍❤

@AmazingFILMporg - To me, the cons were the Bohner joke, Monica's rushed origin and the pacing of the very last episode. Other than that it was a great show with superb episodes that fleshed out both Wanda and Vision.

WandaVision was my second favorite with those great 50's 60's and 70's sitcom references also( Darcy, Agent Woo, Captain Marvel to be, Fox's Quicksilver and Agatha Harkness)...
