EDITORIAL: The Avengers Line Up!

I just wanted to put my 2 cents in on what I think of The Avengers Movie line up and get your opinions in the process.

For months now the speculation regarding the upcoming film The Avengers, has been cause for debate among over expectant comic fans everywhere. Who's going to make up the roster? Is it going to follow The Ultimates? Who will they face? Speculation about Edward Norton portraying Bruce Banner has fueled many an argument. The Pyms have fanned other hot debates. The studio can't make an Avengers movie without so and so. If they do have a part in the movie, what actor will they get for the character. And so on and so on and so on.

Everyone has known for sure that Captain America, Iron Man and Thor would be featured in the film, and that is where the opinions start to go in every direction imaginable. Some people want to see the original line up from 1963 and will accept nothing short of that. Other people want to see The Ultimates and can't envision anything else being adaptable to the big screen.

Now, before I go any further, let me tell you what I would have wanted. I am an Avenger nutcase. I have always loved comics but without a doubt I would trade any other comic or all other comics for The Avengers. Other people have their own favorite but The Avengers are mine, by far. It's not even close. I have been reading The Avengers since the late 70's so I'm pretty up on all things Avengers, discounting the crap they tried to pass off as good comics in the 90's. That stuff almost killed the title permanently.

Knowing that, you could probably guess that I would love to see the original line up. Well evidently, that's not going to happen. The line up that has been announced is Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, The Hulk, Hawkeye and The Black Widow (and no I don't count Nick Fury as an Avenger). Is it possible that there will be more characters introduced in the movie that have yet to be announced? Yes, it is completely possible but not likely and I'm OK with that. Here is why you should be also.

The Avengers as we all know, have been around for almost 50 years. After the first four or five years the line up began to look like a revolving door with the proverbial who's who of the Marvel Universe walking in and out every four or five issues. Marvel always used The Avengers to promote their up and coming or completely new characters that they really could not place in a self titled comic. The Fantastic Four had a closed roster, The X-Men was a private party (mutants only) and none of Marvels other group titles lasted long enough for them to promote anything new. So, outside of a stint on The Avengers a relatively unknown hero may have Marvel Two in One or Marvel team Up to look forward to but it was going to be a one shot deal.

During this in and out, merry go round roster ride there have been some constants from early on. Discounting the original five, I would consider Hawkeye, The Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, Hercules, The Black Panther, The Vision, The Beast, Wonderman, Mrs. Marvel and The Falcon to be these constants. The Black Widow could be placed in this group also. Even though she was not a member until much later, she was in and around the team much earlier than others in this group.

Other heroes came and went but if you place the original five on a list with these others you will find The Avengers line up has always consisted of at least two of these people and one of them is always the leader.

Out of this group Hawkeye and The Vision may as well be considered The Avengers staples for the simple reason that they have never had anywhere else to go. Sure they have worked with other heroes and teams but they absolutely don't fit in anywhere else. They are each in their own way a product of The Avengers in the same manner that Martian Manhunter is a product of The JLA.

Now in recent years, marvel has tried the reverse of it's previous promotional tactic to bring The Avenger titles back to where they belong as Marvels premier comic books. Instead of using the title to promote its individual characters, Marvel has used it's prominent heroes such as Spider Man, Luke Cage and Wolverine to boost Avengers sales, and it worked.

Which brings me back to the topic of who should be in the movie. I have already stated that I thought it should be the original team but thats not going to happen. For whatever reason, Marvel has decided to leave The Pyms out of the movie (as far as we know). Well if you are going to replace these two classic characters, it should be with two other classic characters, which takes us back to the second list.

The two that stand out as true blue, through and through Avengers on that list are Hawkeye and The Vision, for reasons that I already stated. Alright, so Hawkeye is a shoe in, what about The Vision? He can under no circumstances, be used for this movie. WHY, you ask? If Hank Pym has not been introduced you can't use the most famous creation of his most famous creation without severely angering the fan base. You have to go with your next logical choice.

The movie needs a woman in the fold to replace The Wasp and offset all the flying testosterone. The Scarlet Witch would be perfect. However, she won't work without her famous brother being close by and it's entirely possible that she is off limits because she is a mutant and Freakin Fox has the rights to Marvels mutants.

This leaves us with The Black Widow, who not only has been around the team almost since the beginning but has ties to almost every character in the Marvel Universe. She can be used fluidly in almost any film Marvel wants to shoot in the future. Like it or not, she is actually a better catalyst, or glue to hold Marvels plans together than The Wasp could have ever been.

To wrap up a long story, I am not at all dissatisfied with the line up Marvel has announced. I think it gives them a very solid platform to build any and all movies they have planned in their future.

As for the Pyms, I am sure they will show up in an Avengers movie soon enough. There are too many possibilities out there that are directly tied to them for Marvel to ignore them.

To all the other purists out there that are disappointed with this line up, I say sit back and give it a chance. It looks like it could be one Hell of a film.

As usual, let your opinion be heard below.

We can do without Black Widow especially if she's played by Scarlett Johansson. I want Wasp and Hank Pym instead.

Exactly LEEE777. They were the founders of the group and I prefer they stick with how it really started rather that them giving it that Ultimates flavor to it since I never picked up any Ultimates comics. I just didn't see any point to it. I prefer they stick to the source rather than making it too flashy.

I'm with hawks, i'm a purist and would love ALL cbms to be faithful to the comic they're based on, but fact of the matter is, it doesn't always transfer to the media of the silver screen well. I have the utmost faith in Mr. Whedon, he's done a lot of very good things, and until proven otherwise, i'll think he's the right man for this job.

