Detective Pikachu didn't blow the box office up in 2019, but it was definitely a hit, and fans and critics alike responded positively to the first live-action Pokémon movie. Since then, we've not heard anything concrete about future plans for the franchise on the big screen, but Variety has revealed today that a TV series is currently in the works at Netflix.
This will be live-action rather than animated, but as it's in the very early stages of development, we currently have no plot details. It has, however, been confirmed that Lucifer co-showrunner and executive producer Joe Henderson is attached to write and produce the currently untitled project.
Now, many fans will immediately think of following the adventures of Ash, Misty, and Brock in a show like this one, but the world of Pokémon is so huge that it could head in pretty much any direction.
Netflix has become a home for multiple animated TV shows with these Pokémon characters in recent years, and it seems the streamer is now looking to capitalise on the franchise's popularity. The Pokémon Company is extremely protective of its assets, though, so this will hopefully be one of Netflix's better series, as opposed to the ones that are promptly cancelled after a single season!
Henderson's other work includes an upcoming Netflix adaptation of the Shadecraft comic book and TV shows like 11.22.63, Graceland, and White Collar. It might be a while before we have anything concrete to share on this one, but we're definitely excited to try and catch 'em all on TV!
What do you hope to see from this Pokémon series?
