AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON Concept Art Reveals An Ultron Design Joss Whedon Wanted That Kevin Feige Rejected

Some newly revealed Avengers: Age of Ultron concept art spotlights a grounded take on Ultron that Joss Whedon pushed for, but Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige "thankfully" said no to. Check it out...

In 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron, Marvel Studios finally brought the villainous Ultron to the big screen. Played by James Spader, the sarcastic, sentient android was a hit with fans, and he went through a number of different iterations before taking on his final Vibranium-enhanced form.

Now, Marvel concept artist Phil Saunders has shared some early designs for the character which were clearly based heavily on Iron Man and a little more grounded in terms of the tech used.

"Director [Joss] Whedon wanted more 'grounded' tech (read pistons and gears, etc.) than my earlier designs, so we ended up pursuing a direction that was frankly too ‘endoskeleton’ for my taste," he explains. "Thankfully Keven Feige stepped in and steered us toward what made it to the screen, but for a while I got to paint some cool hardware!"

Responding to a comment left by a fan, Saunders talked more about Whedon's hopes for a grounded take on Ultron. "It was a disappointing choice, but not an uncommon one," he explained. "So many directors are obsessed with keeping everything 'grounded,' which always translates to 'if I haven't seen it before, I don't understand it.'"

It doesn't sound like Saunders was the biggest fan of working with Whedon, and we know that Feige also had to step in to stop the filmmaker from introducing Captain Marvel in the 2015 movie.

I liked the version we got in the movie. I liked the movie as well. Spader-tron was bomb.

Ultron is one of the weaker MCU villains IMO. Such a waste for Spader.

@ScreenTime - should have used this as his first body (his main one, not the messed up drone body) then switched to the body he has in the movie before his upgrade, as his upgraded body

Honestly, I don't see how this is more "grounded" than the end product. I struggle to see many differences period.

Spader made him interesting, not necessarily the design so im fine with the final look

The year 2050, we're still getting articles about Ultron concept art.

I know it’s common to hate on Joss right now (for valid reasons), but if this was the design he wanted then I’m not mad at it. It looks pretty cool and would’ve been a nice step in the evolution of Ultron’s forms

@MikeyL - yeah; I remember it took 2 or 3 watches before I realized he had a 3rd form. It honestly looked the same as 2.

@MG0019 - It's because the 3rd form is some kind of Vibranium armor over the 2nd form. Which it's still confusing, since while he had Black Widow hostage, the change was evident, but in the Sokovia battle, you could see the 3rd form was more of a Vibranium shell covering the actual body.

Only the juiced up Ultron at the end looked weird, but any of the designs before that felt very much at place already. Especially his very and last were very cool

OT: why does it feel like I have to scroll past more and more recommended/latest/related headlines every week before finally finding the comments?

I’m Joss Whedon’s biggest fan, based on his TV work and Serenity. But Age of Ultron had so much promise and was so disappointing. There are fantastic elements there but he fell victim to weaknesses he had in all his TV shows. He’s a dialogue and character man. He’s not a plot man. Especially villain plots. The exception is his film Serenity, but otherwise... well Age of Ultron tells you everything you need to know about his plot issues. It’s a confusing mess with wierd pacing and a disappointing third act. Ultron is incredible in his first and last scene, and crap everywhere between. Love the character stuff and dialogue and interactions with the team though.

The first Avengers was the same. Awful plot. Great characters and dialogue. And action. Which 2 lacked.

@regularmovieguy - great action, great humor. The script isn’t at all a mess like you claim. Aside from Ultron we’re also introduced to Wanda, Pietro, Vision, and Ulysses Klaw. We also got the Hulkbuster armor.

The movie overall is a hell of a lot of fun, and sets up so many movies that come directly after it.

@connorblaze - I disagree. I believe he’s not an editor. He openly stated he wanted his movie to be an hour longer but the studio made him cut it down to encourage repeat viewings. It was blatantly obvious that chunks were missing, and, as you said, the pacing was completely off. Though Feige will never admit it, I reckon he learned his lesson as the 3rd and 4th movies were allowed to be as long as the Russos wanted. If Whedon has been given the space to let his characters breathe, I believe the plot would have looked after itself and we would have had a far superior movie. It pains me to say it, as I am a massive Whedon and Spader fan, but I don’t particularly like the movie. Loved the first one though.

I really enjoy Age of Ultron as a proper Avengers adventure movie, in that, while it does plant a lot of the seeds for the future, its also the only Avengers movie we see all of them in their prime and working together.
Also, Spader as Ultron was awesome imho.

As for this design, I fail to see a big difference between this and what we got tbh. It feels like piling on Joss Whedon is the cool thing to do nowadays lol.

The Ultron we got on screen didn’t look terribly different that this rejected concept. The one thing I wish we didn’t get from Ultron on screen was the moving mouth. It just looked goofy seeing the jaw move up and down like Mister Ed mouthing dialogue. I know you have the great James Spader “being” Ultron....but there were times when it was too much Spader and not enough menacing evil robot bad guy. A frozen, static face with that distinct voice coming out of it...unmoving, unnatural and robotic would have been nice and creepy.

The Ultron Bots were more accurate to Ultron than Ultron himself.

They should have done better with the 'upgraded' version of ultron. All he looked like was a fatter taller version of the original. Was hoping for a cooler/more intimidating ultron.

Still worst avengers movie imo

I wish they had left him with his jack-o-lantern grin from start to finish. It was well more intimidating than the moving mouth, and it's one of the character's defining features.
