Is Marvel Studios Planning To Retcon Scarlet Witch's Origin Story To Make Her A Mutant?

Marvel Studios isn't allowed to use the term "mutant" in the Marvel Cinematic Universe but that will change when the X-Men return home and it now appears as if the door is open to some key alterations...

In the comic books, Scarlet Witch is the daughter of Magneto and one of the world's most famous mutants. While Captain America recruiting her to join Earth's Mightiest Heroes allowed Marvel Studios to introduce the character in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Wanda has never been referred to as a "mutant" in the MCU because Fox owns both that term and the X-Men -  but the planned merger is obviously going to change things and it now seems like the door is wide open to her origin being retconned.

In a Visual Dictionary for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a description for Scarlet Witch drops some hints that Von Strucker may have just unlocked something that was already there with the Mind Stone.

"She may be called Scarlet Witch, but Wanda's powers aren't derived from the occult. Whether it altered her or merely unlocked something latent inside Wanda, the Infinity Stone on Loki's scepter bestowed incredible powers of the mind. Wanda's internal neuro-electric interface allows her to conjure blasts of red telekinetic energy. She can also use this energy to create barriers, levitate and move objects; to communicate and read thoughts by telepathy; and even to manipulate the minds of others."

That's definitely interesting and it would certainly shake things up to out Wanda as a mutant, especially if Marvel is planning an Avengers vs. X-Men movie (a smart move and guaranteed box office success).

Nothing is set in stone, of course, but the wording here is undeniably interesting and you have to believe Kevin Feige at least considered the possibility of making her a mutant when she was introduced...even if he couldn't say it. What do you guys think? Share your thoughts down below.

I doubt it.

But if they do, I think they should say that the mutant gene activated in her (and her brother) when they were being experimented on in Sokovia by Strucker.

This sounds like "Ehhhh...you be the judge" LOL.

It is a clever way to handle it though if you ask me. It's not fully explained in Age of Ultron the route of their powers, just that they exist.

@AyMan - I go with the idea that it guided what happened when her mutant gene unlocked. That said why does a mind stone grant super speed ?

I’m pretty sure the Stone just awakened her mutant x gene. I think that’s a way they could introduce the Mutants in the MCU also is after the events of A4 the power of the stones awakens that gene in a good percentage of the population and Mutants are on the rise or something like that

@Bakugo - but they explained in infinity war that shes able to destroy the mind stone because her powers came from it.

@Origame - I thought Vision said her powers could destroy it because they are of similar frequency, not that her powers derived from the stone.

@SuperManes - no they definitely say that its because of her power coming from the stone. Youre partially right since thats why her power is on the same frequency.

@Origame - well to be fair I've only watched it twice so I haven't memorized all the fine details

They made sure to leave the door open when they introduced the Twins, saying that they were the only ones to survive the process so there was clearly something special about them.

The big issue of merging Wanda with the X-men at this point is that the written description of her powers sure sound a lot like Jean Grey’s... Telekenisis, getting into people’s minds...

@Chewtoy - thats why they need to have her to train with Strange and start practicing magic to help harness her power. It would differentiate her from Jean.

@BlackBeltJones - And miss out on Agatha Harkness? Honestly, I want Harkness to be around to make disapproving, acerbic comments about the state of the new Sorcerer Supreme.

@Chewtoy -

talking about merging ....

when will it be effective ?

@Chewtoy - the thing is i don't think she is 'putting thoughts in their heads' instead i think she is merely unleashing the fears they already have. I would see that much different than Jean's powers.

We knew this already....that it may have unlocked something

Swear this was talked about during AOU Marketing. Doubt its mutation. I took it as MAD SCIENCE, plain and simple. She's an experimentation and she was gifted with power not too different from the mind stone.

But I wouldn't be mad if it was a mutatation though.

@BlackBeltJones - You know, I don't ever remember the movie explaining the powers. Only that it was hinted at the mind stone. However it has been awhile since Avengers 2 so...REFRESH THY MEMORY!
