THE LEGO MOVIE 2 Director Mike Mitchell Wants To Helm A Marvel/DC Crossover Or PLASTIC MAN - EXCLUSIVE

We recently sat down with The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part director Mike Mitchell to discuss the animated sequel, and in this excerpt from our interview, he talks about his superhero movie ambitions...

With The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part now available on Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital Download, I recently had the opportunity to catch up with director Mike Mitchell (Sky High, Trolls). We discussed a number of topics, including the sequel's surprising cameos, why no Marvel characters appeared in the animated adventure, and Batman's startling new look.

All of that will be available to check out on the site tomorrow.

In the meantime, we wanted to bring you an excerpt from our interview in which the filmmaker reveals whether he would be interested in working on a Marvel or DC Comics adaptation somewhere down the line. As you can see below, he had a couple of suggestions, both of which are pretty awesome.

You're no stranger to superheroes now, so are there any Marvel or DC superheroes you'd like to tackle in a live-action setting somewhere down the line?

Oh yeah, I love superheroes. I did a superhero film years ago, Sky High, and I'm such a fan. It would be great to see a DC and Marvel character in the same film...that would be fantastic. Maybe just cram them all together into one ultimate film! I'm sure it's gonna happen at some point but I couldn't be more happy to work on something like that. It would be fantastic! Plastic Man! They need to make that guy someday. I don't even know if he's DC or Marvel.

He's DC, but now you've said it, we'll get it out there for you - fingers crossed!

Yeah! 'Mike Mitchell, his next film is Plastic Man for DC!' [Laughs]

Given how well he handled The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part (and particularly its superhero characters), it would be amazing to see Mitchell get his hands on a quirky character like Plastic Man. As for that Marvel/DC crossover, while it's still more than likely a long way down the line, the director has proven that he can handle a large ensemble, so here's hoping the two companies take note.

What do you guys think?

The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part comes to Blu-ray, DVD and Digital Download June 3.

Every director and actor now says “I love superheroes” or “I grew up on the comics” . Everyone wants a sip of the gravy train.

Sky High wasn't a bad teenage superhero movie. Definitely captured that John Hughes vibe in a colorful comicy world.

@Kevwebsz - I never hated it myself either. Definately something though as a kid I like waaay more but for a non IP superhero movie it was ok.

@KingCipher - I've never seen the rotten tomatoes for it. I always assumed it was low and I was in a small group who liked the movie, mainly cause it's not talked about that often.

@KingCipher - damn really. My friends growing up were some God damn liars then lol.

@Kevwebsz @MrCamw1 @KingCipher - Funny thing though is that since Disney owns both Sky High and (now) Marvel comics they could easily crossover, or even merge the SH universe with Marvel's.

And SH in some ways, I could see it fit nicely in the Marvel universe. It would just be another school for powered individuals or even sponsored by the Gov/Sheild or some other organization in the MU.

In the MCU it could be formed after the accords... Unless that's no longer in affect after the five year snap ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@Kevwebsz - I'd be down for a Sky High tv show. Would make for a fun show that would be the america version of My Hero Academia (even though SH came out first).

I don't want a DC/Marvel film (who does?). Those are dumb in comic form and would be even dumber on film. To quote David Goyer: "Batman vs. Superman is the movie you make when the studio is completely out of ideas." But hey, at least he was wrong and the 10 year development build-up paid off and that film was great!

@SpideyPuffsMJ - Really? Just which crossovers have you read that fit your definition of dumb?
SpideyPuffsMJ
SpideyPuffsMJ - 6/3/2019, 1:54 PM
@FlixMentallo21 - All? It just feels unnatural and creatively bankrupt. I like having the two distinct worlds and don't like the fourth wall breaking because they have to know of each others' existence. '96's Marvel vs. DC was pretty dumb and I don't take cosmic characters like the Living Tribunal seriously when they use them for dumb story reasons to justify a business move.

@SpideyPuffsMJ - I beg to differ. (Though I personally think Marvel vs. DC could've been better, and I've seen a better execution of the Amalgam Universe in a fan project.)

I really love it when the Big Two actually play nice and let their sandboxes collide for a bit. There are tons of top 10 lists for the best crossovers they've produced, but this is my personal list of favorites:
-1978's Superman vs. The Amazing Spider-Man
-1982's Uncanny X-Men and the New Teen Titans
-1995's Darkseid vs. Galactus: The Hunger
-1996's Batman and Captain America
-1997's Batman and Spider-Man: New Age Dawning
-2003's JLA/Avengers

Those are prime examples of good crossovers between the Big Two. I don't know how one could've soured you on the whole experience, but you sound like you need to take a re-read session. As for the whole separate, distinct worlds thing? When you look at how essentially both crops of characters are the product of over 80+ years of corporate-owned direction and dictation at the expense of (mostly) Golden Age creators' livelihoods, you could practically put them in the same universe.

...wants to do a specific character but doesn't know if said character is DC or Marvel... SIGH... with this level of love and care i would not wish him upon any studio.

@JonC - "Plastic Man! They need to make that guy someday. I don't even know if he's DC or Marvel"

And this is the reason why studios are screwing comic book characters up.

It's essentially the same thing as giving a kid, a drunk, or some blind guy a driver license.

I confused the director with the one that wrote the script for the first Lego, Chris McKay, thinking it was the same person. :P

I liked Sky High too. A Plastic Man movie should have IMO the same heart that Shazam did.
