AVENGERS: ENDGAME Setting Up The LOKI TV Series Coming To Disney+ Was A Happy Accident

Avengers: Endgame perfectly set the stage for the Loki TV series coming to Disney+, but the movie's writer has confirmed that it was a happy accident rather than a deliberate move on Marvel's part...

During Avengers: Endgame, Earth's Mightiest Heroes travelled back to 2012 to retrieve the Mind and Space Stones. Unfortunately, things went wrong, and Loki managed to get his hands back on the Tesseract, using it to make his escape. With that, the stage was set for a Disney+ TV series which is currently expected to premiere next year.

That will deal with the villainous God of Mischief travelling through time, only to run afoul of the TVA (Time Variance Authority). However, while you might think this was deliberate planning on Marvel Studios' part, it turns out that it was a happy accident courtesy of the movie's writers!

During a recent live commentary, Christhoper Markus and Stephen McFeely revealed that they only had Loki escape with the Tesseract because it was a "juicy way to upset the heist." That makes sense as it obviously forced Captain America and Iron Man to travel back to the 1970s, but Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige clearly used that moment as a launching platform for Loki.

It's unclear whether Loki will still arrive as planned next year due to COVID-19, but here's hoping, because it sounds like it's going to be a fun ride - even if the premise came about by chance!

I love that their plan is almost entirely screwed up because it involved Loki. Like, that was such a perfect Loki moment and I'm so happy that it goes nowhere within the film. As fun as it would've been to have them have to detour to chase him down, it was nice how random it all was, perfectly fitting a god of mischief.

ONe of the fun things about the MCU is they take the ball and run with it. Not everything is planned to a nicety.

I don't know. It seems absurd to include such a dangling thread like that. Of course it was going to need to be answered -- eventually.

It's like Red Skull in First Avenger. He had to come back eventually.

These writers, as much as I love them, contradict themselves over time and often just say things.

@PsychoticSpaceRaccoon - well endgame was conceived and written before loki probably even hit the concept stage so Feige probably saw the script and used that scene as set up. You can do that with a bunch stuff from endgame

@BlackBeltJones - Trust me there are bunch of things in the MCU that were decided well after the fact, like Loki getting a series following after EG being something they decided well after the fact

for example the Tesseract and Scepter werent Infinity Stones when they did Avengers 1, but they decided to use the opportunity to make them Infinity Stones when they decided to use the Infinity Gauntlet story.

So its not impossible that when they filmed EG back in 2017, they looked at the Loki thing and Feige thought "Hey, maybe we can do something with this down the line"

All of the MCU is a happy accident.

@Reeds2Much - In some ways it actually is, while they planned out A LOT of it they also adapted when given opportunities. The Feige vs Ike beef, the Spider-man deal, and the HUGE risk of building it all on the back of an RDJ led Iron Man film.

There were plenty of fortunate circumstances that aided the MCU in becoming what it is today!

I don't know why anyone is skeptical... as noted by @PsychoticSpaceRaccoon they did the exact same thing with the Red Skull way back in The First Avenger, and obviously didn't have any immediate plans for where he went or when we'd see him again (if ever.) Eight years later they found a use for the dangling plot thread.

That Feige and company decided to pounce on this one immediately doesn't make it any less likely that it was a story driven idea and not some executive order.

You mean to tell me that not every single thing in the MCU is planned? Blasphemy.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - I know right?! Sometimes you just have to go with it when an opportunity presents itself.

I wasn’t keen on a stand-alone Loki show at first, considering he’s been “killed off” a few times but after seeing the set photos, the cast, TVA, the Squadron Supreme rumours, I’m eagerly anticipating seeing Tom Hiddleston as Loki acting against characters that aren’t Thor for a change.

I believe them. My guess is then they came up with this Loki show after Endgame was written
