AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR - Nick Fury's CAPTAIN MARVEL Pager Actually Includes A Reference To S.W.O.R.D.

In Avengers: Infinity War's post-credits scene, Nick Fury used a pager to reach out to Captain Marvel, and a closer look at the back of that device reveals a reference to S.W.O.R.D. Check it out...

Avengers: Infinity War ended with Nick Fury attempting to contact Carol Danvers with a very unique little pager, while Captain Marvel explained its backstory. We never got an overly detailed look at the pager (even when Earth's Mightiest Heroes were examining it), but the prototype prop used to create it has now found its way on to eBay.

What's interesting is the fact that we get to see the back of the pager, and as well as the S.H.I.E.L.D. logo, you can see it's also labelled with "Sentient World Observation and Response Department." Of course, that's S.W.O.R.D., the space-based counterpart to S.H.I.E.L.D.

Marvel Studios clearly decided against referencing this in Avengers: Infinity War, Captain Marvel, or even Avengers: Endgame, but this essentially confirms that S.W.O.R.D. has been around in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for longer than we thought. However, with the agency set to be introduced in WandaVision, it's possible they were established following Thanos' attack on Earth.

Seeing as Nick Fury was hanging out in space with the Skrulls at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home, it's possible that was tied into S.W.O.R.D. as well, but we'll obviously have to wait and see.

@MosquitoFarmer

If Feige only knew the POWA of the Multiverse...

He'd NEVER ignore AoS or the Netflixverse.

Oh well, i read some rumors about the AoS finale and shit could be DOPE!

@Doomsday8888 - Multiverse is a double sided sword, on one hand everything is possible and everything can be canon, on the other, deaths have no meaning and everything can be reversed if you find the right alternate universe.

@JustALurker

I see what you're saying and yeah you could get another Black Widow or Tony from a parallel Earth but

Things can't be reversed by a Multiverse...i mean, unless you use the stones to do that in which case, yeah, i guess...

Now Hypertime on the other hand...that concept REALLY changes things by...lol, basically not changing anything.

@JustALurker - Black Widow was a skrull. She's taking spider-woman's place in the game. Penny, penny.

@JustALurker - that death is meaningless thing is stupid, it’s not the same person cause they didn’t have the same experiences that person in the original universe had

I can only guess that SWORD was a small division proposed by FURY at some point when he first encountered aliens but has since gone defunct. With no alien activity popping up for decades until Thor and the Avengers pretty much existing, killed a need for SWORD.

In a post Thanos world, SWORD would make sense to get going again. No Avengers too.

@BlackBeltJones - Yeah, it was probably manned by some poor Mulder type until around the events of “The Avengers”, when they likely started getting more budget going their way.

Neat little detail. With so much going on, it was probably better they didn't focus on it.

@TheDoctor1225 @DrRichards- goddamn guys, I can't believe that tonight is the end of SHIELD. Just rewatched episode 11 and watched the video of the team's farewell to the fans. Ooof. Can't wait to see what crazy, second to none shenanigans they pull in these final 2 episodes. Kolpack's tease of the VFX work has me hyped. I might be a little delayed in sharing my thoughts online (really hope we get an article about the show after it ends) as I don't have cable where I am, so have to wait for episodes to be online.

Is this the pager Captain Marvel had at the end of her solo movie? And Fury developed a SWORD logo?

So SWORD does exist in the MCU.
