POKEMON Live-Action TV Series In Development At Netflix From LUCIFER Showrunner

Pokemon fans have been waiting a long time for news on a Detective Pikachu sequel, but it's now been revealed that we're getting a live-action series at Netflix! Find more details on that after the jump...

Detective Pikachu didn't blow the box office up in 2019, but it was definitely a hit, and fans and critics alike responded positively to the first live-action Pokémon movie. Since then, we've not heard anything concrete about future plans for the franchise on the big screen, but Variety has revealed today that a TV series is currently in the works at Netflix.

This will be live-action rather than animated, but as it's in the very early stages of development, we currently have no plot details. It has, however, been confirmed that Lucifer co-showrunner and executive producer Joe Henderson is attached to write and produce the currently untitled project.

Now, many fans will immediately think of following the adventures of Ash, Misty, and Brock in a show like this one, but the world of Pokémon is so huge that it could head in pretty much any direction.

Netflix has become a home for multiple animated TV shows with these Pokémon characters in recent years, and it seems the streamer is now looking to capitalise on the franchise's popularity. The Pokémon Company is extremely protective of its assets, though, so this will hopefully be one of Netflix's better series, as opposed to the ones that are promptly cancelled after a single season!

Henderson's other work includes an upcoming Netflix adaptation of the Shadecraft comic book and TV shows like 11.22.63, Graceland, and White Collar. It might be a while before we have anything concrete to share on this one, but we're definitely excited to try and catch 'em all on TV!

What do you hope to see from this Pokémon series?

Anyone remembers the Zelda series that was cancelled the moment its existence was leaked?

@JayBarrick - a live action zelda series? huh, heard the makers of Castlevania want to do a zelda anime

@JayBarrick - I think Nintendo took it back once they realized that the movie didn't have to be live action. Shigeru Miyamoto (creator) is super protective of Zelda ever since the terrible live action Super Mario Bros was made. He has turned down millions of dollars from Hollywood and cancelled projects he thinks will hurt the brand.

Once Nintendo inked a deal with illumiation studio (cgi company that animated Despicable Me & Minions) I think Miyamoto/Nintendo took it back. Rumors said that if Mario does well than Nintendo is going to start allowing more of their ips get 3d animated movies. They are still not ready for live-action.

@mastakilla39 - Smh. They can't have Mario gatekeep the rest. Not all of them are equally adaptable. Zelda is the most adaptable one and should be the litmus test.

@dracula - I mean they'll prob just look like detective Pikachu. I'm sure it will have a decent budget

@dracula - Maybe they'll use practical effects rather than CGI.

This seems less stupid than the live action Avatar TLA and Cowboy Bebop shows, but still...

If we talk about actors, I want Aasif Mandvi on this.

He could be a detective chief inspector investigating a series of robberies committed by Team Rocket.

They should base this off my character in Pokémon yellow or silver. I use to go crazy in those and they’d be lucky to have my characters

@RitoRevolto - Screw the show. The games are the OG stuff, and there pokemon do mostly natural animal sounds.

@Waddles - "In Detective Pikachu they made it work and look good"

Agree to disagree I guess.
