AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Writers Detail Deleted Scene Pitting Bruce Banner v Hulk In Doctor Strange's Mindscape

The writers of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame have revealed that one deleted scene from the former would have seen Bruce Banner battle The Hulk in The Grandmaster's arena. Check it out...

We already know of a lot of deleted scenes that didn't make it into Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, but writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely have now revealed another.

After explaining that some of the sequences they scrapped would have "[sucked] the air" out of Thanos' storyline in Infinity War, Markus explained that, "There was a sequence in the first movie where they went into the places in the Doctor Strange universe called the mindscape and everyone faces themselves. It was great but had absolutely nothing to do with anything."

McFeely went on to reveal more about the scene. "Banner meets the Hulk, I think in the arena from Ragnarok. Only one of them was getting out of there, and then that one showed up in Wakanda [in Infinity War] and he had merged. That merging that currently happens in [Endgame] in a diner, and he’s eating a huge stack of pancakes? That initially happened at the end of Infinity War."

This would have resulted in the Jade Giant breaking out of the Hulkbuster armour and helping during that final battle in Wakanda, and while this would have been cool to see, it probably would have been extremely expensive and definitely something that would have slowed down the final act's momentum as the Mad Titan attempted to gain the last of the Infinity Stones.

Do you guys think this would have been a better introduction for Smart Hulk?

Thor: The Dark World's Alternate Ending

Thorq

At the end of Thor: The Dark World, the God of Thunder returns to Asgard and refuses to take the throne. It's then we learn that Loki is impersonating Odin and a cute mid-credits scene reunites Thor and Jane Foster. However, this alternate ending would have seen Jane tell the hero that she couldn't go with him to Asgard because she wouldn't have a purpose in that realm.

As Thor gets upset, she reminds him that he's a King now and shouldn't remain on Earth just for her.

The God of Thunder returns to Asgard and surveys his people alongside his father, a sign that the original plan was for Thor to finally become King of Asgard, but sadly lose Jane in the process.

Zemo Shows His Dark Side

Zemp

In Captain America: Civil War, Zemo managed to steal the book of code words which could be used to control The Winter Soldier from a former HYDRA agent by hanging him upside down in his basement and drowning him in a sink. However, an earlier version of that scene was even darker.

Zemo would have been shown at a black market auction for illegal weapons and it's then he would have used a gas to kill everyone in attendance (making him a mass murderer) and steal the book.

Hela's Arrival On Earth...In New York City

Hela

When Thor: Ragnarok was shooting, we spotted Anthony Hopkins in New York City as a homeless version of Odin. That never made it into the theatrical version and the actor's final scenes as the character instead took place in Norway. Now, though, we finally know how that scene was supposed to play out.

Thor and Loki find Odin in New York, and it appears as if he's drunk and that he's lost his memory. It quickly becomes clear that he remembers his sons, though, and he warns them about Hela's arrival. It's then that she destroys Mjolnir and kills her father as Loki calls for the Bifrost so he and Thor can escape.

Captain Marvel Joins The Avengers

AOU

Joss Whedon wanted Captain Marvel to make her MCU debut at the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron, but Kevin Feige ultimately said "no" to the idea and she didn't appear until earlier this year.

However, in this deleted scene from the 2015 sequel, a stand-in is shown filling in on set for Carol Danvers as the original plan was to add the actress who would have played her at a later date.

Hulk Busts Out

Hulkbuster

Promo art and toys confirmed that this was the plan for Avengers: Infinity War before reshoots changed things, and one of the deleted scenes shows a very rough version of The Hulk breaking his way out of the Hulkbuster armour after being convinced to return by Bruce Banner.

The unfinished VFX don't really do the scene justice, but Cull Obsidian still meets his maker in the exact same way as the Hulkbuster hand is used to send him flying into the shield surrounding Wakanda.

The Avengers Meet Smart Hulk

Shulk

As you might expect, the rest of Earth's Mightiest Heroes have something to say about The Hulk's return and shortly before Thanos arrives, The Falcon suggests Black Widow give the Jade Giant a lullaby. However, the hero then speaks with Banner's voice and they're both left standing there stunned.

