THE WINTER SOLDIER May Have Inspired Joss Whedon to Shoot AGE OF ULTRON in Scope

The Winter Soldier is taking the world by storm and it seems it may have left a lasting impression of Avengers: Age of Ultron director Joss Whedon. During The Empire Podcast, the Russo brothers have revealed that their work may have inspired Joss to make some changes for the anticipated sequel.

While Marvel's The Avengers received praise from critics, fans and general audiences alike, one of the common complaints about the movie was how cheap it looked at times. Many blamed this on Seamus McGarvey's cinematography and director Joss Whedon's choice to shoot the film in 1.85:1.

Well those who were hoping for an improvement may have gotten their wish! While speaking to Empire on the Empire Podcast, the Russo brothers have revealed that Joss may have decided to shoot Avengers: Age of Ultron in scope (2.35:1) after watching The Winter Soldier and working on the after credits scene.

"[Joss Whedon] was very complimentary after he saw the movie and very supportive. I think he loved the 2.35 aspect ratio and I think their gonna use that now on Avengers 2"

Some have noted how great the after credits scene looked so it appears that Joss has improved his cinematic eye. The hiring of a new Director of Photography, Ben Davis (Guardians of the Galaxy), may have also helped.

So what do you think? Are you looking forward to a much more cinematic looking Avengers sequel or were you happy with the visuals of the first film?

I thought they originally planned for the cinematography to be different in the first place? I'm cool with it being changed this go around.

The cinematography for Prisoners has to be some of the best I've seen yet (on a grounded level). The look of a film can really enhance the enjoyment of the experience.

Even though prisoners has nothing to deal with Avengers I just wanted to share. :/ lol

@TheBlackNerd The cinematography in Prisoners was handled by Roger Deakins, who also gave us The Assassination of Jesse James, Skyfall, The Shawshank Redemption and No Country for Old Men. As far as I'm concerned, he's the greatest Director of Photography ever.

I'm so disappointed that he's not returning for the next Bond film. Skyfall looked incredible.

As long as it's widescreen then I'm okay with it. The whole full screen, pan and scan crap really bugs me.

Oddly enough, this was one of my major gripes about The Avengers. It's a welcomed change.

Joss Whedon has a cinematic eye? I hadn't noticed. :/ Avengers looked like a TV show, a very awesome, very expensive TV show but a TV show none the less so anything that can help it look less "low budget" and more like a Nolan or Zack Snyder blockbuster would be awesome.

No problem with look of Avengers 1 but Cap 2 looked great so if he goes that route it should look cool.
I like these filmmakers learning & enjoying what others present & perhaps try hard to make the films better & better.

I kinda liked how it looked "cheap." Didn't distract me from watching the movie. TWS on the other hand really annoyed me with the shaky camera, and Iron Man 3 kept changing to a different shot every half second and ended up getting confusing.

Cap 2 looked fantastic to me. Do it!

As long as he doesn't use the shaky cam, I'm fine with it. I'm glad I didn't see TWS in 3D, I usually get dizzy. But I really want to see AoU in 3D!!

I remember when I read that the Russo brothers' were picked for TWS. I think a lot of us kinda took a deep breath. . . what a great surprise. In my opinion, Marvel looks like a genious with these two. The Russo brothers' just set the bar very VERY high for all directors to follow. My only, ONLY gripe is this "shaky" camera affect. Get rid of it.

Good news. I thought that was one of The Avengers' only real flaws.

Glad he brought on a new cinematographer, the tone of the mid-credits scene alone was pretty uniquely shot.

Loved The Avengers but we must admit it was the most realistic looking video game of all time.

Great move by Whedon! Definitely a needed area of improvement.

The aspect ratio wasn't an issue, I think the lighting and lens choices were more the difference. Avengers has a very "high key" look like a comedy or TV sitcom.
