AVENGERS: ENDGAME - Old Man Captain America's Age At The End Of The Movie Has Been Revealed

Have you been wondering how old Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) was at the end of Avengers: Endgame when he returned to the present day? Well, one of the movie's VFX producers has now spilled the beans...

One of Avengers: Endgame's biggest surprises came when we learned that Captain America had remained behind in the past to live out his life alongside Peggy Carter. That gave Steve Rogers his happy ending, but fans were left in the dark about exactly how old he was supposed to be at the end of the movie.

During a recent interview with WIRED, visual effects producer Jen Underdahl shed some light on creating the Star Spangled Avengers' aged appearance, and explained that the VFX team posed certain questions to themselves which actually reveal Steve's age when he meets up with The Falcon.

"What would a super soldier look like if he had aged 106 years? What would his skin look like?" she ponders. "[The VFX artists] took some neck off of [Evans] so he wasn’t quite as beefy, and shrunk his shoulders and his overall profile to give him that 106-year-old super soldier look."

Captain America clearly lived a good, long life, but his future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is now unclear. Will he have died by the time The Falcon and The Winter Soldier begins, or could there be another explanation for why we're not going to see him again?

For now, it appears as if we'll just have to wait and see.

Captain Marvel leads the charge as Earth's Mightiest Heroes hover over Titan II and attempt to formulate a plan to take down Thanos and bring the trillions who died back to life.

In this before and after shot, we see how the ship the team travelled in was enhanced with visual effects and outer space was added in the background. Sean Gunn is also replaced with Rocket!

This is a particularly interesting shot as we see how those effects surrounding Captain Marvel were created. We also see that some changes were made to the colour of the hero's costume.

With the rest of the Guardians of the Galaxy dead and gone, Rocket was given the spotlight and pretty much became an Avenger as a result. Needless to say, he looked awesome in this movie.

Captain Marvel's costume has undergone some changes since her first appearance in the 1990s, but this suit didn't last particularly long as the 2023 version was obviously completely redesigned.

The Guardians' ship hovers over Titan II, and this is a gorgeous piece of imagery. Moments later, Thanos would be decapitated by Thor and that would set the 2014 version on his quest for revenge.

These revealing before and after images show how the battle between the two versions of Captain America was created. It was an impressive sequence and clearly not that easy to put together.

The team blasts into outer space here as the imagery introduced in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 showing how spaceships essentially enter lightspeed made its return in Avengers: Endgame

Who would have guessed that Stormbreaker was entirely CGI? Then again, considering the fact that it passed right by Brie Larson's head, it's understandable that Marvel didn't want to risk anything!

Many thanks to Art of VFX for the images used in this post!

If he lived to be past 106 years old, I'd like to imagine he had at least one cat in his span of time.

@MosquitoFarmer - It doesn't matter. Marvel introduced the quantum verse and a time machine that can de-age any character using the time vortex. When Chris Evans or any dead character needs a career revitalization, they can use either of those to bring back any of them. The Pym particles can solve everything in the MCU now, which is why I didn’t like Endgame as much. Or Marvel can always troll people by using a skrull like Far From Home did.

@mastakilla39 - Alright...? I'm just here trying to talk about cats.

@mastakilla39 - Oh god, tell me about it. I have very vague memories of seeing the Broadway show when I was little. I distinctly remember the actors walking down the aisles while singing. After seeing the movie trailer, I'm glad that's all I remember.

This person isn’t including the years in ice. We know from Winter Soldier that the Russo’s do include it.

So while Cap looks around 106 years old, he is actually about 185 years old.

He’s about 185. Account for the years in ice which I theorize really made the serum do A LOT OF WORK just to keep him alive in such a frigid environment.

But for Steve to even look physically in his 90s at 185 is a testament to the serum and the late great Erskine’s work.

Man was in his bag when he created the serum haha

Far From Home confirmed Steve died off-screen. We all knew Evans wasn't coming back and that sealed it. Sam is Cap. America now.

I wish I'll look like this when I turn 106.

Gone too soon. Gonna miss him way more than Tony.

I still think the practical aging make-up in a Swedish film called "The Hundred Year Old Who Climed Out The Window and Dissapeared" is pretty amazing concidering it is a low budget movie from freaking Sweden..

Without makeup:

@DevarikaWoulf that confirmed nothing. All that tells us is that hes mentioned as dead by the avengers, since no matter what the cap that could continue to lead the avengers is gone and all we have is this old guy. You're just assuming that false information isn't shared with the public or that full information isnt given. Now he's definitely "dead" in the sense we won't have him involved in anything ever again. But acting like old man steve is definitively dead is too presumptuous.

@Origame

I think you're looking too much into it story-wise. Think more behind the scenes: Chris Evans is done with the role and ready to move onto other projects. Steve Rogers was on death's doors last we'd seen him and his entire story arc is finished. To me it's clear he's as dead as Tony and the MCU is moving on. But obviously people can think whatever.

@DevarikaWoulf ...did you read my comment? Because i included this point "now he's definitely "dead" in the sense that we won't have him involved in anything ever again."

Im well aware he's done with the franchise and I expressed that. Im saying they haven't necessarily killed him off. Just found a way to give him a happy ending while explaining why he's not gonna help moving forward, i.e. having him old and stuff.

I see some comments pointing out that we also have to include the years he was frozen in ice and the years in the present, but didn't the 70 years in ice pretty much stop a him aging during that time?

@DevarikaWoulf - I don’t think that means he actually died off screen though . I think the world thinks he died and doesn’t know that he’s just retired and living amongst them now. They just aren’t privy to what the audience knows, not uncommon in ongoing stories.

The VFX producer is simply using Cap's birth year (1918) to the current MCU year (2023) which is roughly 106 years. But Cap is actually older than that number. Because he's relived some years depending on the year he returned in the past and to reliving the years during the MCU present & future up to 2023. And that's not counting the 70+ years he spent in the ice which would put him over 200 years.

This site does not have an edit so I'll have to correct myself. Cap wouldn't be 200+ years even if spending time in the ice during his first life spent. You know how it goes -you send before vetting your comment and you're stuck with it.

Bottom line is the VFX supervisor is using Caps age chronologically. Something we all could had figured out. Which makes the importance of this rather pointless as something newsworthy. It's obviously a slow news day.

Technically he's older than that if you count his years in the ice. He was 98 in Endgame before going back in time to the 50's. So that's another 68 years. He may be physically 106, but he's actually 174 years old at the end of Endgame
Omegacron
Omegacron - 9/12/2019, 9:04 AM
That's 106 AFTER taking the serum, and not counting the years frozen, I'm sure. If he took the serum in 1941 when he was 23 years old, then he's AT A MINIMUM 129. Add 70 years as a Capsicle and we're talking 199.

@Omegacron - yeah this sort of thing hadn't occurred to me at all until I think I saw someone made reference to it on twitter a few weeks back. That sure, he's not exactly like Wolverine or Aragorn or anything, but the serum does make him age much less slowly than an average human. So even if he LOOKS to us there like a typical 90-100 year old man, theoretically it could've meant he lived almost twice as long of a life.