Unfortunately, there's no deleted scene showing how the Hulk/Thanos rematch would have gone down.

Carol Danvers Meets The True Supreme Intelligence

Carol

We've heard that a comic accurate version of the Supreme Intelligence was once set to appear in Captain Marvel, and this deleted scene confirms that. Shortly after Carol Danvers manages to break free from Thw SI's control, she finally gets to see its true form (rather than Mar-Vell) for herself.

Just like in the comics, the Supreme Intelligence is a massive, tentacled monster, so it's obviously hard to figure out why Marvel Studios wouldn't include this fan-pleasing moment in the movie.

The Grandmaster Gets His Comeuppance

Grandmaster

Thor: Ragnarok's after-credits scene features The Grandmaster surrounded by his not-quite-so-loyal subjects, but this deleted scene sheds a little more like on how the quirky villain winds up there.

The Grandmaster is actually shown chasing down the movie's heroes in a ship before he ends up crashing and landing in a junk pile. This scene obviously sets up that post-credits scene for later on.

Ant-Man And The Wasp's Big Mistake

Ghost

Ant-Man and The Wasp reveals that Hank Pym discredited Ghost's father and that's what led to him experimenting with the tech which ultimately transformed his daughter. However, this deleted scene reveals that a suited up Hank and Janet were actually directly involved in that accident.

This likely would have made things even more personal for Ghost, but might have made it harder to believe she would have done anything other than want to kill those two during the final act!

Thor's Awkward Kiss With Valkyrie

Thor

We've heard about this scene but finally get to see it in this box set. During Thor's conversation with Valkyrie about her ruling Asgard before he heads off with the Guardians at the end of Avengers: Endgame, the God of Thunder attempts to kiss her but quickly gets rejected by the formidable warrior.

They both play it off as a joke, but it's clear from this that he's not exactly Valkyrie's type.

Confirmation Of A Previous Leak

Infinity-War

Remember that leaked VFX image showing Doctor Strange instructing Spider-Man to save the Guardians? Well, we now know that it was the real deal because this Avengers: Infinity War deleted scene features the Sorcerer Supreme - in his Astral form - telling the wall-crawler that Thanos has separated the team's souls from their bodies and that the young hero needs to act quickly.

Spidey admits that he has no idea what to do, but Strange points out that Mantis does. As a result, the web-slinger rescues the Guardians and brings them to Mantis so that she can save them.

Howard Stark's Message From The Grave

Howard

We've already seen Iron Man's big deleted scene (it features Nick Fury referencing the likes of Spider-Man and the X-Men), but for Iron Man 2, Howard Stark's message to Tony from the grave would have featured the young Tony sitting on his father's lap as Howard talked to his son from the past.

Should have been included. As well as the mcu has done with most of its character. Post the first Avengers movie, the portrayal of Hulk slowly went down hill, making him more childish and skipping over major development, like Hulk developing a personality outside of being an angry monster and Hulk and Banner making peace with each other and becoming one. They could have done something similar to Avengers EMH did with them coming to an understanding

@dracula - it's probably because they consulted with Ruffalo about hulks arc, instead of following the lede through to the end

Man these two dudes had some crazy scenes/ideas for both films. I wanted the Cap eating bloody mash potatoes Goddamnit!!

There definitely should have been a somewhat in depth Banner/Hulk confrontation over the course of the movies. With the general structure being what it was it would likely really have been tough to find a good time for that, tough.

Hulk is one of the more problematic parts of the Infinity duology.

I liked Smart Hulk a lot, but seeing his development off-screen was really annoying. That happened quite a bit in Endgame and I still find the five year gap to be a major mistake.

@BountyCipher @Necropolitan- I think there were some missed opportunity after the snap.

The 5 year gap, as you said. Literally was there to avoid that instant chaos because the way everyone was reacting it was as if it had just happened.

I would have liked to see them expand on Cap saying there was whales in the Hudson. Maybe half the world is thriving after snap yet the avengers still don't feel quite right.

