Joss Whedon Talks Avengers with SFX

The new issue of SFX magazine has an interview with Joss Whedon in which he discusses The Avengers.

Here are a couple of excerpts:

"What I kind of think ultimately defines Marvel Studios was the first thing they did and that was cast Robert Downey Jr. They said, ‘What if we got great actors and let them have some time to be the people they’re supposed to be instead of going through the paces of hitting this mark and that mark?’ They don’t always get it right, but nobody does. But if you look at who they already had, and who they allowed me to add to the cast, they are thinking about the integrity of the characters. Obviously we have to get from point A to point B, and fans really want to see this – and ideas for set-pieces which I said are great. Now I’m going to make them matter and they are completely on board with the idea."

"What I will struggle with, in the outline and throughout, is that I would like to put these actors in a room and just make Glengarry Glen Ross. We’re talking about really exciting people and at the same time I have to keep the momentum of the thing going. I can’t let it turn into a lull fest. Knowing that I have enough time to do both of those things – that by the end of the movie you will feel ‘in’ with these guys – is the trick. It’s not an easy one but one that Marvel absolutely honours. They don’t hire Mark Ruffalo [the new Hulk] to say one iconic line and strike a pose. They hire him because he has so much humanity in him. He’s the antithesis of the iconic actor. He’s so human. He was my first choice to play the part, and the fact he is playing the part is nuts! They went to great lengths to make that happen and they understood exactly why he was right for the part."

Joss is just having a little fun with us. Glengarry Glen Ross heh.

The wait for the first tangible pieces from the Avengers production is going to be far too long. We need more spies... err I mean Reporters on this one. Buff up those lenses and get ready to spring for lunch to get people talking.

argh....I'm glad he cares about the characters personality and interactions, but if this movie is 80% talk and 20% action it will suck no mater how good the dialogue is.

I knew Whedon didn't want Norton. He knew Norton wasn't right for the role.

I like Whendon's enthusiasm, but I'm losing respect for him for sh*tting on Norton like that. Rufallo may or may not be better than Norton, but single him out in an interview? Classless.

@Anil

Well you and I do disagree often. He was not who I thought of first but I feel very confident knowing he is at the helm of the Avengers.

@MassExecutions

I have yet to hear the budget. That will tell you most of what you want to know. Joss is very good with action and I expect plenty of it.

Norton bashing? Are you guys reading the same article I am?

Norton is a high-power Actor and is very secure in that. Ruffalo is not. I see what Joss said as a little positive shout out to Ruffalo to show he has confidence in him. Since his performance will be compared to Nortons I think that is not a bad thing to do at all.

All a matter of how you read it.
