AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR: Don Cheadle On His Return As War Machine, CIVIL WAR Fallout, And More

In a new interview, Avengers: Infinity War star Don Cheadle talks about what Rhodey has been up to since Captain America: Civil War, his return as War Machine, and working with former foe, Steve Rogers.

The last time we saw Colonel James "Rhodey" Rhodes, he was recovering from a pretty nasty spinal injury after being blasted out of the sky by The Vision while he was suited up as War Machine. Thanks to Tony Stark, he had found a way to walk again by the time the credits rolled on Civil War and it's since been confirmed that he'll actually join the battle against Thanos in Wakanda in Avengers: Infinity War.

In a new interview, Don Cheadle was asked about what Rhodey has been up to since he last showed up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and it sounds like he's been struggling to recover from his injuries.

"Well clearly there was a pretty significant moment for Rhodey at the end of Civil War, where he was accidentally shot out of the air by Vision … who is now my mortal enemy.  No, I think we worked it out over the break. And now he’s coming back to the Avengers, back to his team.  A little ambivalent, I think, with a new rig by Tony, which of course he had to put his name on. So Tony. Like I’m gonna not know who made them? And he’s rejoining the team and reintroduced back here in this Wakanda storyline.

"I think there are definitely more questions for Rhodey. I think he was always somewhat straddling with having Tony as a friend and trying to support him and do what he needed, being outside of the lines, but still somehow trying to stay within the chain of command, as the military man that he is. So I think that’s become more fraught, and probably more frayed, as the storylines go forward."

As for how War Machine feels to be working alongside the heroes he actually came to blows with over the Sokovia Accords, it sounds like he's accepting of it but what about #TeamIronMan leader, Tony Stark? "Well, I think at the end of the day that division was not something that was really formed by the characters in the movie. There were outside pressures that created that division. And they ultimately want to be back together. So I think that Tony … I imagine that he’s understanding of it."

As for the relationship between Rhodey and his old pal Tony, Cheadle added: "I haven’t seen him yet. And I’m not sure what it is gonna be. But I think, look, they always have the “taking the piss out of each other” a little bit. But I think their relationship has deepened since the last event. I think Tony feels somewhat responsible and culpable in a way. But again, he’s always had my back in a way. That only he could really have." So, it doesn't sound like things will have changed too much for them!

So...is he going to be more than just a little side piece to fill out a roster?

I love Don but I think I prefer Terrence Howard as Rhodey. His and RDJs chemistry in the first movie was absolutely fantastic. I also think Terrence could pull off the one-liners a little better than Don.

Both great actors, though. And I'm happy Don was the man to replace him if there was going to be anyone else.

@regularmovieguy - from what i understand the role was always written for Don but he had another acting gig and couldn't do it, so Terrence took his place.

@regularmovieguy - I think both were bad choices.

Russos gave him a legit place and opinion in CW and set him up for an arc going forward. Which I appreciated. They acknowledged him.

@BlackBeltJones - Yeah I loved that whole round table conversation they had in Civil War. It is scenes like that that really flesh out the motivations for these heroes going forward.

Unpopular opinion: I like Cheadle over Howard as War Machine.

If you haven't seen him in House of Lies on Showtime, it's well worth the watch. He's a great actor.

There just needs to be a few scenes of war machine using all his guns at once to kill something or multiples things. Buses, Hammeroids, Ultrons, hopefully splatter a bunch of outriders.

Cheadle is a great actor. He played a doctor on ER for a couple of episodes with Parkinson’s disease and was awsome. But Howard was a smooth MOFO and I preferred his take.

What's all this preference for Howard? That guy sucks.

Cheadle is both a great actor and a good person.

@PsychoticSpaceRaccoon - Howard kind of suggested RDJ for the Ironman role so....

@incredibleTalk - which has always been a bizarre reference for me because that means they would have cast war machine before iron man and then had terrence giving advice as to who should play iron man... just doesn't make sense. Also, the war machine role was originally written for Don but Don had an acting conflict and couldn't take the job so Terrence was recommended by Don. Why would someone that wasn't even the primary actor chosen for a supporting man role be the guy suggesting who the lead role should be???

@JonC - ...at the time Howard had more star power than RDJ so being friends with strugggling RDJ helped him skyrocket to the top with this role...Howard recieved more money in Ironman 1 but RDJ made more money in Ironman 2 and Howard wasn't going for it. If RDJ was so popular before Ironman ...what film do you remember him in?

@incredibleTalk - RDJ had more exposure than Howard for sure, but his well documented substance abuse made him a very big question mark.

I remember him as far back as Weird Science.