Now we have somewhat of a philosophical debate and a callback to Age of Ultron

"you wanna protect the world but don't want it to change"

Because at the end of the day having people coming back 5 years later isn't necessarily a fix all, It creates confusion. We're talking about world leaders, spouses, old bosses come back so what do they do?
MyCoolYoung
MyCoolYoung - 11/21/2019, 5:12 AM
@BountyCipher - I know 5 years in and of itself it's enough for the world to thrive but I think they would've made strides like a post 9/11 world.

Not much infrastructure was destroyed and the rules are still in place. Maybe endgame needed another villain or be a 3 parter(infinity war being the first of course). I think they needed someone to rise up and this charismatic person to Shepard the world into post snap bliss, of course they have nefarious purposes, but we can't do that because it's too far from the central plot.

I would have liked Thanos to have handed the avengers their own ass in the beginning them destroyed the stones in front of them. Or maybe he didn't destroy the stones and they had to travel in silence through the quantum realm to retrieve the stones.

I don't know, I guess I wanted a lot but I feel like somewhere in endgame there was a better movie.

@BountyCipher @@MyCoolYoung - Both of you point out why exactly I don't like the five year gap. Or more specifically, why I think five years was way too much time and only benefits Tony's side of things. Five years feels like such a good time for Tony to have a 5-6 kid, old enough to have lines but young enough to be cute and vulnerable. Everyone else I think just gets a raw deal:

- We know Nat had some sort of team with Rhodey, Okoye, Carol and Rocket but how long has this been a thing? Secondly, Wakanda isn't even addressed at all (seriously, five years without a king and princess and the film had nothing to say about that). Third, Carol is supposed to have reconnected with her humanity decades ago but she just goes back to space again for how many years? And third, Nat used to work with Clint, is as good as a spy (if not better) than Clint and yet can't find him four five years until when it's convenient.

- Speaking of Clint, we never get a good idea of how long he's been going on a killing spree (and this development happens off-screen). Was he doing it for five years? How come he never even reached out to the Avengers? Found out if they were okay too?

- I also find it hard to believe that no one had seen Thor for five years? Now I can imagine it would have taken about that amount of time to set up New Asgard, but it's extremely odd that no one had actually gone to see Thor, especially since he didn't exactly refuse to see Banner and Rocket.

- You're trying to tell me that for five years no one turned on the Quantum van (or whatever you call it)? I don't really care that a rat turned it on (even though it is weird that Scott didn't go into the QR without an enlarge disk and a reactor to get himself out should something go wrong), but I feel like someone should have definitely turned it on, even if it was by accident. Where were the other members of Xcon?

- I also feel like even Tony not doing anything for five was extremely unlike him. He's been shown to be too proactive (almost to a fault) and all of a sudden he just decides to quit? I understand Morgan was a new responsibility but so was Peter, and he seemingly just forgot all about him. We've seen Tony again and again sacrifice everything to just be Iron Man. For him to not bother to do anything for five years feels odd.

And there's the other stuff like how are certain character relationships different because of who got dusted and who didn't. Like T'Challa and Nakia now. Was she dusted too? Or would every other director do it like Far From Home where all convenient cast members would be dusted to avoid thinking about it?

I hate saying things like this about writers but a part of me thinks Markus and McFeely didn't think about this gap all that much. One or two years should have been enough. Tony having a baby would have been just fine. And the Avengers going apart for about a year or two wouldn't have been totally out of the question.

I really wanted to see a Hulk vs Thanos rematch. And Smart Hulk was cool to see but being Banner was in control I still wish to see him smash.

"it probably would have been extremely expensive" Somehow I don't think that had anything to do with the decision.

The way they handled hulk in those last two movies was... bizarre. First going through the whole awkward set up of the hulk being scared after being beaten by Thanos (they can claim that wasn’t that case all they want but that’s how it was portrayed in the movie so that’s how I’m taking it) and then after setting that up just saying ‘anyway that all got sorted out it’s not important. Just feels like they didn’t know what to do with the character.

Since the Russos took over I feel we missed out on some really interesting and "out there" scenarios that I think Whedon would have embraced.