Brilliant editorial HAWKS! :) I'm now pretty sure that they're saving Hank and Jan for The Avengers 2 after they're introduced in the Ant-Man movie! I do hope that Whedon will use this oppurtnity to introduce a pile of new characters like Ms. Marvel and Wonder Man so they can be developed in future Marvel Studios movies and then become a part of the team later on!

I think that the team we have at the moment is good especially as The Avengers will surely focus on setting up the team. The big three alongside Hawkeye and Black Widow sounds pretty great IMO! However, I cant deny that I wish they'd used movies like Iron Man 2, Thor and Captain America to set up the Pym's so they could have eventually been a part of the team. Hulk vs. Giant Man would have been EPIC...

I don't mind them mixing it up a bit for the cinematic universe. I mean could you imagine if they stuck to the origins of avengers rigidly? We wouldn't have captain america, well not the first film anyway

Ultimates version is written all over this from the moment they created Ultimate Nick Fury in the Samuel Jackson mold, people should've realized that this was the way it was heading, Ant-Man & Wasp (The Pyms) are from Ultimates though and it would've been great to have them in the movie even as scientist but they are getting solo Ant-Man movie... So while they aren't in Avenger eventually they may join later on and simply adding them to a line-up that is already packed with heroes that have already had solo movies would be a disservice to them as they would merely be in the background...

I was kind of pissed about the lack of Pym's, but I really don't mind anymore. I love the inclusion of Hawkeye and Renner playing him has pretty much made me forget about the Pym's.

Thanks everyone. I not only see this line up as not being a let down but as pretty damn good. It sure could have ended up being alot worse considering how many characters have been Avengers through the years.

dannyrand@ My sentiments exactly.

Films are also made for the mainstream public and not just the minority of viewers who are CB fans. Mainstream public doesn't have a clue who Hand and Janet are. The film has enough to take care of in developing the chemistry between the established and lead characters. So many times we hear complaining here about CBM's taking on too many characters where they can't lend justice to the development of the characters, which weakens the overall story. I can see this happening if Hank and Janet are added in and play a key role. If there was a separate movie released first, it would be a different story. That's why I am okay if Hank and Jan are not in the first movie.

Agreed Danny. To many characters means less screen time for others. They should use this as a spring board for other characters like antman or the black panther (he's one of my favorites) See if there liked enough on the screen to warrent there own movies. Now we all know Wheddon likes to kill of ppl like there's no tomm. so I'm expecting an opening or two for avengers 2 and who's to say Tonys going to stay he's a loner by nature with an already established movie series with more to go I'm sure.

First off this is The Ultimates version don't you see the ultimates Black Nick Fury? Don't you see Caps helmet with no wings on it and brown boots? I think it's a big mistake not to have Ant-Man and Wasp, Marvel owes alot of this new success to the Ultimate Avengers cartoon movie and Comic Book! They should have some respect and use those characters!
Hawksblueyes
Hawksblueyes - 7/25/2010, 6:09 PM
Gab: You don't suppose that The Ultimates owe any respect to the 40 years of groundwork the original laid for the title to be able to handle exploring a completely seperate Universe do you?

Like it or not this is a mixture of the two universes. There is not one thing owed to The Ultimates that is not already visible in this movie.
FirstLady
FirstLady - 7/25/2010, 6:10 PM
@Gab I agree, they do owe their newly found success to the cartoon! And the comic book was amazing! How could you not add those two characters to the Movie? They would do nothing but add more exictment and deliver great scenes to the movie! Let's get it together Marvel! We want to see them in the movie!
Hawksblueyes
Hawksblueyes - 7/25/2010, 6:23 PM
tea: I agree. Although Stark has more of an Ultimate personality, Iron Man and Thor look mainstream marvel. This is going to be an amalgam of the two universes for sure.

Regardless, it's looking promising.

FirstLady - 7/25/2010, 6:29 PM
I heard Joe Johnston say that Captian America and the Avengers would be based off of the newer comics. The black nick fury, caps outfit, and the modern settings screams Ultimates! They just didn't put it in the title! Tell me how Hawkeye is a better fit than Ant-Man and Wasp. Do you know what the Hulk will do to his bow and arrows, name one character Hawkeye can beat in the Marvel Universe... good or bad? Him and Wasp should have to fight for the last spot. Lol
Hawksblueyes
Hawksblueyes - 7/25/2010, 6:33 PM
FirstLady: Have you ever read any Avenger books besides the Ultimates? Hawkeye has kicked the crap out of cosmic characters, put down time travelers and been the last one standing to save the rest of The Avengers asses many, many times.
FirstLady
FirstLady - 7/25/2010, 6:37 PM
@Hawksblueyes yeah I bet!!!!! He's a fake ass Robin Hood. He was the last one standing cause after he finished hiding then he came out when the fight was over. I like the DC version better of the guy with the Bow and Arrow... HawkEye and his pink boots.

@Hawsblueyes anwer the Ladies question! Name one person in the Marvel Universe that HawkEye can beat! Do you know what would happen if The Hulk caught him aiming his bow and arrow at him? He couldn't shit for a week. P.S. Back in 1962 when that comic book was made I'm sure Hawk Eye had it going on before people carried handguns I beat you he was the shit!

Gab: I'm not about to make a list for someone who not only doesn't really care and has their mind made up, but only asked the question in order to be a smart ass and derogative.

As for guns making you a badass and untouchable, we are dealing in a complete fantasy world here my man and if a man called Captain america can charge you behind his shield while you empty your gun at him, and then kick your ass, why can't a man with a bow shoot you before you can pop a cap in his ass.

Just to humor you though: Kang, Ultron, The Collector and Kronos in a Marvel DC crossover but the list can go on forever.

Read some original Avengers comics, you may find you like them.
